Your student sounds very like Neville. If we're honest, no one could see why he was a Gryffindor, could they? Until book 5, darling Neville was a Hufflepuff - ie not really suited to any house. Yes he stood up to his friends at the end of PS, and he answered Malfoy back, but it was minor things that didn't really mark him out as particularly Gryffindor - cetainly not in the early days.

I don't think your character needs to understand why she's in Gryffindor. She'll want to understand, but the Hat isn't obliged to explain. Perhaps she argues with the hat, and that's quite reckless of her.

Or perhapes she could even be like Hermione, having a very strong sense of right and wrong. That seems to be what got Hermione into Gryffindor, despite her Ravenclaw brains. And possibly Dumbledore as well.

    Brand New Story!

Having a strong sense of right and wrong is the strongest Hufflepuff trait there is... it's not a Gryffindor trait at all.

I agree with "Equinox Chick" - the hat has no reason to lie, but it doesn't have to share what it thinks unless it wants to. It will be a good bit of characteization if your character tries to figure out why she is there, maybe in the end she will realize some Gryffindor qualities she didn't know she had.

Perhaps your character could be placed in Gryffindor from the get-go and the hat doesn't say anything to her except yell "GRYFFINDOR!" then you can have her all confused and all like 'why aren't I in Slytherin' or whatever and she can discover why she's a Gryffindor as the story goes, if it works like that. Kind of like Neville. I think it's possible that an 11 year old doesn't completely know herself and therefore whouldn't know why she's in Gryffindor.

Mmm... I envision the conflict as the reverse.

She wants to be in Gryffindor desperately (despite not necessarily having the traits) and perhaps even the Hat is baffled.

If the Hat shouted Gryffindor immediately, she would be pleased. Her Sorting is intended to be a huge conflict between her and the Hat. Or at least, she'll see it that way.

    Ah, so more like Harry...
Well perhaps she could slightly "argue" with the Sorting Hat slightly, like if the Sorting Hat saw that she was really smart but she had a strong sense of right and wrong, then the Sorting Hat would maybe think out loud? I remember Hermione saying the Sorting Hat considered putting her in Ravenclaw...So maybe the Hat thinks something along the lines of "A Ravenclaw or a Gryffindor?" or like, "a strong mind, no doubt about that, and strong sense of right and wrong..." that sort of thing...
Does my post even make sense?
So yes, maybe she could plead her case a little if she at least displays some sort of Gryffindor-like traits.
