Sorry Jenna,
I realise I'vealready aksed this, but I was wondering if you'd followed it up?
Are we allowed to link to either the artists personal space, or say their Myspace in a songfic?
I realise perhaps this is a silly wuestion seeing as off-site links arn't allowed... but for music? Or should we save that for our Author's page if the reader is curious?

This is more of a request than a question. One reviewer accidentally posted three identical reviews for my latest chapter. Could a mod please go and take the bottom two off? (I replied to the top one.)
Thanks so much!

Hey guys, I hope I can ask this question here, and if not, i'm extremely sorry, i don't know any better as I'm knew. As for my question, I couldn't find the answer to this anywhere on the site, but I might have over-looked it. Could someone tell be how to put a banner in my signature? I keep seeing "no hotlinking" and I don't know what it is, so I don't want to try anything in fear of doing it on accident. Thank you bunches!!!!

You may contact a moderator to do so. However, before you do that, make sure you're ready to delete for good. There's no way to get an account back afterwards (besides re-registering)

Links aren't allowed period in stories, as far as I know. So yes, please just put it on your author's page.

Hot-linking is just using the artist's picture straight from their image account. What you'll need to do is right-click the image, save, and upload to your own image account, such as Photobucket.
To put a banner in your signature, you'll need to use the code link to image (make sure you take out the spaces).

I've been a member since July or August and I still haven't been placed in my house! I took the test and got my result: Hufflepuff. I PMed both the Head of House and Prefect and still haven't gotten a reply. I really want to be placed. Am I PMing the wrong person? I know everybody's busy, but a few months is ridiculous. Please point me to the right person or place.

I tried to edit the title of my post in the Excerpts of Murtlap forum but it changes only in the post and not on the main page of the EoM forum. Are we even allowed to change the title or is it fixed once and for all?
Edit: Oops. I'm sorry! I had two threads up, and one was a question thread in Ravenclaw House.
*facepalm* I got confused.

Heyyyyyyyyyyyy! What is a "hot thread" and how can you make your thread a hot thread thanks
-Zackooooooooooo Borni
Please use proper spelling and grammar in all of your posts, as this is a writer's forum. Thank you.
To answer your question, if you click on a forum, every thread has an envelope icon on the left side. If it's red, it means that it's a so-called "hot thread". This means that it is a popular thread (i.e. many people have posted replies to that thread). In order for a thread to become a "hot thread", basically you just wait for more people to respond to it.
Not every thread will become a hot thread, as some will be locked before it hits, say, page two or something. And you can't really make your own thread a hot thread. It just happens over time to some threads.
Hope that helps. :)

Hi,
Are there going to be any more writing challenges, or will those be put off with all that's going on with the Quicksilver Quills? I know the August Challenge just ended last week, but I heard there might be something brewing for the future. And there hasn't been a One-Shot Challenge in over a month - will there be any more or have they been discontinued? No pressure, I'm just curious - thanks!

I am trying to re-submit my chapter, and the window where you put the document in, is only pasting half of it. (1305 words out of 2240) And there is no way I can just split in half, becuase the ending goes best with the half thats posting. Does anyone even understand what I'm saying?
Is there a mistake on my part or is there a glich in the system?

Hello. I'm not sure if this has already been asked or addressed, but I've noticed that my Post count doesn't go up as I continue posting. In fact, I've had 38 posts for a very long time. I've also noticed that other individual's post count stays the same, and they've also posted replies, etc. since I checked last.
Is this a glitch? Or am I just not seeing things correctly? (The latter could be true, too, :))

Two questions. The first isn't for the lovely mods, however. It's for everyone else.
Could everyone PLEASE read the FAQ before asking a question?
Now for my question for the mods: When I click WannaBeMrsRonWeasley's author page banner, I get taken to my own statistics page. Apparently she somehow put the wrong link in the banner. I asked about this a few days ago, and I was told to PM her about it. The thing is though, according to her signature, she may not be on the computer for a very long time. This isn't a huge problem for me, but I really would prefer not to have my statistics page visible to everyone. Is there anything anyone can do? Thanks in advance!

