In the Parent Prompt, it says that it can't be a flashback or anything. My story follows the character from the day she starts Hogwarts till she's 19, so I have different sections like, 1964, then 1966, then 1968 and so on. That doesn't really count as a flashback, does it? I'm sorry if this sounds stupid, but I had to ask just to be sure.

If that is the progression of events, then that is perfectly fine. They aren't flashbacks if they're in chronological order.

You used a Jeanette Winterson quote (which I squeed about, by the way; she's my favorite author) for the parent prompt, and I was wondering, if I kept the quote in as part of my story, sort of like an epitaph, does it count in my word count?

Yes, it does count towards your word count. And I'm delighted you like Jeanette Winterson as well--I just reread Sexing The Cherry and it's so, so good.

    ANNOUNCEMENT

This wil be brief due to my current limited internet access, but I am aware there is a bit of a backlog on the queue at the moment. If you have two chapters currently in the queue already, and therefore cannot submit further challenge entries, then please e-mail your word document to me by midnight tomorrow so that I will know you had the story completed on time. If you do not have my e-mail address, then please PM one of the following people asking for it, as it's unlikely I will be online again in the next few days:

I had in mind the OC I wanted to focus on for this challenge, but now one of the prompts has been niggling at me regarding a different one. My question is, can I write an OC I've written in the past, as long as the story is completely different? Or does it need to be a new OC for me? Thanks!

My OC will be attending the same conference as Dumbledore. They don't know each other at the beginning but meet and become friends. Does that count for the holiday prompt?

Edit: Oh and I have the same question as Lori and Neil. I want to reuse a previously introduced OC. Can I, please?

    I'm with Lori

I have a couple of ideas, but they involve me using original characters who have appearred in some of my other stories. In one case it would be contemporaneous, in the other it would be almost 20 years after.

To put it another way: in one the OC would (like in his other appearances) be in his mid-twenties; in the other a three-year-old bit-part character would be all grown up.

    Re: Using Pre-Existing OCs

As I actually used a pre-existing OC in the last running of this challenge, I say that YES, you can use OCs you have already used in other stories of yours (not someone else's, or that would be ripping someone else's work off, lol). Just make sure that the stories you write for this challenge are sufficiently different and coincide minimally with previous events established for the re-used character.

    Aida:

I will go ahead and say that the conference is allowed as a holiday, but it should have some sort of tie into the holiday feel. I know that many business conferences are a guise for execs to get drunk together and play golf or an excuse to ship everyone to a fun place for a weekend. It doesn't have to be a party or funfest, but the characters should probably look at it and recognise the social aspects involved, if that makes any sense.

For the OC challenge, does the OC need to be human, or can s/he be a creature of humanlike intelligence and reasoning (and speech)?
