this strikes me as exactly the type of thing Snape would face and overcome, the letter however, i am not sure about...

Wow - a very succinct and in-character monologue/descriptive text about SS.
Makes me wonder...
It does seem a shame that people tend to end up in two camps - SS is either a faultless victim of his situation or an evil, twisted murderer. It seems that you have avoided both of these very well, accepting that he is both at fault and at the same time innocent of his crimes.
If you do happen to write any more SS, I for one would be very willing to read it.

This is probably one of the most interesting fanfics i have ever read. The insight into snapes thoughts seem so realistic, this could very easily be an ending chapter in DH, the depth and emotion you have created here is stunning. I actually found myself feeling sorry for snape; after all, whatever path he chose would end in an untimly demise. I hope you keep writing more like this x

Author's Response: Wow, I really appreciate your kind words! Although I generally write fluff, this is still one of my favorites of my own stories--it's nice to hear that others feel that it's good, too. I hope that Snape survives the last book, but like you I don't see how he can.

Author's Response: Thank you so much for both the review and for rereading! I esp. appreciate your comment on characterization; Snape's such an intriguing character, isn't he?

I am always very wary to read Snape, and even more wary to write him because he is such a complex and very intense character. One of the most if not the most complex in the Harry Potter series because we don’t know a lot about him. From the very beginning he sounds very in character. (“Snape could only congratulate himself for being thought so reprehensible, so universally loathed that the Ministry had reinstated a punishment…”). This brings the reader into familiar ground preparing them for a culture shock with the Snape character. You really test his limits in this story and I like that a lot. It takes major guts with a character who is already hard to understand, and put him in a situation where the tiniest bit of error could lead to an out of character situation. You set him up to be the same character we know and love in the course of only a few words show us a side of Snape we don’t see, because it’s a part of him that he hardly knows about himself.

This exercise is ridiculous enough without dramatics.
It is little phrases like this that show us how very real his character still is. I can see him sitting there muttering to himself about how silly he is being. Yet it is something he needs to do, even though he doesn’t understand why.

The letter itself is uniquely perfect. It’s confusing, at times vague, and overall it is very hard to tell what he is meaning to write. This may sound like a criticism but really it’s a compliment, because the point of the letter isn’t to be concise and to write an actual letter. After all that would be completely pointless because as Snape very well knows, Dumbledore is dead. The letter is supposed to convey a message of a very different kind, it’s almost like an unscrambling of Snape’s soul in a way. Though he couldn’t put down everything in the letter it is still releasing him from the bonds of confusion. It makes sense to me that this letter wouldn’t make any sense, and the ironic part is that he is very concise in his writing of it, the vocabulary and grammar is just impeccable. It is just like Snape’s character, ironic. I absolutely love how he doesn’t know what to feel towards Dumbledore, whether to be angry or upset or thankful…it’s left very open to interpretation to him and to the readers of the letter.

I had one small cringe during the letter though.

Again and again, you sent me into the midst of mine enemies
I really liked Snape’s language in the letter all except for the word “mine” in this sentence. To me this feels a little over the top on formal writing. I know this is picky but it really stuck out to me.

Overall, this is a wonderful look into the mind and character of Severus Snape. It seems to me that you have a very good grasp of his character and are sure to have a lot of fangirls hot on this story. Keep up the good work :) I enjoyed reading this story very much!

Author's Response: Thanks so much for the review! You really seem to have really thought about the story, and I love how you articulate both the parts you like and the one you don't. You've given me lots to think about. Thanks again!

I read this fairly slowly, absorbing each word. It was amazing! You truely captured Snapes personality, but still left me wanting more. Can't wait for a second part ;P

Author's Response: Lol, I don't think I can do a follow up on this--I think I've left things pretty hopeless for Snape. Thanks for the review, though!

beautiful! Snape is the kind of man who would write rather than speak to people, I can totally see him write a letter to Dumbledore after his death. Really moving, thank you.

Author's Response: I agree: Snape doesn't seem like the type to pour out his feelings in person (or even to pour out his feelings much at all). Thanks so much for reviewing!

I'm not going to analyze everything in minute detail, because I think you're covered for that, lol. I just wanted to make sure you knew that I was awed by this story. Your vocabulary was perfectly Snape. PERFECTLY. It made me feel intelligent to read it, lol. It 's a wonderful idea you have here, too, though I'm on the hedge about Snape. I can't seem to come to any conclusions abouot him. Purely because this is such an impressive display of superior fanfic, i have put it on my Favorites. 10/10!

Author's Response: Thank you so much! I'm firmly in the Snape-is-good category, but there's definitely evidence enough both ways. I can't wait for book 7 to see if it tells us anything more about what motivates him. Thanks again!

That was a really great fic. Very well written, and incredibly well done. I could actually feel the emotion coming out of the words as I read them. Really excellent stuff!

Author's Response: Thank you! I'm so glad it touched you in this way!

That was tres kl!! I never really imagined Snape admitting stuff though... never mind. you wrote it really well! its gr8. good luck on other. You'd better write some more or else....

Author's Response: Yeah, it is hard to imagine Snape pouring his heart out, but it was a fun way to answer the "Letters to Heaven" challenge! Thanks for reviewing!

Wow, your story was amazing. I really like Snape as a character and I think that you really captured him in this story. I especially liked the overall mood to the story. I've seen quite a few stories that relate to Snape's feelings after Dumbledore's death, but few capture the situation quite as well as your story does. There is such a sense of hopelessness that permeates the story, as your title states. It's neat because it's something that he just has to say, even though he knows that there is no point to it. Beautiful. I really don't think more needs to be said because few words can describe this story. Thank you for writing such an excellent story.

Author's Response: And thank you for writing such a generous review! Snape really intrigues me as a character, so I'm glad you feel I captured him so well.

Gah! I can't believe I haven't actually left a review for this. It was a worthy winner of its category.

Fantastic atmopshere right from the start, a sense of complete hopelessness permeates everything. I think you have captured this little moment in Snape's life so well, and with such conviction, that it left me feeling so utterly sad for him. But to set atmopshere to one side for a moment, what this one-shot is really about is a relationship, and a one-sided relationship at that. You give us a man balancing himself before death, coming to terms with his life, and accepting his deficits. He's not afraid to be honest with himself, not afraid to share his thoughts with Albus, but only when he knows that the other man can't read them. I wonder if he would have dared say that to him had they been face-to-face in the cell? I could pull quotes from the story, but really, you pitched Snape so perfectly that it was all good. Most of all, it makes me sad for the man Snape could have been, and for the way the man he was was misunderstood by so many. And we can see his courage in admitting that by killing Dumbledore, he was commiting an act that he knew would result in the loss of his own life. Such a stark message.

I have this now saved on my hard drive, just so I can remind myself during the writing of SS what resolute man this character is. this is a litle piece of fanfiction perfection. Thank you.

Author's Response: Coming from the Queen of Snape fanfiction, your words mean a lot to me! Thank you so much!

Wow. That was really good. Not just as a fanfic, but as i short storie. Have you ever thought of actually writting. I think you'd be really good at it.

Author's Response: Thank you! I am trying to write some original fiction, but it's so much more fun to play in Rowling's world, lol!
