I don't recall if I ever left a note when I read this in spewswap, but even if that's the case, it's still my pleasure to review such a wonderful one-shot as this.
You're such a terrific writer, one of the best I've ever encountered in fanfiction. The opening image was vividly clear in my mind, of a bewildered Weasley twin sitting on a mountain top, and then came the perfect comedic timing of that “Huh.” You seem to have an amazing instinct for flow, timing, characterization, everything that makes a piece of writing solid.
The portrayal of Fred and George was excellent. So many writers overcompensate by making everything they say a joke, but your characterizations are so natural, mingling the jokes with the fierce love that they feel for each other. You write their voices perfectly too. I loved the lines “why’d you have to choose now to start following rules?” and“I burned an ox to get you here. An entire ox, fur and all. Do you have any idea how bad that smelled?” The moment when George said “you already did” was heart-breaking.
The retelling of the Pollux and Castor myth is really clever, but what I makes it really special to me is what it says indirectly about grief; that there's incredible sadness but also a place for humor, and that you can best show your love for and honor the memory of someone that you lost by living and moving forward. The ending image of their two “mirror images” is a really strong and moving one, sad but also life-affirming.
The only complaint I could think of for this fic is the fact that it feels so very short, and yet still complete. Perhaps there's something that could be added, but if you, as the writer, feel that it's complete, then it probably is.
Brilliantly touching. If only Fred had chosen to come back.
This is really really nice! I love how you made it both funny and sad. Really great! I wish he'd have went with him though...I hate it that Fred died =(
What an interesting idea!!! So sad, and a little off beat and a little funny at times (an entire ox!)--overall excellent. Very sad.
Mm =) very good.
Brilliantly written story.
I loved how Fred, as much as he desired to return to his loved ones and all he had left behind, was not willing to allow George to sacrifice his life.
I could empathize with George and how, out of desperation, he was willing to give up a portion of his life to be reunited with Fred.
Loved the line, "Give 'em hell from me."
Great story, it's really sad when you come to think about what a twin could do for the other, being a twin myself I could sympathise with George's... but I understan Fred's reaction too! ;oP
*sniff* that's so depressing... in a good way though! good story!
yes, I get the first review! Your story was brilliant but it was too sad for words. I wish Fred had listened!
