This may seem a stupid question... but it says to be sorted I have to PM SortingHat. I can't find a user called SortingHat. Do they exist or is there something else I don't know?

Welcome to the boards. SortingHat isn't actually a user, but you can PM it. Just go into your Inbox and select Send a New Message. Where it asks for recipients just type SortingHat. Then you can send a message asking for the Sorting Quiz.

Though this question has been answered numerous times and is in no way relevant to anyone involved, I shall answer that question. SortingHat is an administrative account, the password for which is shared by the mod and admin staff, and is checked frequently to fill any sorting requests or complete any sorting quizzes. The names of sortees is then sent to the relevant Head of House, who adds them into the usergroup, thus allowing the newly sorted member to see not only their own house, but several other previously-invisible forums, as well.
