The Beginning: Lily and James

Ok, I know it is popular belief that Lily Evans and James Potter got together during their seventh and final year at hogwarts, but is there anything in canon that backs this up?

"She started going out with him in seventh year," said Lupin.
And then more conversation. So, yeah, it's canon.

Just a thing to add - if you think that that time frame of about, what, 2, maybe 3 years? before they have Harry is too fast to start to get along, fall in love, get married, etc., then you could always have them become friends in sixth year, or something. After all, it doesn't say that they didn't start to get along before then - just that they didn't go out [:
