Yule Log

Yule logs, in this competition, are a type of cake eaten at Christmas. Although there are many variations, they are basically a swiss roll covered in chocolate butter icing (frosting) and decorated to look as if it has been snowing, or whatever.

Draco grumbled, “It’s bad enough we had to invite a flock of Mudbloods to our party to keep face, but do we really have to eat their disgusting food, too?”

Narcissa sighed. “Please, just pretend to like it. You have to eat at least one Muggle thing.”

Draco tentatively put a slice on his plate. Cutting off a piece with his fork, he ate it. It was…it was ecstasy.

Rita thought of speaking all of a sudden, but decided not to. The look on the man’s face was imperceptible. Yet he was that man. Rita knew his intentions.

He was frosty. That was the only way Rita could describe who he was. She’d thought about meeting him, but then what would she do?

He smiled slightly, then took out his wand, a flash of green light.

The night was cold, frosty. Rita Skeeter walked down the path. Voldemort stopped in her way…

Most of all, she looked forward to her kids’ drawings in the window frost.

When Bill and Charlie were little, they had contests to see who could draw the best creature on the window.

Percy usually took the time to practice writing his name.

Fred and George, Molly learned, had to be watched, or else obscene images would mysteriously appear.

Ron would draw anything and everything Quidditch.

Her voice was competing with his memory of Salazar, saying it could never work between her and Godric, because he was a wizard and she Muggle.

“Why not?” Godric shouted.

“Because of the frost,” she said, gesturing to the fingers of ice creeping across the window. “Because you do not understand what it is to be cold, to be hungry, to not have magic at the tips of your fingers. That’s why.”

Susan knew she meant no harm by the question. Daphne was smiling warmly, and her eyes swam with possibilities.

But Susan didn’t empathise anymore. The pain in her heart had frosted over with a strong desire to hurt.

“Mine was twice as big. I still have it.”

Daphne only hummed and kissed Susan’s shoulder, but Susan could see the pain in her eyes.

Slowly the frost covering his heart melted. He had to go home.

“Lily, this is more than that! None of that matters compared to this!” The plea in Severus’s voice was almost tangible. “Lily, please…”

“Shut up!” she cried. “Just leave me alone!” Not waiting for him to renew his efforts, Lily bolted up the steps toward an unoccupied corridor. When she was alone, she sank to the floor, the chill making the oncoming tears burn on her cheeks. Tears for bygone days, tears for her parents, tears of grief.
