Oh My Gordic, Tim, I had read about your character but had never visited this thread. Now I've read all the posts (yes, all of them), and Dieter is such a great character that I want to slap him. Or exorcise him. Anyways, I couldn't resist stopping by to ask a few questions, because he is addicting, kind of like trying to convince strong conservatives to accept gay marriage, or Laura Mallory to read Harry Potter. It's basically the equivalent of beating your head against a brick wall, but you can't keep from trying!

Can a Slav or a Jew or any other Untermensch be a good person?

Well, they're not even fully human, so no.

In that case, could they be good sub humans? I mean, there are some pretty nice cats and dogs out there… (I feel so weird asking this.)

So… you say that you can't prove the existence of a subhuman soul. I can accept that. But that means that you can't prove that you have a soul either. Which means it is impossible to compare a subhuman and Aryan soul, because you can't even prove souls exist. In which case you can only compare their physical traits. So what this means is that basically Aryans are better merely because they are blonder, have bluer eyes, and are apparently stronger… is that the case?

You also say that Untermenschen have animal-like minds, and "lack the ability to feel or comprehend what it is to be fully human". In that case, wouldn't it be wrong to hate them for not being human, and for actions that, being animals, they aren't fully responsible for? It would be kind of like hitting a kitten because it instinctively scratched you…

Here's a little sample of my background: I'm part Spanish, Italian, Basque, American Indian, and yes, part Aryan. Would you trust me?

A) Just how strong is your devotion to Hiler now that you've found Grindelwald? Which one do you respect more?

My respect and loyalty lies with the Führer, obviously. Remember, I've only been at Durmstrang since September, whereas I've lived in the Muggle world all my life. And it is Adolf Hitler that delivered the Reich from its suffering, and made us feel proud again. I suppose wizards would say the same thing about Grindelwald, but I am first and foremost a Muggle-born wizard.

B) Do you like buckets?

What does this question have to do with ANYTHING?

C) Did you ever read any fantasy books in the past? What is your opinion of the whole fantasy genre? Do you find it laughable, now that you know what the real magical world is like?

I never really read fantasy at all - I preferred to read about things like tanks and fighter planes. There are huge inaccuracies in fantasy fiction now that I've been exposed to the magical world, but there are just as many errors in how wizards see Muggles. I don't think the fantasy genre is laughable because there are still lots of things about the magical world that I still know nothing about. However, I do find wizarding perceptions of the Muggle world ridiculous.

No matter how good a dog is, it is still a dog. Same goes for an Untermensch - they're still sub-human, no matter how well behaved they are. Sure, some of them could be good compared to the average sub-human, but that doesn't mean that they are Good (with a capital "G").

And I'm curious - why do you feel weird asking this question?

Not at all. What makes someone human is not only the physical aspect but the mental. Full human beings can not only think but reason, and feel emotions unique to humans like compassion, love, humility, duty, and have things like creativity. The reason why Untermenschen aren't fully human is that they cannot feel as we do.

Call it a higher intellect or a soul or whatever you want, but it is what's inside the head that makes the Aryan supreme, and not just the physical body.

No it wouldn't. Remember that Untermenschen are sub-humans. Are there such things as sub-cats? Cats are expected to behave like cats, including scratching people. Untermenschen are sub-humans because they FAIL to act like full human beings.

I can't say I can. Regardless of what race you are, I already can't trust you, because you only provided me a sample of your background. What else are you hiding?

Moving to a different country doesn't change who you are. Nationality may change but the blood stays the same - your blood is what is important. Let's say some Untermenschen move to Germany (that can't happen, but for the purposes of this example, we'll ignore that) and reproduce. Their children won't be Aryans just because they were born in Germany - they are still Untermenschen because it is part of their genetic makeup.

So no. My answer hasn't changed.

No, it doesn't bother me at all. Though I might not know many things about the magical world, most wizards know nothing at all about the Muggle world. It balances out.

The Jew is a race, or rather a vile sub-species of humanity - they are physically and mentally impure. An Aryan who decides to practice their disgusting rituals is a disgrace and cannot sink any lower, for he has rejected his fundamental humanity.

Well, I don't think slapping Dieter or exorcising him will do anything to change him - just like that brick wall, he is frustratingly immobile. And I think it is useless to try beating either of them, especially the wall! I assume using a flamethrower or something would be very effective against Dieter, but that won't do anything to change his opinions. I suggest just letting time take its course, and waiting to see what he feels once 1945 rolls around.

And speaking of which, I better get back to writing the story, which is still in 1938! I've had so many questions on this thread that these interviews are a lot longer than the actual story! But I'm not complaining. I really do enjoy these interviews, and I appreciate everyone's input and questions that have helped me flesh out Dieter's character. So thank you!