As far as I know, things haven't been put off just because of QSQ. Perhaps the other moderators are busy and don't have the time to start them just yet. They will eventually though :)

Don't worry; I'm sure it's just a glitch. We're currently compiling a list of things we need to change and I'll make sure that this is on there. Granted, it may not have the same importance as the other subjects since word count doesn't really affect the reading or the quality of a story. But we'll look into it :)

This question has been answered multiple times already in other threads and in the FAQ. Posts are not counted in many forums. But post count shouldn't matter all that much anyway.

No, it's not your stats page that shows up when authors click it. Whoever clicks it is linked to their own stats page. Want to know why?
The URL to the stats page is:
http://fanfiction.mugglenet.com/user.php?action=stats
Whenever everyone clicks it, they go to the stats page of the user that's currently logged in; usually it's themselves. So don't worry. Your stats page is not visible to everyone.

Could everyone PLEASE read the FAQ before asking a question?
I'm sorry. Please forgive me.
It wasn't the post count, per say, that I was concerned about. It was the little message that comes with the post count as count climbs. "Beset by Owls," etc.
Thank you, though, for answering my question and I will be sure to check deeper into the existing FAQs before asking any more questions.

Hello,
I just posted a new thread in the Room of Requirement, but it didn't show up. Is this forum moderated so that all new threads must be approved? And if so, would it be possible to make a list of all forums of this sort, or make a note of it in the forum itself so that posters know what to expect?
Thanks in Advance,

Godric, once your chapter gets approved, go into edit stories. Beside each chapter, there will be an up or down arrow. This is how you renumber your chapters. Simply move chapter three into it's proper place and you will be good to go.
Maia, yes the ROR is a moderated forum.

Oh, good. Thanks so much for clearing that up. What would we do without such wonderful mods to set our fears to rest?
Also, are we allowed to nominate stories/authors/betas for the QSQs if we haven't been sorted yet? I thought I read somewhere that our posts would just be moderated, but now I can't the thread where it said that.

I have two quick questions for anyone caring to listen. First of all, does MNFF accept parodies? If so, what are the limitations of this? Like, how close to the actual story can it be (can they share titles, storylines, etc)? Also, what category would these be submitted to? There is no category for parodies, so that makes me think that they would either be put into General or they are not allowed. Final question (I know I'm up to more than two): do they have to be specifically marked as a parody or just mention the title and author in a disclaimer? Thanks so much, I'm a beta and my author has done a parody of A Midsummer Night's Dream, so it would be helpful if I could get some answers before I go to the trouble of betaing the first chapter. Thanks in advance!

You may write parodies. The only limitations are that they should remain respectful and the must make sense. If they're funny parodies, they should go in Humor. Otherwise, they will go in whatever category is best. Use your judgment. They should be marked as parodies in your summary just to catch the readers' eye.
I posted a request for a banner, and two people replied. Can I accept both offers and use both banners?
Well, this method may only hurt one or both banner-makers. That is why the BA moderators usually just delete the second reply. However, if you are unsatsified with the first banner and the changes that you request from the original banner-maker cannot be met, then you should PM him/her of your intentions to switch banner-makers beforehand.

G_A_Potter, this sort of question belongs in the "Rejected for Dialogue Errors?" (http://fanfiction.mugglenet.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1181&page=2) thread. I'll answer your question, but next time, dialogue questions should be posted in that thread.

The second choice is the correct one. Petunia is asking this, so it is a question. Therefore, the question should end with a question mark.
Hope that helps.

Make sure there are at least two stories in each series. We're being a bit more strict about series because we've seen too many people abuse the option. Stories in a series should be related directly. Tying in an H/G story to a J/L stories, for example, may seem like a stretch. Stories that are all one-shots that could probably function very well as one entire story don't belong in series either.

SBBC, as far as I know, is headed by both Kal and Amanda (pandafan81). I think you can PM both of them. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
For SPEW, you can, again, contact either one of them. I've seen Mask poke about here a few times recently, and I know Anna is available :)
However, to be on the safe side, PM Fantasium and Pandafan81 and ask them first if they take requests.

