Opinions PLEASE!

First off, I apologize in advance if this thread is totally out of place. If it is so, would someone tell me where to post it instead? I'm pretty much clueless, thank you.

I'm writing a story set in Marauders Era and I'm having a bit of a difficulty with the birthdates of characters and how to fit all of the canon-characters into my plot without having people read my fanfiction and going "She did no research before writing that," or something along the lines of that.

From what I've gathered, Bellatrix is four years older than Narcissa and two years older than Andromeda. Narcissa is a year younger than Lucius. Sirius Black is younger than Narcissa Black/Malfoy by about... five years. And him and Lucius six years. Bella - eight.

So... For most of the stories written about the Marauders, (I am not, repeat, not flaming and whatever.) it isn't really possible that the Marauders would be pranking on the infamous Slytherins (Narcissa/Bella/Lucius) UNLESS in the story, the Marauders were in their first or second year (which is usually not the case in most stories )hintromanceficshint) and had LOTS OF GUT to be pranking on seniors.

Let me just say that I am truly, and very disappointed to find out that Sirius Black was born in 1960 and not older.

Is it going to be too strange if I have my main character in seventh year at Hogwarts as well as Lucius and the Marauders as well? And Narcissa a year below? Because in Canon, Lucius was like, six years older than the Marauders and Narcissa is five years older in canon... so will it be strange because Narcissa is supposed to be older than MWPP but I'm making her younger?

AND - Should I set my story as AU because the time and stuff is A BIT altered?

Bellatrix was born in 1951, Andromeda 1953 and Narcissa 1955. Sirius was born in 1960, so by the time he starts Hogwarts, Andromeda would have left.

If you want to involve the Black sisters, I'd put Bellatrix's DOB as 1956, Andromeda's as 1958 and Narcissa's as 1960.

I'd go for AU. That stupid Black family tree ruined all my Marauder stories!

If you are going to make Narcissa younger than the Maurders, I would put an AU warning on it. There is an error in some birtdates (Bella was supposed to be friends with Snape when they were at Hogwarts) so you can play a bit with them, but making the maurders the same age as Lucius, in my opinion is overdoing it a bit. I agree to an extent with Lyra, maybe make Narcissa 1959 though.

You know what? I think I'll be using your idea. Except I'd like my main character to be in either sixth or seventh year so I think I better not include the other two Black sisters in. I'll just be using Narcissa.

That's a very good idea. I would do exactly that except for some reason, I feel the absolute need to have them the same year as Lucius. Even if I do find the idea of them being older than Narcissa very odd.

PLEASE, SOME ONE SAY ITS NOT GOING TO BE COMPLETELY CRAP IF I MAKE 'EM OLDER THAN 'CISSY.

Please calm down. Of course it won't be terrible just because you made them older than Narcissa. The difference in ages between characters isn't what makes or breaks stories--it's the writing and where you take the story. Put the AU warning on it and go with it. Just be sure it's what the story needs and not just what you want to see. That's how the best stories are written.

We can be pretty sure that the Marauders did have guts, so if you're just wanting to make it believable that the Marauders could've pranked on Lucius and them, then you don't necessarily have to make the Marauders in the same year. Put them a couple years below, maybe in fourth or fifth year, and you'd be fine. That's where my caution comes from--be sure that you actually need them to be in the same year as Lucius because you don't technically have to in order for them to be brave enough to prank him.
