Do you have a question that wasn't covered in the guide? Is your question about the forums that other members might know the answer to? This is the place to ask. In this thread, only Navy members may answer questions.

Like the Ask a Moderator threads, spam in this thread will be deleted. This includes questions that have already been asked and answered, and off-topic comments and/or conversation.

Do not complain that you can't read through every page. There's a handy-dandy feauture right at the top of the thread that says Search this Thread. Put it to good use.

*side note*

This is the third thread of this kind. It would do you well to read through the others or at least search the others before posting here.

Thanks.

Hello! I've got a stupid question!
I want to put my banners into my author page on MNFF, and I went to the "Manage Images" thing and uploaded my images successfully. But then when I go back to "Manage Images" it tells me there are no results found. Any help?
Thanks!
Mapoi

EDIT: Okay, thanks! I just wanted to make sure it wasn't just me and that I wasn't doing something wrong! I'm glad my question wasn't stupid :).

Mapoi - The Manage Images option still isn't completely flawless. The Mods are still working on it. I recommend that you just sit tight and wait while the lovely Mods iron out all of the problems. :) It shouldn't be too far away. And your question wasn't stupid!

Could someone tell me how to link single post into another post? I can link threads, but I can never manage single posts!

Any help at all would be really useful.

HJ- You see that number right at the top of your post, in the right hand corner? It's in that horizontal bar where the date the post was made is stated. In this thread it's #4 for you post, #5 for my post. Just click on that. The individual post will then be displayed in another window, and you can copy and paste the URL.

I hope that makes sense. I'm not sure if it does.

EDIT: Well, it seems that you've already got your answer, but I'll leave this post for future reference. :p

That was my fault, entirely... sorry.

The Check-In Desk was so overrun with the porn problem (which come up as moderated posts which have to be manually approved like these ones) that I missed this one.

Forgive me? :o

When I look at the forum directory there are symbols beside each forum showing a quill in an ink bottle. According to the guide at the bottom of the directory the ones with a lightning bolt through are closed to posting, yet people seem to be posting in them. Is it only closed to posting if you are not yet sorted? If so, might that not be mentioned in the guide?

*anxiously awaiting admittance by HoH so I can figure out what most of these threads are talking about*

NikkiSue

Nundu: More likely than not, it's because you have not been sorted yet. If you're still seeing it once you are placed in a House, let a mod know.

~Nicole

Azhure
11-01-2008, 01:09
Nundu: It could also be because you aren't in some of the usergroups, such as SPEW and Susan Bones' Book Club. Once you're sorted, you can join them if you like, but remember to read the guidlines in each individual forum first. :)

They're just extra things you can do in these forums. Although, I'm not a member of SPEW or SBBC...

Nundu: More likely than not, it's because you have not been sorted yet. If you're still seeing it once you are placed in a House, let a mod know.I thought that too, but one of the catagories is 'Questions', in which I have posted!

HermionesTwin_FromOz
11-02-2008, 02:47
Nundu: I think what it is is that it shows you can't post because you aren't sorted -- BUT -- I think it might show this because when you post in a forum like 'Questions', your post has to be moderated; you can post, it just won't show up immediately.

The other forums I can see that are closed for posting are, like Azhure said, usergroups I don't belong to and also foums which I believe can only be posted in by mods (i.e. 'Announcements' and 'House Points').

I hope that cleasr everything up. :)

The sayings below your name changes as the post counts rise. There isn't a way to alter them except for posting where it counts so the phrase changes. I heard they had something to do with chapter titles but it wouldn't explain other odd ones I have seen.

First save the banner on to your PC (right click on it from the bannermakers thread and click save as) then go to an image hosting site such as photobucket.com or imageshack.us and then upload the file from your PC. Once it's finished uploading it will give you various links to get to the image. Copy the one which has [img] tags around it, then log on to MNFF beta boards, go to edit signature (it's under quick links at the top of the screen). Then copy the link in to the box that appears and click save.

Hope that all makes sense - feel free to PM/repost if you need any more help

The option to edit signatures is only available for those who have been sorted into their house. We had to change it because of a terrible spam issue we had been dealing with here on the Navy forums for quite some time.

