Around how many days does it usually take for a fic to be approved or rejected after the author posts it:confused: ? Is there a point where it's been too long and should contact a mod:confused: ?
Thx a lot!:)

I was sure this was answered around here somewhere, but maybe not.
Usually stories are in the queue for no more than a week. We've had a little trouble with our notice-mailing system, so you can check under "Manage Stories" to see if something has been deleted without the notice coming to you. If it has, find your category mod (That's in the Questions forum here, too) and PM or email her. Otherwise, don't worry unless it's been more than nine or ten days. We try to keep it under seven, but occasionally real life happens.
Using the forums for information and finding a beta-reader or two is a good way to keep that rejection from happening. *gets off handy soapbox, dusts neatly for next person*

Why do some fics get deleted? One of my favourites In One Breathe is nowhere to be seen and I'm very distraught :P Is it because they aren't updated and thus take up space needed for other fics? (if that's possible...)

Sorry if it's been asked before, but I just went to edit my signature and it keeps saying that it is over 350 characters. So I checked on Word, and there was 168 characters (including spaces) in it! I refreshed it and all, but it keeps saying the same thing!
Help?
Ahhh, I see, thanks VV!

Theatregirl, I think we're comfy for the moment -- but thanks! Keep an eye out for announcements; the site does keep growing. Meanwhile, I'm sure you can find lots of ways to stay busy and help out other writers.
sirius_rocks, there was a housecleaning some months ago that removed incomplete fics that had not been updated in a very long time. The authors were forewarned so they could save the fics if they wished. Also, some authors voluntarily remove their own fics from the site, complete or otherwise.
babekitty, I'm getting a much higher count of 293 with spaces, and that's without the HTML tags you're using. If you un-bold, un-underline, and don't format your fonts, that'll cut it back, but you have to count the banner's url and things in your total character count.

Is there some kind of glitch in the system? The first chapter of my fanfic was deleted after 5 days in the queue and I recieved no rejection letter:confused:   :( . I saved it in a Word document, but I'd like to know if there's anything I can do to make sure it dosen't happen again
Thanks!

How do you put a link inside a banner? I had it once, but then my sig got deleted for being too tall/too wide. I'd also like clarification on how you measure pixels, if anyone can.

Wand_Waver2006 - Links are put in like this:
[url = linkto website][ img]link to image[/ img] [/ url]
without the spaces. For most browsers, you can right-click an image, go down to properties, and the dimensions of the image will be revealed. Add dimensions of different pictures appropriately to measure your entire signature.

Make a post in the thread saying you have a beta and ask the mods to lock the thread and someone will come along and do it for you.

Hi, I'm a new member here and am having some problems navigating the site, could you please help me? For one, when I first became a member, I signed up as part of a poetry thing, I don't quite remember what it was , but I can't find it again. One of my friends thinks it's under "Room of Requirements," but I can't find that either! I'm kind of at a loss here. Can you help me?
Also, I don't know what to do to get started. My main reason for becoming a member was to be a Beta for people while also getting to read some awesome stories, but I don't know how to go about doing that either. Do I just go to one of the Beta threads and post something saying "I'm available to beta your work?" That kind of thing sounded slightly rude, and my friend told me that this a more polite forum than what I'm normally use to. Can you help me, please. If you can, I thank you a million times over...

Ryosha24, I believe you are looking for the poetry subforum which is located as part of the Room of Requirement. When you are in that forum, at the top of the page there is a subforum called Poetry Anyone.
Second, if you go to the Beta Services for Sale forum, you can post an ad to beta there. Read the "Rules to Read Before Posting" and that will give you a form to fill out listing your strengths and availability and such. You can then post your thread. Also, if you go to the forum where people are looking for betas, you can respond to those threads and offer to beta for them instead of waiting for someone to respond to your ad.
Good luck!

Hi Moddies!
I was just wondering... you know how the queue closes on December 23rd? Well, do you take a break literally, and not even look at the ones in the queue, or do you look at the ones and you can validate/delete any that made it before that mark?
I guess what i mean to ask is, do you still mod fics that are in the queue over the break? Or do they just sit there until it opens back up again?
Sorry if this is quite a stupid question... i know you all have lives as well as being a Mod here on MNFF!