Okay, I've got a problem. My fic was finally validated (YAY!) though I never got a validation email. Anyway, it's been posted under the category 'Humour.' My fic is so not Humour. I can't write humour to save my life, and its supposed to be a serious story with a message. Anyway, this wasn't just a stupid mistake on my part because i think I know what happened. When I submitted my fic I kept going back in to make sure it was perfect when I submitted it. For instance, I submitted it but when I looked at it on my page the formatting was wrong and everything. So I would delete it and start again till I got it right. Anyway, a couple of times when I went to see whether it was okay, I noticed it was under humour so i had to keep going back and changing it to Marauders Era. This happened a few times (it also happened with my first fic a few times), but then I thought I got it to stay Marauders Era, but obviously it changed to humor again. Why did it do that? Anyway, if you understand what i'm saying, I put my fic under Marauders Era and its been validated under Humour. Please do something because I really don't want to have to delete it and submit it again, because it took ages to be validated, but I can't have it under humour. It won't make anyone laugh.

If I nominate a Professor-rated fic for the QSQs, will just anyone be able to click on the link and read it? Or will only people who have checked the age-of-consent box be able to read it? If anyone would be able to read it, should I provide a link to the author's page instead of directly to the story? Am I even allowed to nominate such a fic?
Vindictus Viridian
09-20-2006, 14:17
Chrissy, if you link to a Professor-rated fic, the screening stays in place to demand the login. It won't give anyone a way around that I'm-seventeen checkbox.
Zacko, this is the sort of question that belongs in a Room of Requirement or General Fanfic Discussion thread, not an ask-the-mods thread. However, one reason would be that a writer who has perfectly good grammar, punctuation, and spelling skills may still want a canon-checker, a plot-checker, or a long-sentences checker. Another set of eyes is always a good thing, and just because something made sense to the writer doesn't mean it'll work for anyone else.
Lily, that's just plain weird. All I can suggest is that the edit page should be used as seldom as possible (it messes up the formatting anyway) and that the category should be double-checked before you leave the first part of the submission routine -- it can get dislodged with a scroll down, for instance. I'll try to keep an eye out for your things in Marauder-Era and make sure they stay there, though.

Okay, so I have two questions, here goes, I know that everyone mods general, but how do you choose who goes to mod there and when, do you have some kind of schedule or do you just go whenever you have the time or when your done with your own section?
Also, I posted A story in general (well its in queue anyways) and I put an AU warning on it, the thing is that I changed a lot of stuff so that it would fit my story and it doesnt *all* go with canon, but, my story doesnt revolve around the AU parts, its just hte story of my two, OC's going through adventures at Hogwarts, so my questions is, would that be correct to put it in the general fanfiction category? The story has a mixture of humor, romance adventure and all things in between so im pretty sure its general but I just want ot make sure!:)

nysuperstarz - Not all mods have categories (me, for example). Sweepers, who don't have specific categories, are responsible for general, dark/angst, humor, and any category that gets backed up. Category mods also poke around those areas, basically everyone just does what they can to help out. For your story, my take on AU is thus: if the AU is central to the plot (for example, Harry sorted into Slytherin) this should go in AU. Also, if the story is your version of book six, it belongs in AU. If the story doesn't take canon into consideration in a less major way, for example, Dumbledore is still alive, but plays a minor role in the story, it needs an AU warning.
I_Love_Fanfics - There is a thread in the questions forum called "I Didn't Get a Rejection Letter". Post your information in that thread, and hopefully the mod who read that story will remember it and be able to get in contact with you.

Question about those big spaces that show up when an unsuspecting author goes in to edit and only finds out a long time later that the big spaces between paragraphs show up just because she edited the chapter... (long breath after a very long sentence):p
Can I do anything to repair the situation? Can I re-submit my chapter without having to send it through the queue?
Or can I go into the chapter to edit, cut out the "big spaces" chapter, and paste in a new, fresh chapter words? It would be the same chapter, just... without those big spaces. :D

I submitted three nominations to the QSQs: one in Best Romance - Original Character, Best Romance - Non-canon, and Best Romance - Canon, each, but only the one for canon romance showed up. Have the posts in the other threads not been moderated yet, or did they just not show up, or did I do something wrong? Should I re-post, or should I just wait? Thanks in advance for the help!

I have four stories running, and I might not be able to edit either of them before a long time--possibly more than the 6 months time after which the fic is considered abandoned. The reason for that is that I'm starting my first year of medicine studies and I'll have absolutely no time to write. I'll probably have no time to sleep either, come to think of it  .
However, I don't plan to abandon my stories and I really wish they wouldn't be deleted in a "Spring Cleaning" or something of the sort, even if they haven't been updated in months. I'll try to write one or two chapters for each of them in the coming year, but it might not be even possible. After my exams, though, I intend to update all of them as frequently as possible.
So, would it be possible to keep the stories in the archive, even if I don't give any sign of life for months? Pleaaaaase?
I'll make sure to add an A/N in the summaries, in order to warn the readers of the long wait, of course.

