Chapter: The Letter

I don't know that you read all the comments left here but I felt that I simply had to stop and say a few words to you.

I read this story at least a year ago, although it seems like far more, it was early on in my introduction to fanfiction and I was quite greedily reading just about every other story I came across. Since reading this story I have read hundreds, if not a thousand works of fanfiction and as I am sure you can imagine I have returned to reread very few.

But somehow in that enormous sea of stories, this work stayed with me, although I read it very, very long ago. And so I have looked for it dozens of times on various websites because I was unable to recall exactly where I'd read it or what it's title was. You can't imagine how very please I was to find it again while very determinedly going through all of the Marauder Era fics on in this website.

Because somehow, this story touched me. Really truly touch me.

I have always had the deepest admiration for characters who sacrifice what they want out of love or admiration for someone else. It is not written very often, and rarely is written well, but this story managed to do that.

This story is beautiful, and heartbreaking, and touching and cold. It is a gift to everyone who happens to read it and I am very proud to be one of those people. Thank you.

Author's Response: Oh, WOW. What a lovely review! Thank you so much for stopping by to comment, and I'm glad you managed to find the fic again.

Chapter: The Letter

This is a very promising beginning, well written and in character for Snape. I hope it lives up to its promise, showing us a complex but not prettified or glorified Severus Snape.

"His mother was most likely what her classmates had needed to practice defence against."

Heh. I like that line. Severus already has that dry, acerbic wit.

Amazing fanfic! I came into this story with many reservations. I don't usually read Snape stories (even though he is one of my favorite characters, the fanfics that I read never really got him right) and then your warnings had me quite worried about what I was getting myself into. But it was recommended to me, so I started right in and ended up completely amazed!
Your characterization of Snape was perfect! I simply cannot picture him any other way now. Your chapters flowed together so well and the story tied in seamlessly with canon.
There was such a great balance of darkness and light, as well. I felt so bad for Snape at times (although I'm sure he wouldn't appreciate the sentiment), but I just loved his wicked sense of humor. The scenes with him and Lily were so touching. If he was going to only have one friend, at least it was Lily. Your characterization of Lily was also quite good. I loved her cheekiness! She was just lovely.
Your fanfic is now in my top five and I'm looking forward to reading your other pieces.

A very intersting first chapter, I particularly enjoyed the visit to Olivander's. And Severus' mum sounds very slytherin, look out for yourself because anyone who protects you will think less of you for needing it.

Now that I'm all done (a day's project, which successfully drew me away from my huge Culminating Project due tomorrow) I get the title. Very clever, that.

Oh my's over. That is without a doubt the best fanfiction I have ever read. Are you sure you aren't an author in real life, too?
I really liked how you characterised Severus. You made him, through it all, a good--but misunderstood--person. I just looked at the date and found that you wrote this pre-DH--so kudos for figuring out the Lily/Severus relationship. This was very sad and well written and not something I am liable to forget any time soon. Severus in my mind is the tragic hero of HP--a true hero, but his story always ends sadly, and that is that. :( Really, really, really well done. Writing, plot, everything--impeccable. My heart bleeds for poor Severus Snape.

Haha--very funny at the end with Lily and Severus trying to fool Slughorn. :) I wonder what will happen the next time the Marauders stumble across Severus? Only one way to find out...on to chapter 24! Sad to say, I'm over halfway done...I never want it to end. :(

Yay!! Another excellent chapter. I like that Severus and Lily made up. "The Prince's Tale" in DH was far too sad.

One of the best parts about this story is how well you portray Severus' character. He has his flaws but you show him to be ultimately a good person, which is how I like to believe him to be. :)

Chapter: A Lesson in Memories Occlumency/Legillimency perhaps a part of the title? *shrugs* Excellent! One question: I'm not a very subtle person, and was wondering: is Sirius with Peter, or am I just imagining that? *shrugs again* On to chapter 19! And I never want it to end....

Chapter: The Black Feather

Oh!!!!! This is so sad with Ink!!!! This is rather strange to read, as I just finished reading A Matter of Malevolence by trinsan, another Snape POV. In AMoM Malfoy tries to be Severus' friend. It's odd now reading this where it's the opposite case. Very well done as usual, though!

Just curious...was this written pre-DH?
Random things: Crows are my favourite animals, and Ink...what a great name! Maybe Snape and James will get along better....? *crosses fingers*
