Chapter: A Brief Acquaintance

Oh, nice story. I always liked Lupin (until DH-don't understand why Rowling had him act that way), and I love Severus. This was a really good analysis of the relationship between these two very different men.

One of my favorite parts is that, when Lupin and Severus were talking, Lupin never really intentionally insulted Severus, but Severus took everything as an insult, none the less. I think that says a lot about his character - he's miserable because people do pick on him a lot, but he also makes his problems worse by taking offense so easily. Great story! I really, really enjoyed it! :D

Chapter: A Brief Acquaintance

Hey, wow! I never connected the Worst Memory with Snape's behavior in year 3 before, and I think you are absolutely spot-on. I love when fanfiction is a means of sharing new theories and connections of clues from the books. Anyhow, I was impressed at how well-written this was, and Lupin's characterization is done fantastically. I feel like you could have continued this farther- why did Snape tell on Lupin at year's end? Tying it in with Sirius's return, I suppose it makes sense, but it's sad that the newly-confident snape you write would soon fall apart when his old tormentor returns as a "good guy", sort of. Great job, though, really.

Author's Response: I write a lot about Snape, and I think that he didn't just turn out the way he did for nothing. I think that in a lot of ways he got pushed into the Dark Lord's arms, and if good people like Remus had only stood up to bullies, maybe Snape wouldn't have fallen. Thanks for the great review!

Chapter: A Brief Acquaintance

Oh my gosh, this is one of the best stories I have ever read! Seriously. I really, really like the idea of Remus and Severus having a kind of friendship for a while; it seems plausible, and it kind of gives Severus more reason for disliking Remus when they return as teachers, because if they were friends Remusí failure to stop James and Sirius on that day is more of a personal betrayal. Especially since Remus never said anything to him after that (why was that? because of guilt?), so it must have seemed like he was just using Severus to do better on the OWLs. And so Snape's worst memory seems to be one of Remus' worst, or at least most shameful, memories too - very interesting.

I think you did a really great job with the characterization, though itís not necessarily the way I think about all the characters Ė I tend to think of Remus as being more studious than James, and of Sirius and James as being on more or less the same level academically (though I really liked the little part about Jamesís grades being to impress Lily, and his humor for the guys). It also surprised me a little how willing Severus was to enter into friendship with Remus, but then, he didnít seem to have a lot of friends, so perhaps that explains it. And I always thought Severus made the Wolfsbane because Dumbledore asked him to, but now that I think of it, we donít know that for sure, do we? Actually, one of my favorite things about fanfiction is that it lets us see familiar characters or situations in a new way, and the stories that do this well tend to be the best; and this one is definitely one of those.

I especially like your characterization of Severus; you made him rather an inspiring person at the end there, and I really like that (though it makes me wonder what you think of HBP). I was also wondering how the trick Sirius played on Severus, by which he found out that Remus was a werewolf, came into this Ė because wouldnít Remus know that Severus knew about his condition? Well anyway, quibbles aside, I really enjoyed this; thank you so much for writing such a touching and thought-provoking story!

Author's Response: Thanks so much for the detailed review! I wrote the story mostly because I was really disappointed in Remus in that scene, though I generally like him as a character. I think that bullies get away with things because no one is willing to stand up to them, and then the situation just gets worse. And even good guys like Remus can have their moments of weakness, without realising the consequences of their choices.

Very well done. I can totally see this happening. One often looks back and wonders - "Was there something I could have done differently to prevent this?" Keep up the good work.

really good story... i love lupin, one of my favorite characters... the only critisism that i have is that i can't imagine snape ever saying "whatever" other than it was a great story!

Author's Response: Thanks so much! I guess the "whatever" is just Snape being a kid--every now and then it's fun to throw him some OOC dialogue, just to make him a little human. Thanks for the review!

Wow, what can I say... Severus as misunderstood as I always believed he was. Perhaps a little nicer to Lupin than I expected, and I'm not sure you left room for the Werewolf prank, when I believe Severus' real hate for the marauders took hold, but a wonderful, entertaining and at some points heartbeaking tale to read. Well done!

Author's Response: Thanks so much! I guess I think of Remus as the most compassionate of the Marauders, and it sort of intrigued me that he and Snape might have had a brief friendship, especially as Snape still makes him Wolfsbane as an adult. Glad you liked the story!