If you have not filled out a sorting quiz, feel free to request one from SortingHat. If you are waiting for the results, please be patient. We've had a bit of a shuffle as fas as modly jobs and so schedules may be a bit off. :-)

A drabble can be submitted to the archive site if it is over 800 words. Simply follow the submission guidelines and you shouldn't have a problem.

Please, though . . . Click "Preview" before you click "Submit." Otherwise half the time your spacing get s all screwed up!

Good luck!

Yes, you need to be sorted before you can post a beta thread. Please PM SortingHat for the sorting quiz.

Please also make sure you follow the guidelines for posting a thread in the beta forum.

Hates to correct her HoH but...

The Black Lake forum is still password protected from the riddle that was used to gain entry when it first opened. I believe it's OK to give you the password now, which is MerMuggle. If you enter that when prompted you will be able to see audiofiction updates and recommend stories to be read by the MerMuggles.

(the MerMuggles themselves do have their own subforum which is not visible)

babekitty_92
02-12-2009, 01:03
HowlinWolf, you need to send a PM to SortingHat and you will be sent the quiz shortly.

Once you've been sorted you cannot be changed unless you can convince the Head of your House to do so (and in my history of being here it hasn't been done).

Also, being in a house such as Slytherin or Hufflepuff isn't a bad thing. I was horrified when I was sorted into Slytherin but it honestly is great - they're a great bunch and the Puffs? Well, they're all just puffs of sunshine. :p

I'm looking for a place to ask questions about mecahnics of writing fanfiction. For example, where could I ask about proper nouns of the wizarding world? I know one of these nouns is Muggle, but I need to find out more. Where could i find that out?

Sorry if that's a very convoluted question! Thanks.

Phia Phoenix
04-02-2009, 07:50
Hi Salmantino! No, that's a perfectly fine question; there's no specific place for what you're asking for but I'd suggest heading over to the Gryffindor Tower (right here in the Great Hall (http://fanfiction.mugglenet.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=27)) and asking any questions you may have in the thread that is reserved for asking questions. ;) (I'm just assuming there's one such thread in the Gryff Tower - I'm not a Gryffindor, so I can't check. If there isn't one, feel free to PM members of the Navy to ask us any questions like that - we're always happy to help!)

As to that particular question - basically, any term invented by J.K Rowling has to have a capital letter. Yes, this includes Muggles, but also Squibs, Chasers, Nifflers, Dementors, Snitches... you get the point. Words like "ghosts", however, do not get capital letters, because Rowling didn't make them up. Make sense? :)

Good luck!

Salmantino, A place where you can ask questions pertaining to the books and canon is the Reference Desk. (http://fanfiction.mugglenet.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=15) You can go and make a new thread there, asking your question. :)

So I'm a bit confused... well I guess that is obvious as I am new and posting in this thread.
Anyhow, so I read that for the Sorting Quiz I have to PM SortingHat. Then, I saw somewhere else (I am blanking on the location) that I should PM Harry Potter.
Theeeennn, I read that I should PM songbook99. That was in either the first or second "Ask The Navy" thread.
I PM'd SortingHat yesterday, since I didn't get a response I figured maybe I would give songbook99 a shot.
I just did.
I just want to make sure I am going about this write. I have a feeling I am making it more complicated than it is. I have a tendency to do that.
And how long does it typically take for the SortingHat to get the quiz back to you?
I don't mean to be impatient, I just am super eager to get started in the forums.

NikkiSue
04-12-2009, 23:05
Sorry guys for answering this in your forum but I have a reason, hehe . . . :o

Lillirot:

I sent the sorting quiz to you (maybe) ten minutes ago. You will probably read (and reply) before you see the update for this forum.

Just to be clear, the correct place to send a quiz request is the Sorting Hat account. It is an account run by the mods as a collective whole so it is constantly being supervised.

songbook_99 is no longer a mod and the other one is not an option either.

Sorry for the confusion!

