OK, here's the problem. My sister keeps trying to log into her account, but she'll log in, and it'll go to the page that says, 'thanks for logging in, HARRYHARRYHARRY' and all, and once she gets redirected, it says it's on my account. It was doing this last night when she was trying to get on, and she asked me to ask y'all. She would like to know how to fix this, so she can get onto her own account.

Thanks,
~Selina (and Alanna says thanks too)

BIG FAT EDIT: Thanks Roxy! She can get onto her account now! *is happy*

Hello Modlies!

Sorry for the bother, and sorry if this question doesn't belong here. :D

Just out of wonder, when are the Mod QSQ's going to be announced? I'm really looking foward to it, and it hasn't been talked about in a while.

Thanks!

Michelle, the tentative date for the announcement of winners for the Mod QSQ's is this Thursday, January 31, 2008.

*is back...again*

I'm not 100% sure this goes here, so sorry if it isn't.

harry_victoria posted something in my new beta thread, so I went to look at it, of course. Then, I went to respond to an email. When I came back to the thread, her post was deleted (like it wasn't there at all.) I PMed her to ask if she saw it, but she said it wasn't there either.

Did a mod or someone delete it? Or can we just not see it? We don't mind if someone did delete it...but it's haunting us. :D

Thanks!

~Michelle :)

EDIT: Thank you, Sandy!

Hey, just a quick question..

What would a Fred/OC fic be under?

xombie
02-01-2008, 06:46
I don't know if this has been asked in the earlier thread, but I can't find it there. If it has, I'm sorry, delete this, and I'll go look for it again.

I've got a few people who've favorited me as an Author in MNFF, but when I click to see who they are, I can see only one or two names. The rest are hidden. Is there any reason for this?

Thanks in advance.

Snape's Talon
02-01-2008, 07:40
Unregistered: It depends on whether the Fred/OC element was dominate or a minor subplot. So it could easily be in Other Pairings, Gen Fic, Dark/Angst, Same Sex Pairings (if the OC was male), Mystery ... you get the idea.

xombie: That's a known glitch and it happens to everyone.

songbook99

xombie, to add to what Sandy said, the people you can see should be those users who also have stories posted. The people who have favorited you that you cannot see should be those who have not had any stories posted.

I want to write a fic about a teen pregnancy at Hogwarts, the baby's going to be born in the summer(if I don't change my mind), and I wasn't planning on having the certain scene in the fic. What should the rating be if the certain scene(I hope you know what I'm talking about) isn't in there? Or would this type of fic not be allowed on MNFF?(It's about the teen pregnancy, not sex. Just wanted to make that clear.)

songbook99
02-01-2008, 19:10
missgiggles316, the rating would depend on how detailed the description of the scene is. The more detailed the description the higher the rating. If you would like a more concrete answer, you can PM me the scene you are asking about and I'll let you know.

Hi Mods-- sorry to use this space like this; I'm sure it's an easy answer. I signed up a couple of months ago but haven't really gotten involved in the forum community too much. Aside from volunteering to beta or asking for story help, what are the main activities to do on the forum?

Thanks!

Marauder by Midnight
02-02-2008, 13:12
Allymarieus - Firstly, welcome to the forums! There are plenty of things to do here besides just volunteering to beta and helping/seeking help with your story. I'd recommend you check out the New Members Guide to the Forums (http://fanfiction.mugglenet.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6505) thread in the Navy. You'll find information on what you can do in which forums and what groups you can join. Our Hogwarts school is a special favorite here, and several of our members take advantage of that. Good luck and have fun exploring what we have to offer!

I have two technical questions:

It's been a few months now: sometimes, MNFF (both the forum and the archieve) site don't open. It just randomly gives HTTP 4400 error, and comes back after approximately ten minutes. That's a completely random occasion and I'm yet to discover why it happens. I checked my internet connection, but this problem only occurs for MNFF and not for any other page or site. I wonder if anyone else has ever had the same problem or this is just another way of my devices to taunt me.

Secondly, on the archieve, when I click on a username (I tried to go to the userpage of one of my favorite authors, and then tried the same for my own username), it gives a random error - something funny like "unexpected request" Is that normal, is it temporary, or is it, again, my problem?