Now, I'm not feeling energetic enough to write about the next cartoon. Maybe I'll edit this post to include it later or just write in a a later response or something.

Probably whatever colour vomit is - it's hard to describe.

I have no idea - that's not something I think about, because I am who I am and there is nothing anyone can do to change your race. I was born Aryan and I will die Aryan, so I have no reason to think about what I would feel if I was born differently. It's kind of a silly question, really.

My worst memory? I can't say I've ever been emotionally scarred, so I can't really think of any bad memories, save for when I was caned in front of class once or twice a few years ago. I'm not fond of that not because it was particularly painful (well, it was, actually), but because it was embarrassing more than anything else. But then again, everyone got their hands whacked from time to time, so I'm not alone.

Concerning nightmares, I vaguely recall one that involved Jews and Josef Stalin somehow. Can't remember it much, but I think they ate me alive or something. Not pleasant!

Favorite memory? Favorite dream?

My favourite memory would have to be riding a broomstick for the first time - it was amazing! I couldn't fly it terribly well, but I've always wanted to get airborne somehow, and I never would have thought I would ride a broom before riding in an aeroplane. On a broomstick, I love how you feel weightless in dives (or when falling off) - it's just so... weird!

I have trouble remember good dreams in detail, but I think I had a good one a few days ago that involved the Führer riding a dragon which lit communists on fire with its fiery breath.

Well, I like dragons, even though I've never even seen one - any creature that can shoot flames is automatically interesting! However, for normal animals, I like dogs. Never actually had one, though...

I would say that Dieter popped out of nowhere. Ever since I read Deathly Hallows, I've thought about Grindelwald's Germany, but once I decided to write about it, I wanted from the start to write the story from the Germans' perspective to make things interesting. It all happened really quickly, and that's how Dieter was created. I wanted my protagonist to be a Muggle-born Nazi fanatic, so I could show the similarities and differences between the two totalitarian Germanies. Plus, I just thought the whole concept of his character was very appealing, though slightly disturbing!

Aww, you believe in true love! Do you know how rare that makes you in the population of eleven and twelve year old boys? What about the rest of your family, do they? And what’s the main opinion in Durmstrang?

At my school, if you hit a girl you would be called a girl-basher. If you become one of those, then you are ignored by most people for about a week. Do you have any social offences like that in your old Muggle school, at Durmstrang, or just in Germany in general?

I have blue eyes, and I used to have blonde hair, but as I got older it changed to a mix of blonde, gold, brown and ginger. So would I be considered a perfect Aryan? (Say if I was German and believed all of that rubbish). What I mean, is would I be considered one of the best candidates to producing offspring of a perfect human being?

Hello Ema. Don't apologise for asking questions that have already been asked before - I've answered so many that I've lost track!

I'm not really religious. I suppose I believe in God, but religion is something that never crosses my mind - I don't think about it, and to be quite frank, it's BORING. I've also never gotten into the habit of praying, except when I'm in trouble or I want the Almighty to help me on some difficult test.

Neither of my parents are particularly religious either - Vati more so than Mutti. He describes himself as an atheist, but that didn't stop him from marrying Mutti in a church. I don't know if he's always been an atheist or if he only became so during the war - I've never asked.

My mother, in contrast, is more religious, but not by much. I remember she used to take us to the church on Sundays until 1933, when I was five - I hated going to church. It was really boring and a waste of time.

I think Mutti stopped taking us to church not because she realised we were bored (she already knew that), but probably because she found more contentment through National Socialism. After all, was it God who saved Germany and made jobs and restored our pride, or the Führer?

I believe in Darwin and Evolution. Even if Adam and Eve actually were the first humans, remember that they were only the starting point. Over thousands of generations, certain branches of the human family tree were corrupted and became their own categories of sub-humanity, and separate from the fully human branch.

And "Untermenschen" is pronounced the way it's spelled: Un-ter-mensch-en

Well, obviously it's not very good for Aryans to fraternise with Untermenschen - it's not just disgusting, but it's against the law too. People of different species shouldn't mingle in any way, shape, or form.

But then again, you don't find many sub-humans in Germany, so this isn't much of a problem!

At Durmstrang, there are some people who look down on Muggleborns like me, but they're very old-fashioned and usually obnoxious. I don't like those kinds of people, and I'm not alone in this thinking. Even Grindelwald himself is committed to eliminating these ridiculous old prejudices - he wants us wizards to be united and strong, and put aside our internal differences. He's a lot like Hitler in this respect.

I'm decent enough at Transfiguration. I'm not stellar at it, but I do well enough - I find Charms much more interesting, not to mention more useful.

My wand's core is a dragon heartstring from a Norwegian Ridgeback. Concerning the wood, it is rigid, dark ebony, and 33 centimetres long.

And I don't know much about wands in general, and I don't know what Gregorovich's personal policy on wand cores is.

