Chapter: An Epistle to Dumbledore

I haven't read much fan fiction, as I only recently became interested in it. My interest came directly from wanting to figure out the question of Snape and Dumbledore (and I'm convinced that Snape is still good), and then deciding to write a story about it. Writing a story made me want to find others - thus, I wrote before I read. Naturally, I've been looking for Snape, and I'm ecstatic that I found yours! Wow. You've really done a wonderful job, and please don't listen to the person who said your vocabulary was too adult - it was perfect. In fact, that was probably my favorite part. Of course he'd use the word "epistle"! It is also heartening to see someone else delve into Snape's motivations, his life, and so on in a more understanding manner than Harry. This portrayal was heartrending and beautiful. Thank you.

Author's Response: Vorona, I really appreciate your review, and I'm sorry it's taken me so long to respond. I feel completely the same about Snape as you seem to! Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts!

Very, very good! No, Fantastic! I no longer feel the gound beneath my feet! So good I'm now having second (third, fouth, fifth) thoughts about submitting my own Snape fanfic (an epitragic love story that I now feel I could never pull of with the elegance you display here). However, I am relieved to know I'm not the only thirtysomething spending way too much time in the Potterverse!

Author's Response: Wow. I'm feeling pretty weightless myself after reading your kind review! Thank you so much!

But DO post your own story; we Snape followers need all the voices we can get!

really, really good. it was so realistic and i agree that snape is a really interesting character... there should be more stories like this one (though i don't really think that this brilliance is achieved easily!)

Author's Response: Aww...that's sweet of you. I do love writing Snape, though, so I think I'll just have to thank JKR for inspiring me with such a great character. Thanks for the review!

Wonderful story!! 10 +++++ Shame that it's a one-off though, because I can't help wondering what *actually* happened next! I'm a hopeless dreamer, so I'm betting that Snape received redemption by others, not just by himself!! Hugz

Author's Response: LOL! I actually wrote an expanded ending for this and posted it on my LJ; however, I did it for a fellow Hermione/Severus shipper, so some might find that pretty scary in and of itself! :-D Thank you for the generous review!

Excellent exposition! Encore! However, I rather hope that Snape really fell off the edge -- back towards HWMNBN. Or he was pushed off by an unbreakable vow. Also, big logic hole in the PotterVerse... Why can't all these innocent people just yank a memory out of the noggin and into some Tupperware? The court would dive in and see all. JKR has shown that tampering can be detected and she has stated that pensieve pastimes are not limited to a memory-originator's point of view. Oh well, thanks for that great chapter. -- Potter junkie

Author's Response: Good point about the use of memories as evidence. I've actually seen several fan fics that absolve Snape using DD's saved memories. I can't wait to see what Rowling does! Thank you for the kind review!

Wow! That was brilliant! I really loved it, you seemed to capture his personality quite well! -claps- I would give you higher than ten, but alas, they do not. So, I shall settle with ten out of ten, but I know that if I could, your rating would be MUCH, MUCH, MUCH higher! I'm going to see what other things you have written. ~Lilac

Author's Response: That's very kind of you, Lilac. I'm very happy you liked it, especially since I enjoyed writing it so much. Thanks for reading!

Great story! I know it's just a one-off (alas), but I wish there was more. Oh well. think you captured Snape perfectly, as if he was really writing that. Although he can't, of course, since he's a fictional character. But anyway. I loved the line: 'Hopefully, I did make some small difference without scarring them all for life.' So witty. It made me smile for the only time reading it. :) I'd give you 11/10, but unfortunately, the rating thingy doesn't go higher than 10, so you'll have to make do with 10.

Author's Response: You're sweet, Quigley. *sigh* I think I can live with a 10. *grins*

Anyway, I do like writing Snape, so hopefully soon I'll have some more Snape-centric fics that you'll like as well as this one (though my Narcissa/Snape story is pretty sappy). Thanks for reviewing!

I love the fact that you look at the story from Snape his point of view, when I read the Harry Potter books I am always wondering what the other characters are up to. I think that Snape is still on the good site but he is gonne have a really hard time with his only source of trust dead... thanks to himself... you really showed that he realised that he would die after Dumbledore died and he kind of died that very same moment as well. great story!! loved it:D

Author's Response: Thank you for reviewing, BigBoss! Yes, I certainly do wonder how Snape can possibly prove his innocence at this point. I guess the best hope for us Snape fans is for another unbreakable to be involved (which would necessitate a witness like Bella at Spinner's End). Here's to hoping, though! Cheers!

Oh.My.Gosh. That was AMAZING! You captured Sanpe perfectly!!!! And I agree. I think Dumbledore TOLD Snape to do it. Just to throw people off, or something. But it was totally wonderful. I wish I could write like you. But sadly, I can't. Oh well... I shall be off now. 11/10

Author's Response: And your response makes me feel really amazing! Thank you.