Tinn-
We don't delete all unfinished fictions. We keep the ones on the site that are devoid of errors and are generally great examples of fan fiction.
The best thing you can do to make sure your stories remain is to edit them and make sure they're shining examples of your ability.

Er, hi!
I have a question (funnily enough ...)
I posted a thread for my OC's a few days ago, but had the thread deleted; twice, actually (it'd been a long day at school ... :( ) In my PM about it, I was told that I couldn't have more than one OC per thread. However, I have seven OC's. To me, that seems like an awful lot of threads for one person to have clogging up the forums ...
I can do the seven threads, no problem, I just don't want to push a load of other threads out of the water.
If this seems like a silly question, I'm really sorry. Just ignore me if it is! :D

A few questions went unanswered. I'll answer them here :)
Question about those big spaces that show up when an unsuspecting author goes in to edit and only finds out a long time later that the big spaces between paragraphs show up just because she edited the chapter... (long breath after a very long sentence)
Can I do anything to repair the situation? Can I re-submit my chapter without having to send it through the queue?
Or can I go into the chapter to edit, cut out the "big spaces" chapter, and paste in a new, fresh chapter words? It would be the same chapter, just... without those big spaces.
Once your chapter has been validated, you may make changes to the text without having it go back to queue.
What I recommend is having a copy of the chapter on the computer. If you notice that big spaces show up, copy-paste the chapter back into the text box. Then make whatever corrections you need to. I find that if you edit more than twice, the big spaces show up. So then, I make sure the corrections I had edited in are on the copy of the chapter on my computer and then copy-paste it in.
Yes, I'm back. I have two questions: I was wondering how you get into classes for the Fall term and how you participate, and how you can become a PI acredited beta when I get good enough with fanfiction that I think I can help people with theirs.
Thank you for listening to my many questions. Thanks in advance!
~Star~
For your first question, please go to your Group Membership and apply for the class usergroup. After you've been accepted, post in the appropriate class thread.
To become a PI accredited beta, you'll need to visit perfectimagination.co.uk and take the test.
I believe these questions are answered in the appropriate forums here; Beta Guild would tell you how to become PI accredited, for example.

The Fiction Junction, as are most of the forums available to un-Sorted members, is moderated. If you're not in a House, a moderator will have to manually approve of your post before it shows up to you or other forum members. It takes time to do this, so please be patient.

Try copying and pasting your story into the text box instead of loading it directly from Word. That function usually doesn't work for us. Please make sure to preview the chapter to make sure that all of the tags are working correctly and everything is spaced correctly as well.

No, there is no feature that tells yo uhow many reads your fic has had. The reason why you see things like, "Yay! 245667 reads!" is because they story was written when the old system was around, and there was a reader count on the old system. Don't worry about the number of reads; they aren't accurate.

This was a feature we used to have quite a while ago, but it's not available on efiction2, which is the program we use on the site at the moment. These authors probably wrote the numbers of reads while the function was still available on the site and haven't edited it since.

A question similar to this one has been asked before, but the answer doesn't seem to make sense.
When applying to participate certain groups, I understand (perhaps I am wrong...) that I just have to click the little circle next to the name (you know what I mean, I hope) and fill out that sentence on why we want to join.
I did that for the fall classes, and all that happened was that the group vanished from my User CP. Does this mean I was rejected, or is it some mistake?
If it doesn't mean I've been rejected, how do I know whether or not I have been accepted?
Thanks,

Crissy -- It would be a good idea, as the House Points are what we use for grading. I'm not sure myself if you have to be Sorted to see the forums in the School.
Wand Waver, the Study Hall is the top subforum in the Class forum.
Valentia, your user profile says you are a student now. The option would move from the Join area to the opt-out area when you've successfully joined, which probably is why it seems to have vanished.
Everybody -- if you put your questions in the Autumn Term FAQ thread in this area, I'm a lot more likely to spot them!
Edit: In fact, if you are not Sorted, the classes will not be visible to you. Make sure you've asked for the quiz (once) and submitted it (once.) Once you're through the system everything should be dandy.