I’ve combed through previous Ask a Mod threads, and while I’ve seen questions relating to HTML tags for image and HTML tags for creating large spaces between words, I’ve not seen a question regarding formatting tabs or indents with HTML tags.
For example, I have a submission for the December Poetry Challenge and I would like to indent alternating lines:
First line of poem
Indented/Tabbed second line of poem
Third line of poem
Indented/Tabbed fourth line of poem
I did some research and have apparently found that there is no specific HTML tag for inserting a TAB, but is there a way to format the submission so it looks something like the example here?
As always, thanks very much for your help!

In light of the review brouhaha and MithrilQuill's advise at the end of the comments, I was wondering whether a Mod could delete a duplicate review on one of my stories. It's on Chasing Fireflies, chapter four. Not a biggie, looks like the reader just hit the shiny button one too many times. :p
Thanks much, you Mods are wonderful!

Just on a note similar, could I have the extremely long spam review deleted please from chapter seven of "Together at Last" it's kinda making the page go hay-wire and it's oput of shape.
Thanks! Abbi :)
GinnyPotter- I'm not quite sure, to be honest. *isn't very involved with challenges* I'd ask Mithril or search through the Gauntlet forum for any information.
Lurid- Yeah, it does. Lots of animations really slow down a page -- especially for those folks with dialup.
Rox x Hermione- Mods still mod when the queue is closed. If your fic is in there before it closes, you probably won't have to wait until it opens again for it to be looked at.
myownmuggle- I'm really not that great with html, so I can't suggest some magic code, but have you tried just using a few spaces? That might work...
Snape's Talon- Took care of it. :)
babekitty_92- Is it the "soooooo good" with a thousand O's? I'll take care of it; sorry I can't just edit the O's out and let you keep the review... the edit option doesn't seem to like me.
Just a question - what are Slurp spiders?
When you click on the Quick Links> Who's online, it has these "Slurp Spiders".
...
Any idea what they are? Are they harmful?

Ok, sorry for another question.
But, I wrote a Christmas fic for one of the prompts in the Christmas Challenges. But I have two stories in the queue, and I put one in on Wednesday, and another yesterday. And I know that you are only allowed to have two stories in, if they are submitted to different categories.
So, I guess my question is: Can we have three stories in the queue, if one of them is a challenge?
Thanks!

I've got a bordering-on-spam review on the final chapter of my fic Chasing Fireflies. It's the one regarding "Blood and Chocolate", a published book featuring werewolves that has nothing to do with the Potterverse.
I'm a bit torn as to what I'd like seen done with this review. On one hand, I want to go by the rules set in place. On the other, the review presented the opportunity for me to gently remind readers that the review page is not the area to "chat" with the author about other books.
I'll leave the decision in the Mods hands.

-Lipington just informed me my question was asked by her earlier. My delete button isn't working-

Should notes to moderators be included in summaries of stories or in the text of the story itself? (I put one in the summary, and went back to edit into the text of a story. I'm wondering if I really HAD to do that - editing does push a story back in the queue, after all...)

You may have TWO stories submitted at any one time. That's to any category or subcategory. This rule was brought in so that you could have one story in queue and still enter a challenge, but it's been relaxed to include all categories.

I prefer them in the text of the story, that way there is no chance of them being overlooked.

You could try using the search function. I'm fairly sure this list cropped up in General Fanfiction Discussion at one time.

Give your submission seven days. Sometimes, especially around the holidays, traffic in the queue is pretty ugly so you may have to wait up to eight days.

Threads in almost all the forums are moderated, which means the moderator must manually approve of the thread you've posted before it shows up to you and other forum members. Give it time; if the thread is relevant and up to standards, it'll be approved within a day.

AurorGirl101: There are no minimum qualifications to apply to mod. Obviously some of those things, such as PI accredidation are helpful, but we will not reject your application because you are not. The quality of your writing and your ability to appropriately beta/edit/follow guidelines are the most important. Send your application and references to deaninemnff@gmail.com.
BlackClaude, as far as I am aware, you editing your chapter should not send it back into the queue.
Unicorngirl, your story has been in queue ten days. Yes that is more time than we like to see; however, you can be assured that the mods are indeed working hard to get the monster...erm...queue cleared as soon as possible. In case you haven't noticed, our numbers are a little down and the queue is falling behind. That is why we're looking to hire.

