Chapter: Prologue

This just keeps getting more interesting!
I have no idea if you know about this and it would be extremely hard to bring it into a story...but will you bring in shomer negiah? My friends and I are both curious about that. I'm also nervous for the poor girl...when she finds out what's going on in vienna, she'll be devastated! I really can't wait to read the next chapter!

Author's Response: I agree it would be pretty hard to bring shomer negiah into this story, especially because Tzipporah breaks it by shaking hands with Dumbledore in chapter three (although I know it's disputed whether that actually counts). Still, with my plans for a romance (even a G-rated one), it would be hard to work this in. As for what's going to happen in Vienna, let me just say that Tzipporah's reactions are most definitely devastated, and even more so because of the friends she makes at Hogwarts who are all dealing with the results of WWII and/or Grindelwald's attacks.

pretty interesting doing a story about a Jewish witch in the depression and WWII period. I was thinking of a story set in WWII myself, but as an alternative universe story about the Trio and the Weasleys trying to survive in WWII, hiding in Grimmauld Place. It would be a double-edged risk-the Weasleys being a JEWISH blood-traitor family (with Hermione the daughter of Jewish muggles and Harry being half-Jewish, though Lily converted to marry James). They would be wanted on both sides-Voldemort for their dissent and Hitler for being Jewish. It's only in a small nutshell, but I may not write it, since I don't really have time.

I admit I got the idea of a WWII-themed Harry Potter story from another story (which was about Bill fighting in the French resistance) but, sadly, I cannot remember the title.

Chapter: Chapter One: The Letter

What a great premise. Now that your second chapter is up, I am starting to recognize some of the lines you are drawing up. Seeing that they speak Yiddish, they are probably of Eastern European origin (German Jekkes wouldn't speak anything but German). The rabbi wearing a tallit on Friday night might also confirm that: chassidic rabbis do that, others not. Would you picture their family coming from the Eastern part of the by then defunct Austro-Hungarian empire, probably fleeing antisemitism and poverty, only to rediscover it the Nazi prewar Austria? How sad!

You do make Eliezer come thrice daily for services, which would make him quite Orthodox, but yet she goes to get the mail across the street *after* services. They seem somewhat inconsistent in their observance, though Vienese Orthodox (like other Jewish contemporaries of theirs) might easily allow themselves to ask such a thing of a child not yet bat mitzva.

I absolutely love your little details, such as the Kishefmakher Academy! That sounds like Jewish wizards had to set up their own school, perhaps because Nazi wizards booted them out of the regular local school?

I wonder, does their rabbi know that she is a makhsheife? Will you try to address the religious debate about witchcraft?

Can't wait for the next installment.

Author's Response: I'm glad you like my story, but I'm afraid everyone's expecting more of me than I can really offer. I'm a reform Jew myself, so please be patient with my mistakes - I'm doing some research to try and keep the story consistent with orthodox Judaism. But there will be times I slip up, so I'm sorry in advance for that. As for the Yiddish words and "little details", they're my favorite things to add, and its nice to know other people appreciate them. I hope you keep reading!

This looks like an fascinating story. It will be interesting to see your OC interact with Tom Riddle, Minerva McGonnagal and of course Prof. Dumbledore! One question, I thought witches and wizards in the HP books didn't believe in any God. Overall a great story. I do think it would be cool if you could put someone of Gypsy ancestry in your story; they were another minority affected by the madness of Hitler. Overall you have a great start to what is sure to be a fantastic story. Please keep writing!

Author's Response: I did a little research on Lexicon to see exactly how to fit Riddle, McGonagall, and Dumbledore into my story. Dumbledore will definitely be there, just wait until chapter 3. As for McGonagall, her birth year, 1925, would place her in second year when Tzipporah gets to Hogwarts. There will be one brief interaction between them, mentioned in passing in chapter 6. Riddle is supposed to have started Hogwarts in 1938, which would make him a year behind Tzipporah, so he won't enter into this story because it only covers her first year.

This looks to be an interesting story. It will be amusing to see how you handle the strict halachot involving Shabbos and Magic. I wonder, is levitating something really considered work?

I would suggest delving into some of the midrashim involving magic. It will give a clear picture of how the Torah portrays magic.

Hatzlacha Rabah, I can't wait to see where this is going.

Author's Response: Thanks for the tip! I'm picking up a midrash translation from the library to get a good idea of magic in the Torah, and I'll see what I can work in. In all honesty, I don't know how orthodox I'm going to make Tzipporah because I'm a reform Jew myself and I don't know too much about the strict laws. But I do want to keep her customs accurate to the time period and place she lives, so I'll have to do some research. Thanks again for the suggestions and support.

Very interesting premise. Tzipporah powers will most ikelymake her an outsider to her co religionists and her religion and customs will most likely make her an outsider at Hogwarts. an't wait to see where you are going with this.