I have two questions.
One: Are we allowed to post a character sheet thing in the Character form IF we've already done it the correct way? Like... can we add a character sheet to the end of our post after our paragraph about the character?
I also have a question about the PMing system. How long does it generally take to recieve PMs? I thought it only took a few minutes, but my friend told me that she sent a PM a week ago, when I only got it the day before. No big deal, but I was just wondering! :D

In my PM box, why can't I move messages from the "Sent" folder to another folder? Obviously I can't move them to the Inbox, but I created a new folder that I would like to put some of those messages in. Thanks for all the help you've been giving me!

Jenn:
As far as I know, you've always been able to add an icon to your PMs. I'm not sure why you couldn't do it before.
lily_evans:
You may want to ask the moderator for the character forum about your first question. As for your second question, as far as I know it only takes a few minutes. However, if the system is the same as the old forums, if your friend deleted it from their sent folder before you read it, you would never have gotten it.
Chrissy:
When you want to move a PM to a new folder, highlight the message, the scroll down and make sure the drop-down box says 'Move to Folder.' Click go and it will ask you to select a folder. Once you have, click move messages. If this doesn't work, PM me and I'll see if I can help you.
Zacko:
The gist of the post is that only PI accredited betas can use the PI banners. You can't have one that says, "I'm 75% PI beta." Basically, if you're not in PI don't use the banner.
AurorGirl:
The coloured tabs next to everyone's names indicate your online status. When it's green, you're online. Red=offline and as far as I know, yellow means online but appearing as offline. Don't quote me on that one, though.
Edit by Asphyxiated: Orange means invisible. So it will always be orange whether the person is online or offline.

Two problems, and I mention them both because they may be related for all I know.
First one is that I've been having tremendous trouble getting on to this site. It seems slightly easier in the morning, but gets worse as the day goes on and at some point just stops. I have dumped cookies and temporary files and this seems to make no difference. I have called my ISP and they say it is not them. Is there anything else I can do?
Second, someone else in my family wants an account and we went and registered him, including putting in his e-mail account, and it said we would get a confirmation e-mail but we haven't. When we try to sign him in, he gets in but can't see the whole forum - just Hermione's corner and one other thing, I forget what it was. I don't know if we made some mistake in inputting his e-mail address or something, and I don't know how/where to go to fix this.
I think I might need someone to pm me about this. Which pm I would then answer as soon as I could access the site....
(My head is spinning, my head is spinning....)
If this is the wrong place to ask, just let me know what the correct one is - I am just flat-out stumped.
Thanks!!!

Hi, I have two unrelated questions.
I was using an old computer for a while and every time I signed on to this site it said something about "DST Settings Updated". I was just wondering what that was and why it updated every time.
My other question is more important: can we use spells that were invented for the movies in our fanfictions? Or is that an automatic rejection? Sorry if that's a dumb question, but I just want to be sure!
Thanks!

I have a question about the AU warning. In the story that I'm working on now I ignored the timeline about the last time Sirius saw Bellatrix before they were both in Azkaban, and the "Snape doesn't have a daughter" statement made on J.K.'s site. Is this important enough to include and AU warning?
ByMerlinsBeard
09-29-2006, 21:19
Gmarian:
I'm almost sure that DST means Daylight Savings Time. From this point on, I'm guessing, but I think I'm right. (I usually do.) Your settings are probably set to automatically detect whether or not you are affected by DST. So, my guess is that the forums were checking your computer's clock.
I doubt anyone would automatically reject your fic for using a spell from the movies. If there's a similar spell in the books, use that instead. Really, just make sure that you're doing your best to follow the canon (meaning the books, not the movies). If you're worried about it, you could always make up your own spell, or you could omit the spell from the story altogether and just, through the narrative, tell what the character did magically without stating the specific incantation. (For example, instead of using "Lumos!" in your story, you could say "Harry lit his wand.")
Sly Severus:
Anytime you knowingly change something significant in the canon, you should use the AU warning. The question is whether or not the change is significant enough to greatly affect the plot, in which case it might belong in the AU category. If the story centers around Snape's daughter, I'd say the fic belongs in the AU category. If Snape's daughter is a fairly minor part of the story, a warning should be enough.

