What an incredibly sweet and touching piece, I wish I had read it at Christmas! Ron and Hermione were both nicely in character, and I loved the way the story turned their usual bickering into flirtatiousness. All of the descriptive passages were lovely and very lyrical. Ron's speech to Hermione in the secret garden was such a nice rationalisation of why he wanted to tell her how he felt. I loved the whole thing.

Ha ha, poor Snape. That has got to be the worst day ever. I'd love to see him with orange streaks in his hair. And that Blaise - he sure is persistant! I really enjoyed this - when can I go to one of those 'special' parties?

Ooh, I'm really enjoying this, its great to see how all the characters have changed. I'd love to hear more about why Ron is so arrogant, and see Harry make amends to Hermione. It would be fun to see more of the new Draco, too. I'm really enjoying the way that you have written this, and looking forward to reading more soon! xadie xx

Enough For An Angel by Seren
Rated: 1st-2nd Years [Reviews - 27]

Summary: "Even when I was little, I was slow. I started walking months later than I was supposed to, and I spent the first three years of my life babbling nonsense that no one but I could understand. It was a well known fact - Gregory Goyle was stupid. " Goyle has always known he was stupid - until someone told him there was a different name for it. Written for the Special Needs, Special Love Project @ Project Aparecium. Not a shippy fic.

This was a really great story - not only did it educate me about how someone with dyslexia might feel about learning, it also gave me a new perspective on two characters. Goyle is a character I never really think about, except as muscle and background noise. This fic made me feel something for him; not just pity for his situation but happiness that he found a way to overcome adversity. By the end I was inwardly cheering for him. Luna was excellent - I loved the annoying smile comment - and as others have said, she's just the type to send someone to if you need not to have assumptions made about them. Luna never takes anything at face value, and in this story I loved her for it. When I read this challenge I thought it had the potential to incite a lot of boring or preachy fics, but you've certainly shown me that I was way wrong. Maybe I'll go look up some of the other challenge fics now!

Summary: In the evolution of a person, our personality grows, shifts, dies and is reborn again. Our views morph and grow, like a butterfly from its cocoon. But there's a price to pay for everything. Evolution is always painful. Contains Blaise/Hermione and Neville/Padma. Pre-HBP.

Seren, I love the way you write. You have your own style, and always come up with interesting storylines, and ideas that haven't been explored before. I loved the sparseness of this, the way characters' emotions weren't explained, because everything was clear from the language you used. When I read your work it makes me want to write.

I read this as part of the Rec homework on the beta forums, and decided not to write about it because there was almost too much to say. The fic is amazing and intense, one of the best I've read, and I almost couldn't face trying to capture what I loved about it in a review. Still, I've thought about it a lot since then, so here's my attempt at a recommendation. The study of Harry's character is excellent, with just the right tone of the books, mixed with a wearily adult tone that suits an older Harry. The slight childishness of wanting to say 'shut up' to the world - I know that so well, but I've never seen it written before, and it's a feeling I can easily imagine him having. The urge to abandon a destiny that's too big for one person to carry - we've seen him feel that way in canon, and this fic really takes that to the next level. The self-realisation to know that he wouldn't be able to go on living if he did abandon it is something he needs to learn between HBP and your story if he's going to survive. This really showed me aspects of Harry's character that I'd never considered before, or maybe never considered important. As others have said, your imagery is stunning. The hardness of muscles echoing the seeming hardness of his soul, the water waiting behind the shower head, the sky smirking at him. It was a joy to read a fic by an author who obviously takes such pleasure in language and in using it in new and interesting ways. I loved this fic, and wished that I could see more about Harry's life right at that moment, ie by destoying the perfection of this one-shot and turning it into a longer fic. I know that it's better the way it is.

Summary: Dumbledore- much to the dismay of several students- has decided to throw a Hallowe'en Masquerade Ball. The Trio, along with a few friends, are horrified at the prospect, and immediately resolve to do everything in their power to get out of going. Along the way, they make new friends, form strange alliances, and even find love. A tongue-in-cheek look at various fallacies within the fandom. Blaise/Hermione, Neville/Padma, Harry/Millicent, and a lot of UST between Ron and Draco. Some OOCness involved (what did you expect? It's a humour fic.)

This wos rubish cos you had lots of cliches and no R/Hr. R/Hr 4eva they rock! Or would that be rather missing the point? I really liked this - the idea of all the fangirls chasing them (I'm after Millicent Bulstrode myself - fine figure of a woman) and having to hide in the RoR and form an uneasy alliance. I really hope you come back to this because it seems to have a lot of comic potential.

