Can't Everyone Talk to Snakes?
Self-Punishment in House-Elves
Was it just Dobby who hit himself with things when he thought he'd done wrong? Or do other house-elves do that as well?
I have a house-elf plot idea (The Great House-Elf Revolt) and I'm wondering whether house-elves could actually have a revolt without beating themselves to death. >.> But I really want to be able to explain all the old stories of elf mischief, so I'm trying to figure this out.

Kreacher also had to punish himself when he disobeyed orders, and Dumbledore referred to "the enchantments on their kind." I think it's pretty well established that house-elves are all bound by the compulsion to punish themselves for disobedience. But that doesn't preclude them figuring out clever ways around their orders (or else just being willing to disobey and then punish themselves). E.g., Kreacher.

I suppose I could use a Kreacher approach (AKA holding to the letter of the law, rather than the spirit). Thanks for the help. =)