It is easy. FAQ coding (http://fanfiction.mugglenet.com/forum/misc.php?do=bbcode). Just click on that link. About half way down the page is the instructions. There is also instructions there to place a link within a banner.

You can access information such as this by click on the FAQ link next to the user cp link.

I had a quick question about submitting stories into their respective categories....

I already have a chapter of my historical fic in the queue. I'm nearly finished with something that probably belongs in the "general" category. Now, this is where stuff gets confusing. Since historical is technically a sub-category of general (and I know you can't have two stories from the same category in the queue at once), do I need to wait until my historical chapter is posted or can both stories be in the queue at the same time?

I hope that makes sense to someone!

Hi, Racing Co. In 'Ask a Moderator Number 17' here is a similar q/a:

I have seen in a previous "Ask the Mods" thread that it is permissible to have two stories in the queue at once that are in different subcategories of the same category. Does this also apply to having one story in the main category, and another in a subcategory? (E.g., is it permissible to submit a story in "General" and another one in "Historical"?)

Inverarity - Yes, it is fine to submit two different stories to different subcategories at the same time.

I hope that answers your question. xx

TJ Neill, you should send a PM (private message) to the user called SortingHat. (http://www.fanfiction.mugglenet.com/forum/member.php?u=37597) You will get a reply with a few questions. Once you answer the questions and reply, based on the answers, you'll be sorted into one of the houses.

Actually . . .

You (Tine) were sorted before we got hit by all the spambots in various forums. Once *they* arrived, we changed things so you couldn't get a signature until after being sorted because offensive and lewd things were being advertised in signatures. It helped the mods out greatly and kind of sorts the true HP people from the phonies.

Hi,

Only a moderator can close a thread, which is why you wouldn't find that info in the FAQs. If you need a thread closed for some reason--one of the only situations I can imagine is if you were a beta and have now decided to stop, and want your thread closed-- you can contact a mod; generally the mod in charge of the section would be the best (you can find their name(s) in the lower right hand corner of each thread section).

Hi Hayden,

A siggy is the signature below the line in a post. It usually contains phrases, links and banners. There is a thread here (http://www.fanfiction.mugglenet.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6505) that explains how large your signature can be and how to go about putting certain things into it in post #5.

There isn't usually a time period for when you're placed into the House usergroup, but I believe that a lot of the Mods have been busy because of exams or whatnot recently, so it may be taking a day or two for them to get around to doing so. I would wait a couple days and see if you're placed into the usergroup, if not, you can send them a PM and ask them about it, and I'm sure they'll be glad to help you out.

And welcome to Hufflepuff, by the way. :)

jadoreluna: A beta looks over author's work, checking for spelling and grammar, plot inconsistencies, etc. They proof read the work before it's submitted to the MNFF archives, to help authors get validated. :)

LuckyRatTail: Yep, sure is! :) The Adoption Center (http://fanfiction.mugglenet.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=199) seems to be the place you're looking for. It's where authors offer their plot bunnies to other people to write, if they don't have the time, or whatever, to do it themselves. Remember to read the rules (http://fanfiction.mugglenet.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11088) but they're easy enough to follow. :)

Hayden: I think [correct me if I'm wrong anyone :/] the only way you can get your thread moved/deleted is to contact the forum moderator. Terri/mudbloodproud (http://fanfiction.mugglenet.com/forum/member.php?u=15892) is the moderator of the Reference Desk, so I suppose you could send her a polite PM asking her if she can sort it out for you. :)

Hope that helps, guys!

the_half_blood_prince - You are able to write smaller stories on this part of the Mugglenet website. Those are called drabbles. Some challenges even ask for a chapter but for the most part, anything larger requires a submission to the archive site. The address for that one is http://fanfiction.mugglenet.com .

The beta forum is the place for writers to cohabitate, collaborate, improve their skills and participate in writing challenges as well. (not to mention we are a fabulous bunch of people to know . . .)

I hope that helped.

Hayden - If Terri doesn't reply to your PM regarding your post being in the wrong place, shoot me a message with the specifics and I can take care of it. She's got a lot on her plate right now.