Winged Artemis - Not sure yet. As soon as we come to an agreement about who we'll pick.
Ron x Hermione - You're not a member of BA. Therefore you can't post in the BA area. However, you can post and request in Banner Request.
Wendelin the Wierd - Poetry should be featured. And A Ghost Story (http://fanfiction.mugglenet.com/viewstory.php?sid=41832) is a poem that has been featured.
fiestazvezda - Your post didn't appear because you are not Sorted and therefore your posts must be manually approved by me or another moderator. Sorting questions are in fact answered in the F.A.Q.
What is sorting and how do I get sorted?
Currently the automated sorting test is unavailable. It is being coded to interface with our new forum software. We do not have an estimate for when it will be up and running. Whining/nagging/asking when it will be ready is not helpful and will not increase the speed of the coders who are volunteering their time.
If you were sorted on the boards before May 2006 and would like to return to your former house, please send a PM to your Head of House.

MizzRonWeasley, if you are not receiving rejection emails, you need to post in the 'I didn't get a Rejection letter' Thread with the story information so that the mod who modded your story might recognize it and contact you with the reasons for rejection.
Oppungo, that's the first I've heard of the problem with not receiving emails about new PMs. You may want to consider changing the email to the Yahoo! account, just to be safe.
SnowyHedwig112, the dots that look like traffic signals next to usernames signal the users online status. The green dot is for users who are logged in and active on the boards. The yellow dot is for users who are logged in but are not currently active. The red dot is for users who are not logged in.
Lipington, the current moderators will evaluate the moderator applications. The applicants will be notified of our decisions once they have been made.
Gin_Drinka, if the head moderators have not gotten back to you, it's probably because they are busy at the moment. I'm sure they will look into your problem and let you know once they've managed to figure out how to help you.

So I'm new here - and relatively new to fanfiction. I need some advice about a story I'm writing... I have the first chapter written; it takes place at Hogwarts and has all of the teachers and such but I have my own characters (that is allowed, right?). I needed advice about when to post my story. I have the plot all written up and, like I said, the first chapter finished. But I don't know if I want to put the first chap up yet... I'm afraid I might want to change something or I won't write for a while. I do want to get reviews and such. Should I put it up now?

Once a chapter or story has been validated, if an author goes back and edits it (whether for corrections or additions), are the Mods notified? If not, and the correction/addition is substantial, should the author notified the Mods first?
Just curious ...
No to the first question -- but radical changes should be re-validated, especially if it's a sensitive subject or if the writer had trouble getting the chapter validated the first time due to mechanics issues. After all, this is about keeping the site tidy and so on. I know you didn't have that second problem ;) , but this is a post for all and sundry. Thanks for the prompt about the username.
Paisa, I'm going to hope someone reading this thread knows computers better than I do, as I have no idea what's wrong with that.
MsRHD: the Great Hall is not visible until you're Sorted, and you need to be Sorted to enter the Challenges anyway, for all practical purposes. Likewise, that's why your posts weren't showing -- until you are Sorted, your posts have to be hand-validated by a mod and your triple-posts have to be hand-deleted by a mod. That's why our drug-ad 'users' can't leave their spam all over the place in plain viewable sight.
MissBean, this would be a better question for General Fanfiction Discussion. However, my advice would be to work on chapter two while a site-experienced beta-reader works on chapter one, as it will save you stress and time in the queue, and is a good pattern for making sure your readers will always have another chapter coming eventually.

Another question... why am I not able to create a new thread?
I write it all up and click "create new thread" and it brings me to a page telling me:
"Thank you for posting! You will now be taken to your post. If the administrator has selected to moderate all posts in this forum, you will be taken back to the forum and your post will be displayed presently. If you opted to post a poll, you will now be allowed to do so."
...but it never shows up.

MissBean, all posts in the General Fanfic Discussion forum made by non-Sorted members, such as yourself, must be moderated. Therefore, your posts will not be visible until a moderator has gone through and approved the post. Once you get Sorted, your posts will be visible automatically. Until then, please refrain from posting multiple times just because you don't see your post as this then causes the moderator to delete your multiple posts.
I'm having problems logging-in, I can't be logged in even though I have the right password and all, and even if I'm logged in, I couldn't possibly be logged in always (the 'remember me' service, wouldn't work). What should I do?

Paisa, I'm going to hope someone reading this thread knows computers better than I do, as I have no idea what's wrong with that.
I've been having the same problem over the last few days when I try to log in on the main page. Sometimes I will even show on the user list as being logged in but I can not access the rest of the site. I don't know enough about computers to say what is wrong, but I have found that if I try go to an area where you must be logged in to access (ie, try to send a PM) the other log in screen comes up and I can successfully enter from there. I know this doesn't fix anything, but it may help you until someone who knows more than I comes along.
Hope this helps and I'm sorry if I wasn't supposed to post here...