From my computer, I can't see my nice banner that AstridSkywalker made for me. (Snif) I did see it once, right after my computer got fixed or something, but evidently it's either unfixed now, or my nice banner has disapperared again. It's still in my signature.
Is it visible to everybody on the site, and it's just me? (snif, snif... sob... I can't even see my pretty banner...) Do I need to do something? I had a trojan horse virus on my computer that showed up who-knows-when, and that my antivirus program found last night and eliminated. Could that be it? Virus is gone now, but the banner is still invisible. My link isn't available, either, which would make it a little hard for people to get to my story.
Waiting for enlightenment from some techie-type person! :p
MyOwnMuggle: I don't have a date for you, but when they are announced the move should happen right away.
Spottedcat: I see your banner just fine. Go to the user Control Panel. Click options. Scroll down until you see check boxes for view signatures, avatars, and pictures. Click them all if you want to see them. IF this doesn't solve your problem, feel free to PM me and I'll keep trying to help.

If I want to submit a one-shot with 799 words, will it automatically be rejected for not having enough words? Actually, my fic has about 791 words, but it hasn't been beta'd yet. Automatic rejection, or is it possible that it would be validated if it's well developed? I'll try to make it longer, but I'm not sure if I can without ruining the story.
Our chapter minimum is 800 words. Less is an instant rejection. An 850 word chapter that lacked proper development could be rejected for that reason alone. As a general rule, 1000 words is what we encourage everyone to shoot for.

I did an extensive re-working of a chapter in one of my fics. I have 94 people who have listed the fic as one of their favorites . The next chapter I post is going to have a HUGE missing piece if people don't go back and read the new ending. Is hotlinking forbidden on MNFF forums, or is it just frowned upon? I am not able to get a photobucket account, and I love banners. Is there a way around this, without having to spend money or give up banners?
Fawkes - When you post the next chapter, post an Author's Note informing your readers of the additional material.
nysuperstarz - Yes your post counts are going to jump around as threads are moved about.
AurorGirl101 - Do NOT hotlink. Hotlinking eats banner maker's bandwidth. You should locate a free web host for your graphics. Photobucket is not the only one out there.

The story she is in is only a one-shot, but you would still have to read it to fully understand the poem. It doesn't tell a story, it's more just a description of her feelings. Am I allowed to submit it, or do poems have to relate to canon?

Poems generally have to be Harry Potter related, although not necessarily canonical.
However, if you have a story up that relates to Harry Potter, and the poem directly relates to thet story, then you may submit the poem for consideration. I'm not saying it will definately be validated, and you must include an A/N explaining how the poem connects to the world of Harry Potter via your OC and the one-shot.
but how do I get to post a question in a different forum? I'm just looking for a certain fic and I am unable to post a new thread and I am logged in. Is it possible for me to reply to a post there and ask? I just have one question lol.

HELP. For the 2nd time, I've gotten an email alerting me to an update to a story I have as a favorite. When I click on the link, it tells me that the story hasn't been released by the admin.
Then, about a day or two later, I get another email that the story has been updated and this time it works.
I'm wondering if I'm unique and somehow getting notices when a favorite story is submitted to the que and then another when it's released - or is this a system glitch?
It's frustrating because I think I have something to read - then NOTHING.
Who do I need to ask about this?
Thanks.:(

I'm not sure what you mean, but there are some forums that might not allow you to post. And since you're not Sorted, your posts must be manually approved by a moderator in order to show up for you and other forum members. Please be patient and allow moderators time to review your post.

It might just be a glitch. Another moderator can correct me on this since I'm not 100% certain.

Hello, I was just wondering how editing a story affects the validation process. I know that if you edit a chapter of the story while said chapter is in the queue, it moves the chapter back to the bottom as if you've only just submitted it. But how does editing previously validated chapters of a story affect the position of a following chapter from that story if it is still in the queue? For example, chapter 10 is in the queue and I go in and edit chapter 3; will chapter 10 remain where it was in the order, or will it be bumped to the bottom because I have edited a part of the story it belongs to?
I hope that makes sense, and thanks.
edit: Thanks, VV. If it is dated 9/28, then apparently it doesn't get bumped when editing other chapters of the story, as that is when I submitted and I have edited one as recently as 10/02. So I can continue to fiddle with my story when chapters are in queue. This is good to know.