After, oh, six months of thinking about this book and engaging in all the on-line discussions, I'm now utterly convinced that Snape is still Dumbledore's man.

Amazing! I loved every bit of it. it sounded exactly like Snape. And it showed all the worries he would have after killing Dumbledore and ebign sentenced to death. I like that he wrote a letter to Dumbldore, though he's dead, hoping that someone will find it and read it. Briliant! ~Sara

Author's Response: Thanks, Sarah! I'm hoping beyond hope that Snape will be redeemed, but since that doesn't look too hopeful right now ... well, I had to give him a chance to speak. I'm so glad you think I captured his voice! ~I trust Snape!

EXTREMELY well written and so enjoyable. I loved it, there were certain parts where I felt like getting up and acting it out just so I could feel it more. Great stuff, and a very cool idea for a one shot. Thank God this was in the Featured Section, as I never would have found it otherwise. 10/10.

Author's Response: Well, I'm very happy that you did find it, Zetera! I certainly appreciate your kind words, esp. the part about you wanting to act the story out; it really was a very visual story for me while I was writing it, so hopefully your response is an indication that I conveyed that feeling to the reader, too. Thanks!

Chapter: An Epistle to Dumbledore

Hello there. Let me just say, first of all, that this was wonderful. I am officially in love with Severus Snape…not that I didn’t like him before but you made him even more fanciable. *cough* NOW! On with the review!!!

One thing he did miss was his books. Having always been a studious man, he really didn’t know what to do with these hours of waiting. He had no urge to sleep or to compose any last words of contrition (as they'd probably hoped he would when they'd left the writing materials), but the time weighed heavily upon him. OOO, I love this paragraph. It’s so Snape. And I feel sorry for him, because I can imagine him being very attached to his books. Kind of like Hermione, but a little less annoying.

Now, I know this is the main point of the fic, but I think the letter is marvellous. You captured the voice and vocabulary of everyone’s favourite potion’s master perfectly; it was almost as if J.K Rowling had written it herself. Or perhaps that Snape had come to life from the pages of her books, invaded your mind, and took over for this section of the story. It seems perfect, even though technically there is no such thing as perfection. Anyway, I like it. I should not have rambled for so long…

But I continue rambling all the same. You did not brand me as a sign of ownership, but you ruled my life just the same. That sentence is my favourite. It just about describes Dumbledore’s relationship with Snape perfectly, and makes me want to squee for angstyness. (Did that make sense? Possibly not)

Hopefully, I did make some small difference without scarring them all for life. Is another line I adore. I think it’s so dry and witty that it just suits Snape perfectly, without being contrived. Kudos to you: I cannot write from Snape’s point of view.

No complaints. NONE. I never do this. Well, I do sometimes but not often. And, also, I love Snape dearly now. Even more dearly than I did before. 10/10 for you. ^^

Author's Response: Another convert to the cause (though it looks like you were already on Snape's side)! Yay! All us Snape fans sure have had a lot to mull over after book 6, haven't we?

"...I feel sorry for him, because I can imagine him being very attached to his books. Kind of like Hermione, but a little less annoying."

Yes, I was thinking how desolate I'd feel without my books for even a little while, so I can only imagine what it would be like for him!

"You captured the voice and vocabulary of everyone’s favourite potion’s master perfectly; it was almost as if J.K Rowling had written it herself. Or perhaps that Snape had come to life from the pages of her books, invaded your mind, and took over for this section of the story."

I'm glad you think I've succeeded with Snape's "voice"; he's a fun character to write because he does seem to have such a distinct voice of his own. Maybe that's why he's such a popular subject in fandom. (Thank you, JKR, for that!) And I'd definitely hate to see him pop out of the books and come after me if I got it wrong! *shudders at the idea of Snape possession* LOL! But seriously, I also appreciate your understanding what I was trying to say about his relationship with DD. I don't want to offend any DD fans, but his influence over Snape can't be entirely pleasant even if/when Snape is on the good side.

Thanks so much for reviewing!

Still relatively new to the world of FF, my explorations so far have left me...let's say, "still hungry." This is the best bit of writing I've seen yet on the site. I thought there were real glimmers of the Snape I've been holding close in my thoughts since HBP, and that's enormously satisfying. The letter worked well; better than I would have predicted. So, how will they execute Snape, anyway? :) I'll definitely check to see if you've got longer pieces here!

Author's Response: Thank you so much for your response! I'm sorry I can't answer the question about the manner of Snape's death, but that's definitely a problem, isn't it? Perhaps he goes the way of Socrates....

Sadly, I haven't got any longer pieces, but I do have a break coming up so hopefully I can get back to the follow-ups I'v been working on for a couple of my other stories.