In my fic there is a girl called Emilie with an accute accent on the E. When I wrote it on word I got it from the symbols box. But when it was posted on Mugglenet Fanfic her name came up as ...milie, which confused me and my readers a lot. I'm assuming this happened because I got it from the symbols box but is there any way I could get it to appear in my story? I've tried C'n'P the symbol into my story but that doesn't work either.

I've searched all over the web site, and I can't find anything on this. When I try to select "poetry" for my story category , it says that the category is locked and to select a subcategory. However, there is no poetry subcategory. What should I do?
I have a rather strange problem - when I tried to PM Jenna a fic, it wouldn't let me. Whenever I clicked 'Sumbit' or 'Preview' it just kept saying that I needed to input both sets of data, and I saw that it had deleted the contents of my PM. Is there a character count on PMs, as mine was really long - the equivelent of about 12 pages on Word. However, it let me PM her the explanation of the fact that I couldn't PM it to her and other smaller sized PMs, if that means anything.

Sorry that this is in the wrong spot but I couldn't remember where I was supposed to post it (whether here or the no rejection letter thread) but My third chapter of "One's Dream's Another's Nightmare" has been in for more than a week (I am pretty sure). I have been checking the "view chapters" thing on my Manage stories area and it's hasn't been deleted, it just says it hasn't been validated.
Would you rather I simply delete it and re-submit when the queues re-open or...? Sorry I'm such a pain, I understand there has been a lot of work for you wonderful mods.
Thanks! Oh, Merry Christmas to you all too!

When inputting letters with accents in a story, I believe you need to use the code-alt format to input them on word, rather than using the insert symbol function. For every symbol and letter on a computer, there's a numerical code that can be inputted to display these. Basically, you press down the Alt key then type the numerical code. For example, you want a capital E with an acute accent, press Alt + 0201, and your computer will substitue what you input with an É.
(This will not work on the forums, just for reference, as you can just copy-paste it, but there are times, like on MNFF when you cannot.)
For your code-alt needs, I find this page very useful and saved it to my bookmarks.
Windows Alt Key Codes (http://www.tlt.psu.edu/suggestions/international/accents/codealt.html) If my explanation's a bit fuzzy, here's a usage guide (http://www.tlt.psu.edu/suggestions/international/accents/codealt.html#using). nysuperstarz & Snape's Talon, we thank you for your vigilance and it is greatly appreciated, but this is a thread for questions. In the future, please PM a moderator. Thank you. :)
Unregistered, that may be because the queue is closed. If you visit the first page of MNFF, you'll see an announcement for that. Try resubmitting after January 1, 2007.

Hmm . . . It could be that our message system has a hidden maximum character count, though I do find it strange that it told you what it did instead of voicing the character count problem, like it does with anything less than fifty characters. It might of been a minor glitch at that point in time? Unfortunately, I don't have a straight answer, so I'm going to stick with the maximum character count for now.
babekitty_92 - Yes, this is the wrong place for your request, but to answer, if your submission has not been deleted, it is most likely still in the queue. We do moderate during the hols; we just don't accept new submissions once the queue's closed.
When your submission has been in the queue for more than six days, it is recommended that you kindly PM a mod with your penname, story title, and category so that we may check.

Do y'all have a policy for redoing and revamping fics? I have one that I am not overly pleased with and am redoing during the holiday. Would you rather that I delete the old one, or simply change the title? The new one will have a bit of the same plot, but on the whole will be a lot better.

MM, my opinion is if your story is undergoing a major rewrite, with changes to the plot, the characters, and the sequence of action, you should resubmit it. If there are just a handful of minor changes, don't worry about it. That's my opinion; I'm not aware of an actual "policy" on that.
nikkiolapotter, where did you submit your application? The BA is now officially headed by the lovely Foxy Wolf and forgotten_poems. If you sent your application to QueenHal, it needs resubmitted. If you submitted it to either of the two co-leaders, I'm sure they wouldn't mind a PM following up on your question.