Dear Mods,

I've only just updated my signature and I want to link it to my story on the archives. So can someone tell me how to do that. I mean that when someone clicks on my siggie, he/she would be directed to my story.

This isn't the place to ask mods questions, but i can answer yours.

To make a link from your signature banner, go into edit signature. Highlight the image code, and then press the button that looks like an earth. Then put the link to your story in the box that appears. Save your signature.

Let me know if you have any more questions!

Hey there,

I was wondering how long it usually takes for the SortingHat to reply with the quizz, I PM'ed three days ago and havent recieved a reply yet, is this normal?

Thanks

Sapphire at Dawn: Yes, that is normal. Please be patient. It usually takes time because the Mods are extremely busy people. But don't worry. You will get sorted. :D

It's been years since I visited mugglenet so I was thrilled when I saw the new beta boards.:)
I was also thrilled when I saw that people can adopt or put up a story for adoption but I can't find that section anywhere. And here I am trying to sort out these story ideas that's been living inside my head for months! I desperately want them to see in writing and since I have this quirk of losing my patience, cool and interest for a novela story, I want others to write it for me. It's all so cool too... my readers and whoever I told to says so.

Also, how can I get sorted? Is the sorting in this site or in any sub-mugglenet site?

Thanks!

The adoption forum . . . I will edit back with the answer. I saw it recently, I just have to fiddle around til it appears again. :-)

I have a question, and I'm thinking and hoping that this is the place to ask. I PM'd the SortingHat and filled out the quiz. I did recieve an answer that I was sorted into Ravenclaw, this was about a week ago. So, although the SortingHat told me I was sorted, I haven't been able to access the Common Room or anything like that. Is there something I was supposed to do, or is the Head of House just overrun with new 'Claws? Either is fine, I just wanted to explore the new forums that come with being Sorted.

Thanks.

 So im nearly finished writing my first fan fic. And I was wondering what to do when i'm finished with it...

Do I post it on mugglenet?
Why do people keep talking about a waiting list?
And if your on the waiting list do you post your whole story or just your first chapter?
 lilbells

Mod Edit: Moved this post to here, as think the Navy are better suited to answering it

jecleaver2
10-16-2009, 09:58
AccioDiadem: You have to wait for the HoH to accept you as a 'Claw, but our HoH is really busy she's been on hiatus fir awhile now. I talk to the Prefect all the time so I can see what she can do. But when you encounter problems like this you just PM the HoH or the Prefect. You did the right thing though you should wait a week.

lilbells: You post it at http://fanfiction.mugglenet.com in your profile on there.

The waiting list (or more commonly known as the Queue) is where you wait for the mods to accept or deny your story. They will only deny if there are a lot of errors, but it's better to be safe than sorry, and you talk to anyone on here about this subject and they will all suggest you find a beta for your story.

Everyone is on the waiting list when you submit a story, but if you want your stories to be in chapters you put it in one whole story in diffrent chapters. I personally only have a one-shot so I don't know how that works.

I hope that helped and if I missed anything other members of the Navy will come in behind me.

lilbells, James is right, but I just wanted to add in that after you first finish your story, you should send it off to a beta to have them look it over. By using a beta, you're minimizing your chances of your story being rejected for too many errors, grammatical problems, briticisms, and things like that.

You can find information about what a beta is and how to post in that forum here (http://fanfiction.mugglenet.com/forum/announcement.php?f=10), and you can request a beta here (http://fanfiction.mugglenet.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=10). Or, if you prefer, you can request a PI Accredited Beta here (http://fanfiction.mugglenet.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=11).

I would like to add, from a mod standpoint, please closely read the submission guidelines. You may only submit one chapter at a time to the queue.

The wait time on having a chapter validated depends on the category, {some categories are more popular than others} and the mod who handles that category schedule.

Contacting a beta on these forums is always a good idea. An extra set of eyes is always a plus.

If your story is in the queue for more than 10 days, feel free to visit the staff page on the archives and find the mod for the category you submitted your chapter into. You can email them and ask them about your chapter.