Well, your chapter is in the queue dated 9-28 and I'll get to it momentarily. Hopefully, knowing that, since you know when you edited the earlier chapter, will answer the question for you! It looks not to have been bumped down, though. We'll just see about those pesky line breaks, and whether they were added by the Dark Lord in his meddlings with our site.
For the October challenge, it says you must contact the author of the fic you are using, to ask their permission. I looked up the author of the fic I want to do, and clicked contact and then typed in my message. I then realised I had no idea what it did or how the author would reply. So, basically, that's my question. What happens when you 'contact the author' and can they reply? If so, how? and how do you receive it?

Catrin:
When you contact an author, it sends that author an e-mail to the address they used to sign up with Mugglenet. When you fill out the contact an author form, it asks you to supply an e-mail address. This is so that the author can respond to you; he or she will simply e-mail you back.

Hi. How do you make a link so that it has different words that the actual website, because I tried it and it's not working.
PS- How do I post a poll in my thread?

The last few times I tried to get to the forums (here, in otherwords) from the MNFF site (you know, the main one that you get that shows Helga Hufflepuff when you first bring it up... not the main Mugglenet site, but the MNFF site) I couldn't get to the forums.
I got one of those white pages that tells me I can't get there.
So I have to go into my email, hope I haven't gotten rid of all my emails from here, go into one of them, and thus arrive here in the forums.
Am puzzled as to whether or not I ought to try getting in from the main Mugglenet site, as my computer picked up a nasty-tempered virus somewhere and someone who knows more about online stuff than I do thought I might have gotten it from the main Mugglenet site. (gasps for breath.) (Ducks any possible wet dishcloths or half-pieces of stale toast that might be coming her direction)
Any idea why? (Not being able to get in the forums, that is--not the wet dishcloth and the stale toast.)
(goes to sniff at stale toast to see if butter is still good) :p

I'm actually in the process of validating that right now. [I just happen to be multitasking and saw your post here at the exact same time XD]. Sorry, but I'm the Hr/SS mod, and I just got back from my break -- while I was away, other mods were covering my categories, but they did have their own categories to worry about, so it's understandable that it fell a bit behind.

I accidently pressed "Add Response" to a review for my story "A Duel With the Mind" twice. How do I remove one of my responses?

Now things are weird. I responded to another review and only pressed Add Review once, but there are two. I went back to my first review and I now have three responses.
Is this a bug?

I don't know if this counts as a quesion to post here but I have to blurt it out:
What is a Mary Sue?
Hi,
When the mods read a chaptered story, do they try to keep an eye out for all the chapters? Or does one mod do one chapter, and another mod might pick up the next one, etc?
If we wanted one mod to follow the chapters, since they will have some idea of how they fit together, where do we put that request in the submission? Will it be taken out so readers don't see it, or do we have to go in and edit? *dreads the extra <br> tags* Could we PM the mod? Or just not worry about it? :D
Confusing, I know - sorry and thanks!
Also - when we are submitting a chaptered story, how come a title page doesn't pop up for the first chapter? It just goes right to the story. I didn't include the chapter title in the actual text of the story so there was no way of knowing what it was called. I'm just curious about that little quirk.
Thanks again!
~Gina :)
I was just wondering if there was anyway to move PMs out of the 'sent items' folder. I was just trying to organise all my PMs and discovered that there is not a 'move to folder..' option in that folder. Is this supposed to happen or not?

I need to be led to a link/thread that states a description of the ratings on MNFF.
I searched but was not able to find one - but please take in mind that my research skills are, for lack of a better word, horrific.
I'm trying to keep my current fic under 3rd -5th years.
Thanks

Hi,
When you edit your story after already uploading it to the queue, does it prolong your wait?
Thanks:D
FuzzyMuffins - PM me your unsername on the site and I'll try to help, but i'm not certain that I can.
Ginny Potter - I reccomend you stop by the character help forum. Mary Sue has been discussed there.
Gina - If you want to specify your mod, you are allowed. You need to place and Author's not in the TEXT of your chapter. Do NOT place the AN in the AN bubble. Such request may increase your wait time in queue.
Catrin - Sorry, option not available.
mugglemathdork - http://fanfiction.mugglenet.com/tips-warnings.html
BleedINink - No, but it can significantly ruin your formatting. Try to submit chapters as clean as possible and avoid editing in queue. Rejection for formatting can be frustrating.
I know that MNFF allows you to have two chapters in the queue at the same time as long as they're for two different stories that are in two different categories. Does this mean two different BIG categories, or two different subcategories? For example, can an author have two chapters in the queue if both stories are Romance, but one is, say, Harry/Ginny and the other is Ron/Hermione? Or do they have to be completely different categories, such as one in Romance and one in General?