For quite awhile, I've wanted to move my Gauntlet story, "To Be Or Nott To Be" from the Gauntlet section to general, but for some reason, every time I try, it says "That category is locked. Please try a sub-category." I also tried moving it to Dark/Angsty to see what would happen and got the same results, although I'm quite sure there's no sub-categories in Dark/Angsty.
Naturally, I'm quite confused. And it's not just doing this because the queue is inoperative-- I've tried on at least ten other days to change the category.
Hi guys...
I have several stories in my Favorites list ( as I'm sure most of us do :p ) and so I get e-mails whenever they are updated. My issue is that I get anywhere from 3-7 e-mail notifications for one update. While this isn't that big of a deal, it tends to clutter my inbox, and I get alot of e-mails as it is! Is there anyway to fix this?
thanks!:D
Marauder by Midnight
12-27-2006, 08:58
Siriusly Padfoot - Yes. If your story "disappears" after you've submitted, it means it has been rejected and you did not receive the letter. There are some problems, I've heard, about accepting letters with a Hotmail account or some other account. It might help to switch email providers if you still can't receive your letters.
Schmerg_The_Impaler - Even with the moderator option, I can't override the closed category. I do think it has something to do with the closed queue. Can you wait until January 2nd to try again? If you can't move it still, PM a moderator and see if she can move it for you.
Loralie - It's a nasty habit of some people to keep their stories "updated" by submitting junk chapters and deleting right afterward. It shows up as a story being updated (and thus you get your letter). Maybe politely suggest to the authors in question to stop this as it is spamming your inbox =]

Hello everyone.
I am fairly new to writing fanfiction, and I have several chapters that have been proofed and are ready to go. However I do not know how to put them into the proper format to be submitted. I understand that is HTML.
Can you direct me to a good site, or forum where I can find someone who can help me put this into the proper context? Or better yet teach me to do it myself?
Much appreciated.

Dumbledora - The Help section is a good place to check out, here (http://fanfiction.mugglenet.com/tips-formatting.php), more specifically.
HermioneWeasley1972 - Our queue is closed from December 23rd through January 2nd, as stated in our news on the first page of MNFF.
DoublePlusUngood - Actually it's stated clearly in the FAQ. Here's the quote:
What is sorting and how do I get sorted?
Currently the automated sorting test is unavailable. It is being coded to interface with our new forum software. We do not have an estimate for when it will be up and running. Whining/nagging/asking when it will be ready is not helpful and will not increase the speed of the coders who are volunteering their time.
If you were sorted on the boards before May 2006 and would like to return to your former house, please send a PM to your Head of House.

Hi!
I'm having a bit of an issue with my messages. It only lets me store 3 messages total at one time. Say I have one sent message and two received messages. This is my limit. To receive or send messages, I have to delete some of my messages. It didn't use to be like this before. :(
There was a point in time in which I didn't go to the forums for a while, and I had a few messages stored in my inbox from my beta. (Hi Hannah!) When I came back to the forums, after about a month's absence, it started saying that only 3 messages were allowed at a time. Thinking it was a glitch, I let it go on, but now it's really bugging me.
Help?

How does your story get to be under the "Featured Stories" Menu on MNFF?
Is it just, a mod randomly picks a story? Because I have seen more mod stories than regular member stories... and was wondering if it was just for Mods stories.
Does that make sense?

Hello mods and bannermakers,
I was wondering how people get chosen to be in the BA and why when I post a thread in the Beta Wanted section when I reply to it it doesn't count as a post.
Marauder by Midnight

magikdude07 - Here's (http://fanfiction.mugglenet.com/forum/showthread.php?t=24) everything you need to know about BA. PM Foxy Wolf or forgotten poems if you have any questions. Beta Wanted section is moderated, meaning posts must be manually approved before they show up. It's in the FAQs.
pheonixflame - "Finished" threads go into the graveyard or quarantine that is not viewable by usual users. Stick threads mean that the thread stays at the top of the forum no matter what. Only moderators may sticky threads.
Just Beyond the Veil - No. Our store is open still.
Lily_Roxy - FAQ is open for new questions so it won't work =] You put your image in by going to User CP then "Edit Signature." Then you place the following code in the signature:

To put an image on your Author's Page (we do not allow banners in story summaries or the story itself), you place the following HTML code:

"Your story failed to meet the required minimum or maximum word count for story submission on this site. Each chapter must be no less than 100 and no more than 10000 words long."
For coherency, my chapter (12.1k words) must be read as a whole--or at least, assuming I find a way to divide it in two, both parts must be read at the same time. Not one on a day and the second one a week or so later.
But I can't post it as a whole.
And I can't have two chapters in the queue at the same time.
Hence my question; why such a limit in the wordcount? My chapters are always over 5k words (except the early ones), and often bordering 10k words. I am constantly trying to cut bits off them so that they could fit. There are also good authors that I know of, who were considering posting their fic here and changed their mind because of the wordcount limit.
Not asking that you should change the rules. Just wondering. *shrug*
EDIT: Thanks for the answer. I'll just divide it in two then.
Actually, the archive has issues with fics that are too big.
All credit goes to WhittyLeah for pointing that out. So clever of her.