I like Eagle Owls - they have these feathers on their heads that look like ears. And I don't know what I'd name an owl. I'll have to think about that.

Well, it depends on whether she was just playing or if she was deliberately trying to hurt me. But if a girl tried to hurt me, I won't hesitate to defend myself.

And I think magic is just a different kind of force - physical is another. Depending on the situation, one can be more useful than the other.

What is the worst you have ever been physically hurt? At the hands of another person?

A Bludger knocked me off my broom during Quidditch class, and I broke both of my wrists when I hit the ground. I wasn't that high up, but it hurt quite a lot.

At the hands of another person... I haven't broken anything, and haven't suffered anything serious enough to make me stay in the hospital wing overnight.

Are you good at dealing with pain?

All right, I suppose. I don't like pain, though. It's... painful.

What other Magic schools do you know about besides Hogwarts in England and Beauxbatons in France?

I know a little about that other school in Germany in the west, but I've forgotten it's name. Besides, that school isn't important, because it's been closed and all students are sent to Durmstrang instead.

Wowza, I've been reading this thread for the better part of two days (not continuously, of course; I've been doing things in between, such as sleeping), and I just keep getting more and more intrigued. Dieter is such an interesting character, because his views and values are the total opposite of what is considered morally and politically correct today. I'm somewhat disgusted by his ideals (and by 'somewhat disgusted,' I mean 'ridiculously disturbed'), but I also really pity him. As I continue reading about him, I keep realizing the extent to which the Nazis brainwashed the German youth. I can't help but think that it's not his fault for believing all this Aryan nonsense, even though I want to shake him most of the time. *sighs* I completely disagree with his opinions, but at the same time I feel I have an understanding of his personality and the way he views the world: Aryan supremacy, to him, is a fact, not something that can be discussed or changed depending on the whims of politicians. I've begun to have a soft spot for this misguided kid, even though I know he'll grow up to be a monster; I can see, through his answers to these questions, that it's just how he was brought up and what was forced down his throat since early childhood. You've done a fabulous job with this character, and I'm most definitely going to check out your story when I have more time.

Anyway, now for some questions for Dieter:

1. How do you pronounce your name? I'm sorry, but I don't speak German and I'm afraid I've been pronouncing it wrong this whole time.

2. Do you feel that Grindelwald's ideals conflict with Hitler's? Doesn't Grindelwald's vision of Wizard supremacy mean that, to him at least, non-magical Aryans - even Hitler! - are of a lower class? In keeping with that, what would you do if you had to choose between the two? Would you be willing to give up magic in order to be loyal to your country?

3. Would you support the murder/death of all Untermenschen (I don't know if I spelled that right)? You've said that they're a different species, but you wouldn't want to kill, let's say, all dogs, would you?

1. How do you pronounce your name? I'm sorry, but I don't speak German and I'm afraid I've been pronouncing it wrong this whole time.

It's pronounced the way it's spelled: Die-ter Hey-drich

Helpful, isn't he? Anyway, his first name is pronounced "Dee-ter," with a long E sound for the first syllable. The first syllable of his last name has a long I sound (like in "aye" or "hi"), so it would sound like "Hi-drich" However, I like to pronounce it like "Hey-drich," which I think sounds a little better, even though it isn't accurate to the language.

2. Do you feel that Grindelwald's ideals conflict with Hitler's? Doesn't Grindelwald's vision of Wizard supremacy mean that, to him at least, non-magical Aryans - even Hitler! - are of a lower class? In keeping with that, what would you do if you had to choose between the two? Would you be willing to give up magic in order to be loyal to your country?

Don't be silly. Grindelwald doesn't say Aryan wizards are any better than Aryan Muggles. We're just... unique. When wizards come out from hiding, we shall live together with Muggles and support each other, and life will be better for all. I would never need to choose between the two, because there will be a time when the world of wizards and Muggles will be one.

Evidently, Dieter has a very vague understanding of Grindelwald's ideology...

3. Would you support the murder/death of all Untermenschen (I don't know if I spelled that right)? You've said that they're a different species, but you wouldn't want to kill, let's say, all dogs, would you?

Why would you suggest such a thing? Aryans are not senseless murderers - that's what Bolsheviks and Jews do! We're better than that. Besides, it would be very difficult to kill every Untermensch on the planet - making them work and be useful for once would be much more practical.

What I find most hilarious about this thread is that people keep trying to ask Dieter questions to confuse him out of his Nazi beliefs and turn him into a sweet little angel. As though Dieter is a real person who is really anwering these questions while Tim types them out. Do they think Dieter just has no hands and can't type out the thread himself? But, in a way, it also speaks a lot to how well this character has been developed. The best characters are the ones that can be seen as real people. These are also the ones that interest people the most. And Dieter is just the right balance of outstanding and ordinary to make an excellent story.