Summary: I have seen them grow, change, and bond from a distance. They have never ceased to amaze me. What they have accomplished throughout the years is incredible, and I envy them. But with accomplishment also comes pain. How do they live when pain is preying on them? How do they go on when death is calling their names? They have suffered greatly, and that I do not envy…

This was a lovely set of character studies, both of the Trio and of Susan Bones, the narrator. Each of the Trio was described in a new way, and it was interesting to view them from the perspective of a true outsider. Harry in particular caught my attention, the metaphoric hardening was very nicely described. It was sad to imagine how all that growing up he had to do so fast would look to someone who was only an aquiantance. The description of the changes in Ron were nice too, how he grew in confidence over the years. We learned a lot about Susan, too, just from the way she viewed the Trio. She would make a great psychologist! I really liked this, and I hope you do well in the challenge.

Summary: They began their education as Housemates; and yet they hated each other. Encouraged by their pureblood families a shaky alliance was formed between the two. An unstable “romance” transcends. (SLASH) (Draco Malfoy/Blaise Zabini)

I liked so much of that - it was a shame, as you say, that the ending came off as rushed. I'm sure if I read the Ginny/Blaise piece all of that would fit into place, though. The description of the moment that Draco and Blaise realised that they loved each other was really nicely written, and made all the more poignant by the fact that the reader was already aware that the couple weren't together anymore. My only problem was with some of the language use, one example being "tackiest" - that isn't a word that most UK teenage boys would use. Overall though, I really enjoyed it - as someone else said you should write some more Draco/Blaise fics - we'd all thank you for it!

Author's Response: :laughs: I'm not too sure how UK boys talk, I'll try to think of a better word. The only British boy I'v eever heard speaking was an obnoxious prep who transferred to my school last year. Blaise/Ginny is getting some rewrites after HBP, but I may dabble again in Blaise/Draco. I like what they could have. Thanks for reviewing!

That was really original and different. I enjoyed it even though I found it hard to read because of the genuine sense of pain that flowed from the character. The ending was interesting, I didn't really know what to make of it.

Author's Response: Different...is that a compliment or not? *laughs* Was it hard to read because of the short phrases I wrote it in? Sorry about that. You're not supposed to understand the ending; even I don't know what happened. Thanks so much for the review.

Curse of the Reapers by deanine
Rated: 3rd-5th Years [Reviews - 308]

Summary: Past Featured StoryA different sort of alternate universe... It is a world under the thumb of an ancient emperor. Muggle society has been oppressed beyond recognition. Wizards rule over all, their only laws defined by power. This is the story of a rebellion, a family, a traitor, and the long road that leads home at last.

deanine, I just read the story so far and I have to say I'm incredibly impressed. This is the sort of story I could imagine reading (and loving) in a book of its own. If you just changed the characters a little and altered their names, you'd have the beginnings of a real epic of your own! That's not to say that I don't love the way you've woven the characters we love into their own story. Little details are fantastic - Hermione only learnt to read a year ago? That really tells you something about the sort of society they live in. What I would really like to see is a little more of a reason to rebel against the Empire. I'd like to understand the creed of the rebels and what makes them believe that the Empire should be brought down. Maybe you're planning that for later and I'm just getting ahead of myself! Really, I love this so far and I've added it to my favourites.

Author's Response: Hello xadie,

Many thanks for the kind comments, and I'm honored to be on your favorite's list :)

As to the ideals of the rebellion, that's something that gradually becomes clearer as you read along. Turpin's empire isn't a horribly difficult place to live in general if you're not a muggle. His rule is an absolute rule, with a good bit of arbitrary demands that you just have to hope don't come after you or your family, if you know what I mean. The next chapter really throws a couple of factoids around that help you see the negatives of living under Turpin.

There should be a solid muggle perspective before chapter 15 that will shed some light (haven't written anything beyond chapter 8 yet).

Peace!

I really enjoyed that - the way the clique built up slowly. The description of Snape as Head of House was excellent - how the Slytherin's felt close to him even if they didn't like him. I would love to see a cadre of Slytherins fighting Voldemort on their own terms in the final battle. Plus you made some really good points about clues that have been throughout the books - that Slytherin wasn't always synonimous with evil. I hope you win that award you're up for!

Author's Response: I didn't win it, but that's all right :-). Thanks for reviewing, and I hope that after HBP you still believe in this... (I Know I do.) -S.

Hey luna, that was such an interesting character study of my very favourite misanthrope. You've really captured a backstory for Snape that I would love to believe in. The tone was perfect for him, especially during the letter parts. I just don't want him to die in ignominy! I want Harry to know what he sacrificied for all of them! But if wishes were horses... Anyway, back to your fic. I loved it, and it made me sad. What more can you ask?

Author's Response: It IS very angsty, I know, and it's going to be very hard waiting until book 7 wondering what will become with our favorite Potions Master. I still have hope; however, to be completely honest, it's just easier to write the misunderstood Snape than the redeemed version. Thank you especially for your comment on tone. This was my first attempt at capturing Snape's "voice" and I dreaded accusations of OoC-ness. It was so sweet of you to review!