Just a quick question about the calendar function. Why doesn't it show January 2007? I've tried clicking on it, but it only shows last month. When I looked at birthdays yesterday (there was one), it showed January 1, 2007 just fine but all other days I clicked were for January 2000. Edit: Perhaps the problem is because I'm on a Mac?

HI! I don't remember this being asked before, but if it is, I'm sorry.
I submitted my application a while ago, about a month, to the BA. I have waited, and then I realized that they accepted new members. But I never got a notice saying I did make it or not.
Anyway,my Question is:
If your PM hasn't been read in a while, is it deleted? Should I send it again?
So when I thought I should send it again, I went to the thread that shows the Questions to PM and who to PM. But when I looked, thier was only what the BA was! I searched all over the BA sub-forum, but I couldn't find it.
Is it supposed to be like that? Or is something wrong with my account?
Sorry if these are stupid Questions, or I'm supposed to ask someone else.
-Gin
EDIT: I have another question. Kal told me if I want to join the SBBC again, I have to PM her becasue then she needs to talk to me or something like that. But her inbox is full! Do I just wait 'till she cleans it up?

GinnyPotter - The joining information for the BA has now been moved to it's own thread. You can find this thread in the BA forums rather than any of its subforums. Here is the link: Joining the BA (http://www.fanfiction.mugglenet.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5585)
The BA now accepts four new members each month so you need to keep applying every month if you would like to be considered. There is nothing wrong with your account.
If a member's PM inbox is full and you have no other way of contacting them (either through an email address or other means) then yes, you will have to wait for their inbox to be cleared. I'll pass on the message that you are trying to contact her.

AurorGirl101 -- I wouldn't if I were modding it and likewise any other A/N in the body of the text, song lyrics, and all that other stuff that is not your fic. In general, if a chapter is under the minimum, there's plenty of room for it to grow, and if it's over the maximum the site doesn't care what words put it over, so since the vast majority of your readers will be coming to the story once it's done, I'd say leave that note out altogether.
Celtic_Jewel, you can PM from the "Private Messages" up there in the upper right if you remember the username with all the correct spaces, underlines, etc., or use the user profile. There's also a path from User CP, in with usergroup control and other such functions.

Then, about 3 days later, someone posted a review for the story in which he asked where chapter 5 had gone, he thought it had been approved; I don't know where he got that info from.
I sent 2 emails to staff@fanfiction.mugglenet.com, but received no answer. So, I re-submitted it. Then, late yesterday, I checked the story again and, lo, chapter 5 was there. However, it is not listed in the Most Recent listing.
What's happening? BTW, I just subitted chapter 6 for validation.
Hello, mods! Just a quick question - is there anywhere on the forums where posts don't go towards your post count? Thanks.

Tate: Do not worry about your post count. It is about making helpful posts, not increasing your post count.
Post counts only increase by posting in the Hospital Wing and in certain clubs on the forum (example: The BA and SPEW).

Soggney and harryforginny:
Posts don't appear in certain forums until a moderator validates them, and in others until you are Sorted. This was how we dealt with a mass of people advertising various inappropriate things by posting ads in our lovely forums.
I'm referring the update question to an admin for further examination.
Edit for questions past, present, and future: PLEASE USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION before you type your question. We do take points from your House if something has been answered three times already, especially if one of them was on the previous page of this thread!

I noticed that the Spring Term Points thread is up! Yay! But I have a question, since I haven't been here long enough to know what happens ...
What happens to all the lovely, helpful posts made in the Hospital Wing between terms? Do they apply towards Spring Term? Or are they just ... not tallied?
I'm not scrounging for points or complaining or anything, so I hope it doesn't sound that way! I'm just curious! *see avvie* Thanks, and sorry if this was the wrong place to ask ...
~ Abigail
Edit: Well, I was just drifting off last night when I remembered that I had a couple more questions. I really could use a Remembrall! (Aren't you glad I'm editing my post instead of double-posting?) ;)
1. I've noticed that in the calendar, the year 2007 doesn't exist yet! Will that be fixed?
2. Which off-site links, exactly, aren't allowed? The FAQs say none at all, but I've seen some for LJs and some for resource-y type pages that seem to be okay ... I've tried checking through the other "Ask" pages, but I couldn't find anything ... sorry if this has been answered already!
Thanks again!