One other thing, please make sure you only submit your chapter into one category. Also note, Romance is not a submittable category. You will need to choose a subcategory under Romance in which to submit a romance story.

If you have any questions that are not answered by the submission guidelines, feel free to PM me directly.

In a story if someone calls someone a Mudblood should we put a mild language warning on the story? I know someone who got offended when someone said Mudblood (really, it did happen) so I'm not sure.

I'm sorry if I should have put this in the ask a mod thread.

whomovedmyquil

ron lover: A mild language isn't necessary for the word 'Mudblood.' While it may have offended the individual you encountered, I think its safe to say that the average person would not find the term offensive.

Hi,
I'm a new member; I registered a little over 24 hours ago. I'm a bit confused as to how to maneuver the boards. Whenever I go to post a new thread, or comment/reply on other threads, I always get this pop-up message, telling me that I am not allowed. Sometimes it says that my account hasn't been fully activated yet. What does this mean, and what should I do about it? Also, where do I go to log in to the site? Does each part of Mugglenet have their own membership registration?

Hi, FoxPoint327! Welcome to the boards!

Since registering to the boards have you logged in to your email and clicked the link in the MuggleNet message you will have received? If not, do that now and follow the instructions to activate your account. When that is done you will be able to post, although as you are not sorted your messages may take a while to show up. To be sorted, send a PM to SortingHat.

Before you're sorted, you can't get to all the parts of the site. Once you're sorted though, you can look at all the forums, and post in all the public ones. Some forums require you to be part of a usergroup to post, though. E.g. SPEW.

I hope that helps! :)

When you look at my profile, you can see it and I can see it at the bottom of my posts, but another fellow Ravenclaw said that no one else can. You can post in question threads in response to a post there or if you have a question, post a new thread in the main area of the forum.

As you know, our mods can be incredibly busy at times, and they're not always on. Just wait a little bit, and remember to check your profile-- you don't get notified if you've been let in or not.
If you have any other questions, I'll be glad to help you. :)

Custom Avatar
If you have a custom avatar and want to keep it as it is, leave the fields below as they are.
Use Custom Avatar
You may upload a new custom image using the controls below. Either enter the URL to the image you wish to use, or use the upload control to upload an image directly from your own computer.
Enter Avatar URL:

Upload an Avatar From Your Computer:

Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 100 by 100 pixels or 19.5 KB (whichever is smaller).

If you are using the URL option to put on a new avvie then you might try saving the avvie directly to your computer and then uploading from there.

I always upload from my computer so there isn't a problem with opening the website. Just make sure the avvie is the correct size and isn't animated. You won't be able to use those.

Hope that helps.

Hi -

I'm wondering if we have anymore of those threads where we can request about some specific sort of story we'd like to read, and then other members give recommedations based on stories they have read. I might not be the best person to answer this, but I often use avvies from livejournal after asking the maker if it's okay. I s'pose if the bannermaker is okay with you using it somewhere else, it should be all right, myes? (:
Second opinion, modly?

I believe Treacle_Heart is correct.

There are no rules against it, but speak to the individual bannermaker. They'll tell you whether or not they are comfortable with you using their work somewhere else, and how they'd like to be credited. I know many of our bannermakers use other sites, some specifically for graphic design, and they may want to be credited with a different username for a completely different website.

You'll need the permission of the bannermaker and you'll need permission from the moderators on that site. MNFF for example does not allow banners for stories on other sites.

If it were me, I would refrain from using it at all in this case. Who is to say that the bannermaker wouldn't see it n the other site and object to it being used?

Otherwise, credit them regardless and take care to lock your door at night . . .

Hello Amanda,

What you need to do is:
1. Send a PM to the SortingHat requesting a Sorting Quiz.
2. Then you'll need to answer the questions in the quiz that is PMd back to you.
3. PM your answers back to the SortingHat.
4. Await the reply that tells you what House you've been sorted into.

Did that make more sense?

If you need any more help, please don't hesitate to PM me or post here again with another question.

Good luck on the quiz!

1. Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
2. If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.

Sometimes it takes a short time before you are actually added to the House so please don't get impatient. RL has a way of stalling things on occasion.