You can have one in Harry/Ginny and one in Ron/Hermione. Two categories means two actual categories, not big categories such as D/A or General.

I don't know if I should ask this here, but are we allowed to mix books? Like, take a character from another book series, plunk him/her in HP Fandom, and see what happens? If you don't understand I'll gladly explain more.

Nope, sorry. That would be considered a crossover, and those aren't permitted on MNFF.

Um, I'd just like to mention (in regards to crossovers) that a while back I found a story that had a LotR charcter in it. I can't remember the name of the story (I have a terrible memory) but I do know that it was in the Humor category. (Are there sometimes exceptions for Humor?) Just thought I'd point that out.

10-19-2006, 14:46
No, there aren't exceptions for the Humor category. If the name of the story comes to you, that would really help us find it. Until then, we'll keep our eyes peeled. Thanks for the heads up!

I'm sorry if this shouldn't go here, but I just posted in the Skele-Gro Plot Potion category. But my post didn't show up. In this because a mod has to read my message first before allowing it to be posted? I saw a message pop up when I clicked post message, but it went away to fast to see what it said.
Sorry if I'm bothering you with the question, it's probably somewhere on the forum.

Like Potterphile12 said, please use correct spelling and avoid netspeak.
There are several stories that don't add up all the words. We're preparing to look into that as soon as our coders have the time. Meanwhile, you can edit your summary with a little note telling readers to disregard the word count.

Yes it's just for the reason you said. A mod has to approve of your post before it shows up to anyone because there have been so many cases of spam.

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this question, sorry if it is not.

Um, help!!!!!!
I just went and logged onto my account on FanFiction (which is unusual as my computer leaves me logged in) but when I went to check my reviews, it went to the "Log in" area. So I logged in again, ticking the "remember me" box, and it did it again! I went to check my favourites, and everything, but nothing worked, it kept happening!
Can you help me at all? Someone????
EDIT: Hi, I just figured out what went wrong, but I'll just make sure. Thanks anyway, and this can be deleted.

WoodsBride: Banners are not allowed in stories or summaries on MNFF. You may have a story banner in your author profile or in your signature here on the forums.
Babekitty: Try clearing your cookies; this sometimes works. If you use AOL or Safari, they can sometimes cause logging in issues and you might want to try IE.

It seems that whenever I do a system restore on my computer, my passwords and settings for sites I have saved my password on stop saving it for a while and I have to do it all again.
The last time I did this, the password for my MNFF account didn't work, and I sent an email for a new one. It never came, so a kind mod gave me a new one.
*facepalm* I've done it again.
Q1: Anyone know why this happens?
Q2: Can someone give me a new password? I'll get a new email adress for MNFF alone, because hotmail must be dodgy.

I don't know whether or not to change the rating of my humour fic, "The Dark Lord's Blog," to 3rd-5th years.
Although there is no direct violence, and there is absolutely no foul language of any kind (except for the word 'blast,') it is, after all, Voldemort's blog, and he makes many casual references to murder and other evil deeds. (Like puppy-stomping as a stress reliever, or the Annual October Muggle Mass-Murdering Spree and Barbeque). I would normally never write anything that would be considered inappropriate, but this IS Voldemort's blog, after all. Do you think I should change the rating to 3rd-5th years when I submit the next chapter, just to be safe?

Please forgive my density. I'm confused and feeling really stupid. I read this earlier and got really flummoxed:

Please clairify this for me as I think I mistakenly broke a rule.
If I have a Gen. Fics. story going I can also have a Humor or Dark Angsty, but not another Gen. Fics? Or otherwise, what do you mean by category?
Sorry but I read the earlier answer and my brain just went TILT!

BleedinInk - You need to be sorted to post more freely in most forums. Joining SPEW involves being active on these boards in a positive way and then submitting an application following the guidlines outlined publically in the SPEW forum.
GAPotter - You may submit only one chapter of a given story at a time. (Wait for this chapter to be validated before submitting the next chapter.) You may submit up to two chapters (of two separate stories) at a time, but only if these submissions are in different categories.