joybelle423, each individual moderator in charge of a forum can make the decision about whether or not they would like to award points for the Spring Term based on good posts made during the break. They can either count them or not.
As for the calendar question, it is being looked at.
If you go to the FAQ ~ Mugglenet Fan Fiction Beta Boards (http://fanfiction.mugglenet.com/forum/showthread.php?t=774) thread, you will see that offsite fanficion links and other inappropriate offsite links are not allowed in posts. Reference links are okay, but LJ and other, similar websites, should only appear in signatures and not in posts.

I am working on a HP fan fiction which covers a story of a new set of characters who study at Hogwartsm so the main characters won't have any involvement..
I've looked round the rules but maybe its because i read them wrong or something but this issue was clear enough.
Can you just clarify if this is okay.
Thank you.

King Kylus: It is perfectly okay to set a story at Hogwarts that does not include Harry or the others in any way (though if it does take place when they are there, you might want to at least mention them for believability).

Since the "Ask'' Thread isn't up for the Spring Term (For classes) I don't know where else to ask this. Can I sign up for two of the classes in Madame Puddifoots? Or should I pick just one? Thanks in advance!!

*goes to change header on school questions thread*
AurorGirl101: There's nothing to stop you, but you'll probably be covering similar material. The difference is the depth and workload (and, in NEWT Romance, some more challenging subject matter, such as slashfic.) Since the Romance classes have enrolment caps, and look to be very popular, I'd suggest picking just one.
Onbegrepen: The classes are, at core, a set of discussions on a topic that relates to writing fanfic (and anything else, hopefully.) In a sense, they're sequential challenges. For instance, there's usually a topic per week for discussion and at least one writing assignment. Different levels expect different amounts of work; for instance, First-Year classes have most of their material right here on the forums and tackle fairly small-scale problems. OWL level may send you to the archives to search for examples of a fanfic idea, or to the Harry Potter Lexicon to look things up, and may expect higher-quality responses to writing assignments. NEWT level will probably take you off MNFF altogether and/or make you do some serious thinking -- it's usually meant to be closer to university-level classes than the rest, though I have never found a university creative-writing class that focuses on outside topics quite the way Hogwarts does.
Mostly Hogwarts is meant to bring some new material and ideas into the writing processes. If students are learning journalistic style, or psychology, or elements of romance writing, or history, some of that will come through sooner or later in a new and remarkable piece of writing. Hogwarts is also meant as a resource for writers who need work on skills and cannot find that guidance elsewhere.

Well, I was actually thinking about joining one of the classes for the Spring Term, but I can't see even the forum. It just says, "Hogwarts Spring Term" or something or another. I just want to view it; it won't let me, it says that there is nothing there. Is there even any classes there yet to view?
Sorry, one more question. I am trying to submit my fic to the New Year's Challenge cat. It shows up when I am searching for fics on MNFF in the Contest Submissions.. but when I try and submit my own, the New Year's Challenge is not an option. What do I need to do? I would really like to submit this and get it up soon, yet I'm confused! *giggles*
Please help me, and thank you so much for all that you do on MNFF.
Thanks,
~Lindsey :)
OK, I have searched the site using the word que and didn't get an answer, I have 3 kids I cant search all day so maybe I can get some answers here.
1. Can we see the que on the site to see where we are on the list?
2. The first time I submitted my story it was rejected because I put it in 2 categories by misteak and it was deleted. I resubmitted and haven't received another notice that it was rejected or accepted. It is still on my account page and it let me add 7 chapters to it today, does that mean it was accepted?
3. I was also able to add my story to my favorites page and all 8 chapters show up. Why then if I search the authors does my name not come up nor does my story?
4. Sorry this is my first fanfic and I have actually almost finished writing it. Last question, After your story is accepted does it take just as long to validat each chapter before it is available to the public or is it faster?
Thanks,
Kristy

Ron x Hermione, you should be able to view the Classes forum. All of the classes are listed under that forum. If you cannot see that at the moment, you may want to log out and log in again to see if that helps. If not, please PM me and I'll see if I can figure out why you can't see the forum.
jmegray, I'll answer your questions in the order you have them.
1. Users cannot see the queue. Only moderators can view the queue.
2. It can take between seven and ten days for a modertor to get to your story. As this is only the eleventh day the queue has been open, the fact that you haven't heard about your chapter yet probably means a moderator hasn't gotten to it yet. Adding chapters does not mean that your original chapter has been approved. Also, if you had read the Submission Rules on the archive, you would know that you are only allowed to submit one chapter of one story to the queue at a time. All additional chapters will be removed from the queue without moderation.
3. Your name does not come up when you search through the authors because your submission has not yet been approved. Only after your submission has been approved will your username come up using the search option.
4. It takes just as long to moderate each chapter of your story.

