I couldn't see Ernie as being so cold-hearted and thinking only of his N.E.W.T.s. I'm glad Hannah got him to participate in the search for Miranda. It was probably the psychological break he needed.

Author's Response: In the books, Ernie changed a lot, from the 15-year-old in Book 5 who bragged about how many hours he spent studying for his O.W.L.s, to the 17-year-old in Book 7 who shouted, "And what if we want to stay and fight?" This has always intrigued me. How did he grow from his self-focus on the immediate matter of good marks in school to the appreciation of the much wider issues of the well-being of the whole community? I envisioned him as very conflicted between these two types of goals during his final year, because I didn't see him as a person who could change focus easily. In previous years, Hannah had been the pigtailed little girl who needed support and assistance from him, and in this perilous year, he sees her as someone who has grown beyond him in strength and leadership, and belatedly he sees that he needs to follow her lead.

Thank you so much for writing a review. Do you suppose that Snape didn't believe their story for one minute, but pretended that he did so that he could get them safely to the hospital wing (as my beta reader suggested)?

Author's Response: Thank you so much, Ravenscore, for leaving such a nice review. I'm very glad that you enjoyed the story. The 1997-1998 school year is full of as yet untold stories; it could occupy our imaginative talents forever. Vicki/Oregonian
