“Yeah,” Dennis said. “That’s not what I have a problem with, Abby. I have a problem with letting Colin be dead.”




“Do you know,” Mrs Weasley said softly, “how much I miss Fred?”

“Not bloody half as much as I miss him,” George said angrily. “Do you know what it’s like to have a missing half? You’ve always had Dad, there’s always someone there…”

Initially, Lavender wished she could remember something about her daughter’s father. The colour of his eyes, perhaps, or his height, whether he had kissed her, or she had kissed him.

But from being in the pub with Parvati, who was more than drunk as she, if that were possible, to the pressure of lips on lips, hands on hips, eager to ignore the momentousness of the end of the year in the brief embrace of each other’s limbs, there was nothing.

Later, she realised she no longer cared. He’d given her a daughter, and for that she gave him thanks.

There was nothing like a party at the Malfoy’s. Six-year-old Draco was uncharacteristically abuzz with excitement. He wasn’t sure what he liked most about his family’s annual celebration – the dazzling decorations, the food and sweets (the house elves always seemed to remember to include his favorites), or the other children to play with and boss around.

His parents sat in the drawing room, sipping champagne as they waited for the first guests to arrive. Lucius helped himself to a fancy biscuit.

“Delicious, darling,” he said. “You have really outdone yourself this New Year’s Eve.”

Narcissa smiled and inclined her head.

Whispering in his ear, she said, “If my dad is going to be glaring at us all night long, I’d rather ring in the new year with a big fat notice that I’m not letting you go and that he can just get over it.”

Lips twitching, Oliver said, “I hope you’re wearing steel-toed stilettos.”

The regrets came until one minute to the new year.

He relished the burn.

As the clock strikes midnight, they kiss.

It changes her life forever.

But she has what she always wanted.

“Louis and I are lovers,” Lily nearly shouts. “There. We’ve said it.”

“B-but...” James begins, but he gets no further.

“They love each other.” Heads turn towards Victoire. She continues, “They love each other, and that’s all that should matter, shouldn’t it?”

Katie spent her New Year’s Eve in some Muggle’s flat in some city safely away from familiar faces. When the clock struck twelve and the people started cheering in the streets, the man beside her was snoring and she felt numb and empty.

She fetched a bottle of cheap champagne from his liquor cabinet and looked out the window at the masses of people and lights.

“Happy New Year’s, Fred,” she murmured. The champagne hissed down her throat and she cried because this was nothing like a new beginning at all.