Sorry, one more question. I edited my last post, but I was too late!
*giggles* Do I need to submit it to the Monthly Challenges?
I will log back in and out right now to see if I can fix the first problem.
EDIT: The problem is NOT fixed. I logged in and out twice, and I still cannot see it. Does this still have something to do with the email validation? Gr... I'm so sorry, thank you so much for helping me! :)

Lindsey -
Log out of the main site, then clear your cache of all temporary files. Log in again, and you should be able to submit there. When choosing, select contest submissions. Release the button, wait a moment, then click the drop down arrow again. It should then have the challenge subcategories.
As for the other issue, have you tried to join the Students usergroup? If not, try doing that and then you should be able to see it. To do that, click on User CP, and then down at the bottom left there is a link called Group Memberships. There should be a School Students group, and you need to click the button by Join this Group.

Shihtzu, as stated in the beginning of the thread, you should read the FAQ of the site first. Had you done so, you would have found the answer to your question here (http://fanfiction.mugglenet.com/forum/showpost.php?p=27205&postcount=3).

Um, I don't think this was in the FAQ, so I was wondering...
With the Ballad challenge in "Poetry Anyone" section, do you have to be a member of the group to enter or not?
Thanks!
Abbi/Grinch :)
Sorry to be such a noob, but, well, I am one.
I'm wondering what exactly the Beta Readers do. Do they just give input on the story and what they think of it, do they fix grammatical/spelling mistakes, or what? I would very much like to become a beta reader, and I'm not quite sure where to being.
I'm sure I'll discover the answers in a FAQ five minutes after I post this....
Anyway, any help would be very appreciated.

Ooh, yet another question by me.
Kay so, how come that when I try to submit a story, and try to attach a file instead of sticking the text into the box, it won't load right and says the word count is 1? It's been like this forever! Is this because it's a .wps file? If it is, then darn you, stupid Word Works Processor! (It causes much trouble, believe me)

You don't have to be a member of the group. The challenge is in that forum just for convienience's sake.
Dark Sun - this is really not the place for that kind of question. Information on beta readers and their role is avalaible all over the place, not least in the beta forums. I always use Google as a first resort if I don't know something.

You need to use HTML, so the image tag is <img src="insert image URL here">

That function doesn't work and never has. *rolls eyes at the software* You need to copy and paste into the text box.

okay, so first, i think i'm doing this wrong. i pressed the reply but i have a feeling i'm not meant to reply. was i meant to add a new thread and if so, how? Sorry, but i'm a newbie and have no idea what i'm meant to be doing.
My other question is how it is that some authors seem to know how many people have read their stories when not everyone reviews? Sorry if this has been asked before but I'm not sure how to check if it has. Thanks.

If you want to ask a question then hitting reply was the right button to press. If you're looking for help on the basics of using the forums then you should visit the Forum Usage Help Page Here (http://fanfiction.mugglenet.com/forum/faq.php?faq=vb_faq#faq_vb_board_usage).
The reason that some people can tell how many reads they have is because prior to the archive upgrade there was a feature on the Manage Stories page that told you how many people had read each chapter. However, other modlies correct me if I'm wrong, I think that feature was lost when we upgraded.

I feel reall stupid asking this but I looked up in the FAQ's and nothing came up...so here I am.
Where can I find the Challenges for my house and the boards? I'm a newbie and I'm sorry if someone has answered this-but I couldn't find it.

I'm sure that this has been asked before, but I couldn't find the answer in any FAQs so, here I am! I was wondering if MNFF accepted stories in the format of a movie/TV show script. Thanks for answering my question!
Script fics are rarely ever accepted. Only really excellent ones are accepted. It's just about a smidge away from being not allowed.
Magical Maeve
01-17-2007, 02:33
Just to expand on Eponine's reply, we also require any scriptfics to be fully formatted as a proper script, which includes full stage directions and setting descriptions. We definately do not even consider script fics which are just a list of alternating dialogue.
