View Full Version : Duel Patronus Help

I need some help selecting Patronuses for two of my characters. The two of them are very close, so I was hoping that someone would know of two different animal species that are dependant on one another in nature. Not in the preditor/prey sense, but still in a way that one species wouldn't be able to survive with the other. I hope I'm making sense.
I look on a biology website and I think a Mutualistic Relationship (Symbiotic relationships in which each species benefits are mutualistic) is the term I'm think of. Here are a few examples, but not ones I'm sure I want to use:
The Egyptian plover takes insects from the backs of buffaloes, giraffes and rhinos. The plover has also been observed taking leeches from the open mouths of crocodiles! In this association the plover receives a supply of food and the other animal rids itself of unwelcome pests
One example is to be found between the sea anemone and the clown fish. The clown fish is able to live amongst the tentacles of the sea anemone, even though the anemone's stinging cells are fatal to other kinds of fish. It is easy to see that the clown fish benefits from protection and, perhaps, from scraps of food which the sea anemone does not take into its body. It is not so clear, however, what the sea anemone gains from the relationship.
I know there must be some really obvious answer out there that I'm just not thinking of, so I'm reaching out to all of you on the site. Here's the link to the story it's for, if that would be helpful: Clicky-click (http://fanfiction.mugglenet.com/viewstory.php?sid=76498)
ThanX a bunch!

This is a tough one......there aren't many species of animals I can think of that match your description. Well at least not any that would make suitable Patronuses. Most symbiotic relationships revolve around a big animal offering protection for a small animal in exchange for, like you were saying, picking bugs off their backs. Nothing really I can think of that you seem to be looking for.
My best advice would be to pick a suitable animal and give the animal patronus to both of your characters. That would indicate the closeness of your characters
You could use love birds (such as the masked love bird) because they are symbolic and usually live in pairs. You can also use crabs, because of the sense that crabs hold claws with their mate. You could also have the same patronus for both of your characters.
Hope that helped at least a bit.

Most mutually beneficial symbiotic relationships exist between animals which are not typically thought of as a possible Patronus.
This isn't really typical either but you might want to look at the Pelican as a possible Patronus for either of your characters. In medieval Europe it was thought that a pelican would pierce itself and feed their young its blood if no other food was available. Pelicans are still used today as a symbol of sacrifice, or unconditional love and sacrifice. This symbol does have a more parental connotation but it could work.
If you don't mind odd patronuses you should consider an Emperor Penguin. These birds are definitely more monogamous and faithful than the vast majority of humans. They also slide on their stomachs so if you chose penguins to use as a patronus you wouldn't kill the mood of your story by having to describe it waddle toward a dementor. (If that makes any sense, :D)

Thank you for all the help. I realize I did not give you guys an easy task when I put the question forward, but I appresiate all the help. (I especially liked BetweenSupposedLovers' idea of the Emperor Penguin Patronus forms).
But maybe another direction to go in would be animals that remain close with their siblings. The characters that these Patronuses are for (Nate and Lorelei) have known eachother since they were very small and often tell people who think that they should date that they think of one another as brother and sister.
I just hope I haven't put forth another impossible question, guys.
Absolutely not. There are plenty of animals out there who are very affectionate creatures and remain very close to their families. One of my personal favorites--and one that could definitely be viewed as a good Patronus form--is the wolf. Packs are nothing more than families with the occasional odd member, and despite the image of a "lone wolf" being someone who is fiercely independent, lone wolves are actually desperate, lonely creatures because they have no family.
Many kinds of prey animals are like what you describe as well. Rabbits for example. Many kinds of hooved creatures like horses, elk, goats, etc. Water mammals like dolphins or seals. {Dolphins are also highly intelligent and fun-loving creatures, and I really don't know what your characters are like, so it's at your discretion if they match up.} Even most types of apes or monkeys--gorillas and chimpanzees in particular.

Although they're thought of as quite solitary domestic cats are social animals. I used to have two cats that weren't from the same litter and were a year apart but they cuddled up together at night. They also fought quite a lot but it was generally play fighting- does that sound like your pair?
I've also been watching programmes about Meercats who are a very close knit community. The leader is a female and although they can be incredibly ruthless to other females- even their daughters (they don't let them breed) they are very close to the males in the group. If your girl is incredibly close to her brother but not to other girls in her peer group then perhaps MeerKats are the way to go.
Be careful of big cats because some, like tigers, live in a female grouping- the father will live seperate and will often kill it's offspring.

Wow, lot and lots of good suggestions. Too bad I only need two animal forms.
Also, I want to thank Equinox Chick for her post. The meercat definantly sounds like Lorelei personality wise. I should try and think of a scene were she gets transfigured into one.
*Idea monkey starts jumping*
But I think I've found the pereft Patronus forms for these two. Thanks to everyone for your help. I know I didn't put forward an easy question.
