Chapter: Left Me As You Came

It was very well written. I agree with those who find having an affair OOC for Lily, but we knew what the premise of the story was from the summary.

Chapter: Left Me As You Came

Harry was born 31 July 1980. He would have been conceived October 1979. Lily would have had the termination in Sept. but probably July (muggle version recommends three months.). You wrote the story to indicate a long standing affair. In fact she was spending entire days at his place and nights. James didn't notice the love of his life not at home. She might not have started this affair in the first month, but it had to be within the first year. So much for her promises. You touched a nerve with me on this story, because i've been in James position before. Ouch and double ouch!!

Author's Response: I'm sorry you were in James' position! :( Yes, it definitely would've been within the first year. Here was the vague time line I used (Good thing I kept my notes, huh?) and according to dates given in the HP Lexicon, there is no proof that they are inaccurate:

June 1978 - Lily/James/Snape Graduate Hogwarts
Summer of 1978 - Lily and James Marry
March-ish 1979 - Affair begins
October 1979 - "Possibly Harry" conceived
December (likely beginning) 1979 - Abortion
Spring 1980 - Prophecy given.

It's never stated that Harry wasn't premature (in fact, his small stature could be not solely due to his aunt and uncle, but could be catch up growth) and furthermore, the pregnancy and abortion could've taken place in late 1978 (I did leave the year out on purpose). Depending on which year this occurred in Harry was either a preemie or had a normal gestation with no affect to series at all. However, if I decided to make a chaptered fic based on this, it would become AU.

It's well written, but it seems really OOC for Lily, and also I got the impression from DH that Lily never knew that Snape loved her.

Lily doesn't seem the sort to sneak about having affairs and aborting children. If her marriage was that unhappy, she'd leave it. She seems like a very spirited and determind woman, and playing two men about like is not something she'd do.

This is really well-written, but it just seems extremely out-of-character for Lily in every respect. Your writing is great, but I just don't believe the underlying premise at all-- Lily comes off in the books as someone with a great deal of character and backbone, and sneaking around having a tempestuous affair and then having an abortion to cover it seem utterly OOC.

I thought this fic was really well written and dealt with the issues in quite a mature way. However, I like many people I'm sure, hate to think of Lily and James as the perfect couple so I find it difficult to appreciate the plot, though that is due to my own preferences, not to the way it is written. I like your style and I hope I get a chance to read more of what you have written,

To keep this story's timeline Canon compliant. Lily would have started this affair within her first month of marraige. What a sleaze!

Author's Response: As far as I know, Lily and James could've gotten married any time between the summer of 1978 and the fall of 1979. That's a window of over a year. Harry was born in 1980, so assuming he was in the womb for 9 months, he would've been conceived around October 31, 1979. The prophecy could've been given any time through about November 1979 to probably around April 1980 (most likely in March or April 1980); plenty of time for Lily to conceive again (assuming this baby wasn't Harry) and to have not started her affair in the first month of marriage, I think. As a stand alone, it is canon compliant and I worked hard to ensure it was so.

Let me get this straight-Lily gets an abortion? That's pretty intense.
