The return of Alex's doggerel verse! Oh boy! I admit, I've been a silent reader of yours for so long now, and it's not really fair is it!? It's thrilling that your chapters have been popping up with more and more swiftness - and I've been gulping them down with matching eagerness. I just adore Alex. And I adore your supporting characters more with each passing chapter. You've made her world real, tangible, and special. The cotillion and our introduction to the upper crust of Wizarding Society just cemented this for me. In fact, it's not unlike what I imagine their world to be like myself. I wish I had the same drive and creative energy to make such a complete world and story, and I applaud you for holding out on us until you've finished - what a difference it makes! I've started working on a little something something to accompany this chapter... can't wait for the next one!
I think Mrs. King is a very classy lady. She appears stern, may have old fashioned prejudices but she listens and attempts to acknowledge other points of view. She also cares for her children.
I noticed throughout the story how you portray anti-muggleborn prejudice. Way back when Alex was getting to know Max and his friends she noted that they never asked her about growing up in Larkin Mills. I think Max might have been more prejudiced against muggleborns but because he has experienced prejudice as a result of being Thorn's son, he has changed a little.
Why doesn't Alex just give her mother her cell phone number?
I like how the Ozark sisters have a small crush on Max.
Alexandra didn't know exactly what the Pritchards did on Sunday mornings, but she knew they always ate early,
I'm sure we'll find out eventually, but I suspect it has to do with religion.
We haven't had a cliffhanger like this for a while! Another great chapter - very redundant review from me at this point, but I can't say enough how impressed I am with your writing and these stories. You are very talented and very thorough, and even though I have no constructive criticism, I still want to let you know I'm reading and anticipating each and every chapter. Alex is gaining more depth and realism and I just love her. :) Can't wait to see what happens in the mysterious woods...
Interesting. Wonder if Mrs King and Max knew Abraham was at the Cotillion? He obviously wants to talk to Max in private.
Maybe Alex will get to see her new friend again when she visits Crotoa over the summer.
"That's Not My Name" was playing in my head as I read this chapter!
I love the little bit of intrigue that's been worked in here, and Alexandra's little she-doesn't-quite-know-it's-a-crush. The way you've worked in the meeting with her father was also very clever - the scepticism she had in the beginning really made that scene.
Author's Response: I'd never heard of the Ting Tings before, but I Googled "That's Not My Name" and watched the video on YouTube, and now it's stuck in my head! Aaaaah!
Poor Julia. I feel so sorry for her. But I feel like Alex is right, also--they will be able to find people who don't care that they're Thorn's children. just probably not at a cotillion...
Great chapter. Alex is getting more exposure to and familiar with the wizarding world, both good and bad. Ghost wars might be interesting to learn about. Glinda and the Wizard of Oz was great. Yes! Muggles certainly can put things over on those purebloods.
I'm trying to decide if I want to picture what Alex is going to do and say to people at the Cotillion, or not. It's definitely going to be interesting, funny and probably going to get her in trouble with a few people. Just hope it doesn't get anyone hurt. Or at least none of the good guys.
awww. I'm glad Alexandra's getting the chance to get to know her siblings better. She's going to be really sore tomorrow from all that riding- using muscles she hasn't used all that much before. Although, I suppose, having ridden a broomstick might help a little. I bet they do end up going to the Cotillion- either with or without Mrs. King's permission! Can't wait to read more!
It's great that Alex is learning about her family, and learning to like them. Living in the wizarding world when not in school is something she will hopefully need to know when she's an adult.
“Maximilian can be a bit... overbearing, can't he?” Maximilian flushed.
Julia giggled. “And gorgons can be a bit ugly!”
I'm goning to print it, put it in a canvass and hang it up in my room!! Honest!
We should have known that Alex would have an excuse not to give the coin back to Darla.
Alot of information is in this chapter but as usual it doesn't seem to be enough.
It seems to me though if the lower floors were as dangerous as you imply, then the school should make a better effort to protect the students. It is only natural curiousity that kids want to explore.
Awesome! I like all the description. Julia and Mrs. King seem really nice. I bet Alexandra's going to have a wonderful time. Did she forget to ask the elf porter, or did she feel it would be rude? (Although why that would stop her...) I can't wait to find out more about Croatoa! and to see the Granians! And what's this about a Cotillion?
New adventures. New family. Hopefully Alex will learn about her magical heritage, make new friends, and stay out of trouble for a week.
I LOVE THIS STORY!! Its really too bad that there would be copyright issues, cause you could so publish this. Its extremely fantastic. I love the characters!!
I forget the small things Alex doesn't yet know, like Portkeys; I love those small details. Can't wait to see her interact with her sister in the next chapter!
Congrats on the win, it was much much deserved!
i think it's great that alex still uses doggerel verse to cast spells. happy bday, alex!
Awww, her friends were so sweet to her for her birthday! I'm still of two minds of whether or not she should start talking with her father...he is probably not quite as horrible as everyone makes him out to be, but he is also probably manipulative and cunning and all those things she should be careful of. Though Alex is not usually the kind of person to fall for that. I do hope she is able to visit with Max, I adore their relationship. I really hope he is all he seems to be, though with how Journey turned out, I'm not taking anyone at face value for a long while, lol!
I feel like I should go back and read the Thorn Circle for possible clues to Darla's behavior. At random times during the day, I find myself thinking about it, like, "Where did I miss something?" But hopefully all questions will be answered soon, as we're nearing the last third of this part of Alex's story....can't wait for the next chapter!
Not a whole lot of action, but I still liked this chapter. Winged horses? Hey, I'd love that! I really hope she finds some way to get to go.
