Scorpius Malfoy

On Scorpius being an only child: I actually doubt it. I mean, if you take a look at the Black family tree, there is only one only child- Draco Malfoy. I think that purebloods like to have a few children, like three or four, but look down on the Weasleys who have more children than they can afford. I think that Draco was an only child either because his parents were unable to have any more, or because they just didn't want others. I sort of think the first one. Lucius was always setting high standards for his son (remember in CoS in the shop in Knockturn alley?) and Narcissa was babying him. I think that this points to the fact that they were unable to have more children. Therefor, I would definitely think that Scorpius had siblings.

On Slytherin House: Rhi for HP is right, that prejudice does come from canon, and the fact that Harry himself is quite prejudiced. I think that people sometimes forget to think about the qualities that put people in Slytherin. The qaulities for each House can be put to good or bad use.

Do you think Scorpius, unlike his father, would be able to cast the charm? What would his charm take the form of? Why do you think this?

She said that before DH came out; we don't know that it remains so after the end of the war. It's possible Draco learned later, especially when he and his parents were no longer running the imminent threat of murder, in jail, and having an uninvited houseguest who throws torture around like candy.

As for Scorpius, I think this depends on his upbringing and circumstances. I simply don't see the Malfoy family turning their collective backs on Dark Magic because the spells are so powerful. And this is relevant, because assuming Scorpius is brought up by knowing (or at least respecting) Dark Magic and its uses, he may also be taught that "light" magic (which the Patronus is really the purest form of) is, oh, I dunno, "used by Mudbloods and blood traitors because they are too self-righteous (or too incompetent) to taint themselves with the truly powerful magic" or something.

If that is similar to the environment that Scorpius was brought up in, and assuming that's a rhetoric he buys into, then no, I don't see him casting a Patronus.

The Patronus was immensely powerful to Harry, because it repelled Dementors (which took a special interest in him). In fact, I'm quite certain that a big part of that interest stemmed from the disembodied bit of the Dark Lord's soul stuffed in his scar. Neville, too, saw some pretty horrifying things (specifically the torture of his parents into insanity only a few days after James & Lily were killed, and not only that, he had the lasting effects to deal with!), and the Dementors weren't viewing him as an all-you-can-eat buffet. The Order also used the Patronus as a messenger spell, but beyond that, it's a very specialised and mostly useless spell.

The Patronus is not the only way to deal with the Dementors. Harry & Snape got in an argument about this early in Harry's sixth year, in the middle of a Defence Against the Dark Arts class. So Snape, at least, knew of another way (I'm personally betting one of those things is Occlumency, for myriad reasons). It's a safe bet that if Snape knew it, the Malfoys probably also did (especially if that thing is Occlumency, since Bellatrix knew Occlumency, too, AND she lived through twelve years in Azkaban without becoming a gibbering idiot.) Therefore, by extension, it's reasonable to assume that at some point, Scorpius will also.

So if he can control/tackle/defend himself against Dementors, then the only other use he'd have for a Patronus would be as a messenger spell, and I'm pretty confident that there's another messenger spell floating around. Maybe one that functions differently (the Patronus comes as what amounts to a totemic representation of yourself, and speaks with your voice, but cannot be imitated. However, it seems to speak at anyone within hearing distance.) Maybe the "Death Eater messenger" spell would be more subtle, and lean less heavily on the Transfiguration aspect?

But if Scorpius is brought up thinking ill of "light magic", doesn't have any particular need for a Patronus, then no, I can't see him putting any effort into casting one. And whatever else that spell is, you've got to throw a fair bit of concentration, power and effort behind it; it's not something you're going to be casting by magic.

Now, that's altogether different from if I think he (or his father) have the raw magical strength to cast it — I do. Especially now that Draco's out from under some frankly miserable living conditions. But they'd have to see a need for it, not have a way around it and respect the need enough to want to try it.

Between Slytherin and Hufflepuff, I would say Slytherin. (Whatever the may be, Malfoys AREN'T kind and loyal.)
But I'd choose Ravenclaw of them all. Scorpius just strikes me as a smart, witty kid!

I can see Scorpius in any house and have read some great fics with Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and even Gryffindor Scorpiuses.

Sure Draco would be disappointed if he weren't in Slytherin but he would never disown him. Draco was a little boy when he said he'd leave if he were in Hufflepuff and while I'm sure he has no great affection for the house as he's grown older, he'd make an exception for Scorpius. I'm sure he'd feel the house must have improved to have earned a Malfoy! :p

And yeah, I like the idea of Scorpius having siblings. Especially a little sister. It's possible JKR may change her mind on his only child status when the Scottish Book comes out after all.

As one of those writers who has their fortune being seized - what canon doesn't support that? Canon ends with the war and then we get a brief glimpse of the Malfoys 19 years later. If you have some super secret info on what happened in those 19 years, please share.

What in canon suggests that the Malfoy fortune was that old? I can remember of nothing and there are some suggestions that it might be quite new. Like Bellatrix referring to Malfoy Manor as "our family home" in the opening chapter of DH. Bellatrix isn't a Malfoy so that's an odd thing to say. Unless, maybe, Malfoy Manor was once Black Manor.

I see the Malfoys as being new money myself. New, in this case, meaning their fortune was founded by Abraxas or his father.

What Greengrass fortune? Why assume the Greengrasses are wealthy? I don't think all purebloods are quite like the Black, Malfoys and Lestranges. (The Weasleys are evidence of that. The Longbottoms too, possibly.)

I was wondering, how do you imagine a twelve-year-old Scorpius reacting when he first came down of the Hogwarts Express after his first year? Considering he didn't go home for Christmas, so he hasn't been able to see his parents in around ten months :eek:

Also, I guess I should point out that he's sick (he doesn't know it yet...) so he experienced a bit of a weigh loss and looks very tired...

Oh and, uhm... I guess this is not the thread to ask this question but... how do you see Draco reacting?

And didn't Lupin say in PoA that the Patronus is ONE way of fighting off Dementors? I'm not completely sureabout this, and since I'm on vacationI don't have my book with me ):

I am in the process of converting my stories to Word formatting (in the hopes of learning bookbinding one day), and I find myself pondering what sort of handwriting Scorpius Malfoy would have.

I imagine him as being brought up as very much a blueblood. This influences his behavior a great deal, but deep down, he has a good heart. If this helps at all in giving suggestions.

I'm thinking of writing a Next-Generation story, and I was wondering: Where do you think Scorpius would live? I'm leaning towards Malfoy Manor, but I can also imagine them moving out, due to bad memories.

So far, my version of Scorpius is in Slytherin, but without being an evil, pure-blood elitist. He is quite arrogant and a little spoiled, not exactly kind, but not a bully. He is also quite intelligent. Do you think this is too OOC, based on the way his father and grandparents behave.

I think Scorpius's handwriting would be neat, but elegant. It would not be overly loopy, the way I imagine Narcissa's handwriting, but it would be a lot better than Ron's scribbles.

The thing about the next generation characters is that we know next to nothing about them. They are basically Ocs. I would say that you could portray Scorpius however you want, as long as you offer good reason behind his actions.

Something I would recommend would be to read as many next generation stories as you can. That might help you in getting a better idea of how you yourself see Scorpius as a character.
