Chapter: Playing It Straight, Part II

I need to tell you, I loved this story. :) You have just made me a Cho/Katie shipper for sure!

What I really loved about this story was how their relationship developed. A lot of the femmeslash out revolves around whining about the characters' one-sided relationship, but this story was nothing like that. It was a breath of fresh air, and just beautifully written. Bravo!

Author's Response: When I set out to write this story, I had it in mind that I was going to write about the development of a relationship rather than the hardships it endures, since that part is glossed over so often. I also thought, since the story I was planning on telling would be pretty straightforward, that I would tell it with a very non-standard couple yet try and keep it fitting into the canon as best I could. I wasn't very focused on Cho and Katie being together before writing this, either, but now I'm quite partial to the idea.

Hi, I'd just like to let you know how much I enjoyed this! I loved the natural way the relationship developed, the realness of the characters, and the way the dialogue and little details showed what was happening much better than plain old exposition. Very well written and well imagined, and I liked too that there wasn't this huge focus on "so are they both lesbians now, or what?" It was just a story about how two people fell in love. Thank you for the read!

Author's Response: Well, thankyou! That was exactly my goal with this story - write something that feels like a real relattionship developing naturally. It's not a very complicated story, but it did let me do a lot of things I like, like write long exchanges of dialogue or put a slightly slantwise twist on a well-explored subject. Same-sex pairing stories aren't exactly uncommon in fanfiction, but finding ones that don't really make a big deal of the characters being homosexual... There's maybe a couple of lines that bring it up, but on the whole it's a subtextual thing: I wanted to focus on Cho and Katie themselves. Playing the romance genre straight, as it were.

I would really liked to have seen their relationship flourish. See how they deal with others disapproving, etc.

Author's Response: But that's what the vast majority of other romances are about, gay and straight both - the external pressures that the couple overcomes to stay together. I wanted to focus on what comes before that.

Chapter: Playing It Straight, Part II

Loved the music notes at the end. Good songs and lovely versions.
I also really enjoyed the story. It was sweet and simple. I especially liked the kiss at the end that was just a kiss. Just a nice loving kiss. There should be more of those, without silly fanfares.

Author's Response: From what I understand, a lot of authors - both of fanfiction and of 'real' fiction - put together soundtracks for the stories they're writing; songs that sum up certain characters or events or emotions to keep them on track while they write. I've never gone that far, because if I spent too much time on a soundtrack I know it would distract me from what I was writing if I had it on, but I do listen to music when I write. Most of the time it's the Rolling Stones greatest hits, but for whatever reason I had to have something else playing for writing 'Playing It Straight', so take that however you will.

I think I may be alone (or at least in the minority) in preferring to see the building up of a relationship rather than the relationship itself. My end goal with this story was always that one kiss: where it goes from there should be left firmly up to the reader.

Once again, thanks for reading and reviewing.

Aw that's very sweet. It's nice how you show, not tell, what's happening. I've never really liked Cho, but I like her in this story. I especially love Katie. She is such a sweetie!

Author's Response: 'Show, don't tell' is like an iron law - I try to follow it as much as possible. I don't think many people consider Cho their favourite character, or even check her off as a character they like - she often gets a bit of a bad rap in fanfiction, if she appears at all - but in writing this I found the person behind the weeping caricature that Harry dates during OotP, and I quite like her. Katie, though, is (mostly) my own creation, and I was a little sad to have to finish writing this story, because that would mean having to shelf her; she's fun to write. Thanks for reading, and even more thanks for reviewing.

This is great! Usually I tend to stay away from slashfics, but you illustrated the relationship beautifully - you didn't do what a lot of other fanfic authors do, which is write homosexual relationships as if they're drastically different from the heterosexual ones that most of us are used to reading about - because in truth, love is love and there really isn't a difference. I also like your characterization of Katie Bell. Jolly good. ~Virgil

Author's Response: Thanks! This was actually one of my big goals for this story, to write about the growing relationship between two people and have it almost be incidental that it was a slash pairing. Writing Katie was a blast, too, because I had a lot of freedom to create someone who would play off Cho nicely. I'm glad you liked this story.

Wow... I'm very intrigued... this is getting adddictive. I forgot there was only one chapter posted so far!

Author's Response: Kinda long, isn't it? The other half is in the queue as I write, so there shouldn't be much of a wait for the rest.
