Sorry if this has been asked before (I'm sure it has). I've searched the Reference Desk but couldn't find what I was looking for.
I'm looking for dates of birth for The Founders or for the founding of Hogwarts.
Could I, for instance, use the date 977 AD as a birth date for Helga Hufflepuff or is that too wide of the mark?

Possibly. We now that Hogwarts is about a thousand years old in Harry's time, but I'm certainly that that is not the exact age. So yes, 977 could definantly be a possible birth year for Helga Hufflepuff.
Hogwarts as "about" 1000 years old as of its first mention in a book that was taking place in 1990AD. So... 990AD.
An interesting time in British history, not the least because Ethelred the UnReady decided to raze Strathclyde in 1000, and the reasons are lost in the mists of time. In my founder's fiction (Follow the Basilisk Home) I have Helga as being the oldest and wisest of the four.
I think you have free rein to imagine it as you want!
Yes, "thousand years ago" seems to refer to around 990 AD.
If you think that Helga was just 23 and capable of creating such a large magical instituion at that time, you can have her age at that time.
But I think that in the ages past, wizards lived for even more time than they do now. So then you could have her much older if you want, and yet it could be young according to standards at that time.

What I want is an anniversary to be taking place in 1977 - 1000 years seemed to fit but I think 13(she wouldn't be 23 ) is too young for Helga to have been a head teacher :) - if she was born in 977.
Thank-you for your help if anyone has any other suggestions as to what anniversary I could make it (must be connected to Hogwarts) then please let me out of my misery! It's not a major part of the fic but I need a reason for them to hold a ball and I wanted it to be something that connected the school to the Founders.
