    Harry Potter book word counts

When reading fanfiction, I've always wondered how long certain fics are relative to the Harry Potter books. However, as I have no idea how many words each book contains, I have no point of reference.

So, does anyone know the word count for each of the Harry Potter books?

    Thanks in advance,

According to a certain search engine ... (Edit: It was Yahoo)

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone - 76,944 words
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - 85,141 words
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - 107,253 words
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - 190,637 words
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - 257,045 words
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - 168,923
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Approximately 198,227, the Scholastic count has yet to be announced

There are approximately 250 words per page so you could count the pages and grab a calculator ...

I would check but not even I'm obsessed enough to count each word

I checked in my e-books, and the count is about the same as that Carole posted. However I can't say that for sure, as it counted the page numbers/Chapter headings too, but it was roughly 500 words more per book, so I guess that's about the number you are looking for.

Now, what I always found very interesting (and this thread has given me a reason to look it up) is words per chapter, as I always wonder whether fanfiction chapters are long or short compared to those in the books. "Dobby's Reward" (the last chapter in CoS) has a bit less than 3790 words, "The White Tomb" (the last chapter in HBP) has about 5490.

LOL. Well I counted the words on a page in PoA - not the entire page, only until I got to 250. It went over, though not by much - I'd guess maybe 270. But you have to remember that there are many versions and sizes of the book (paperback vs hardback, etc), so approximate words per page is going to be hard. Still, it ends up being roughly the same as the count Carole posted - or at least, my copy is.