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: *giggles* Thanks, Beth :)

Marauder by Midnight
02-02-2008, 17:16
kehribar - Receiving the 4400 error while on forums means that there are too many people on forums. I haven't see the 4400 error on archives, so I can't say why that happens. As for receiving the username error , it's because you've caught me updating the site >.> I'm currently working on adding something to aid us in the purging process. Don't worry about it when you see that error; it just means I made a little boo-boo and am currently try to rectify it! I'm usually good about making it go away though (and getting the user page to come back!). Thanks for your vigilance!

Firstly, I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place or has already been asked, but I didn't see it yet so I thought I'd go ahead and ask the question.

Couldn't we have something of a challenge thread here? Where we can post story challenges, people can enter, and we could have polls of sorts to find a winner, or like HPFF's forums, not have a winner at all? I thought it'd be kind of fun if we have challenges, preferably somethings that are a little more interesting than ones I've found before and it could really inspire some writers. :) It's just an idea and it might play well with the rest of the group here at MN. :)

Thanks in advance!

snowybella - We do issue forum-wide challenges in the Great Hall, which you can see only if you're sorted into a House. A lot of people also find inspiration just browsing the Hospital Wing forums and getting an idea of what type of work other people are doing. There's an adoption center in the Fiction Junction where you can use plot bunnies that other people can no longer tend to.

Sainyn Swiftfoot - You must be in the School Students usergroup. To request to join, go to your User CP, Select "Group Memberships," and click "Join Group" under the appropriate usergroup. You will then have to wait until a moderator approves your membership request.

She has ben trying since this morning (it's late evening for her now) and it keeps saying the HTTP 400 error. I'm having a problem updating my author's page. I've even tried deleting the entire thing and then posting, but it too comes up with the 'HTTP 501 Not Implemented' problem. As of yet, I don't have a problem with the forums, it's just on the main site. Is anyone else having the same problem or could it just be my computer?

Thanks so much!

Ron x Hermione - The problem might be on your side. According to Microsoft support:

1. In Internet Explorer, click Internet Options on the Tools menu.
2. In the Internet Options dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
3. Click to clear the HTTP 1.1 check box, and then click OK.
4. Test to determine if the issue is resolved. If the issue is resolved, do not complete the remaining steps. If the issue is not resolved, go to the next step.
5. In Internet Explorer, click Internet Options on the Tools menu.
6. In the Internet Options dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
7. Click to clear the Show friendly HTTP error messages check box.
8. Try to view a Web page to reproduce the error message and to receive a new, more descriptive error message. This new error message may be similar to the following:
HTTP version not supported by program name.
Note the name of the program in this new error message.
9. The program name that you noted in step 8 may be the cause of this issue. Either remove this program, or contact the manufacturer of the program to inquire about the availability of a fix for this issue.

Let me know if that helps.

Once I figured those instructions out by reading through them a few times, I followed them, but it still doesn't work. I unchecked the dialog boxes, got the error message, and everything, but I don't know what's wrong with it. It might have something to do with the new spyware we just put on our computer; it's the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen. Ah, well. I'll just have to do it at a friend's house or something. Thank you very, very much for looking all that up for me, though. it was a big help.

Oh, that's too bad! And just when I had a great idea for a series too!!!

But wouldn't you know it? I ALREADY have another question!

I have heard some people on the boards talk about becoming validated authors, but I've search, and nobody says how they did it. Is it after you published a certain amount of stories? Do you have to win one of the contests? Is there some kind of test you have to take? Does the mod just declaire you validated when they think you're ready?

I'm just curious and caffinated tonight.

Phoenix5225
02-05-2008, 21:10
Validated authors are chosen by the mods. They are authors who have consistently and over time shown that they are capable of submitting quality work. The only way to become validated is be very careful with your editing and proofreading and always continuing to improve. If and when your stories consistenly show outstanding writing, then you might be selected. It is a rare honor, however, and there are only a handful of validated authors.

Hi!
In January, I submitted a story that got rejected ONLY because of wrong ratings and lack of warnings. Well, I fixed that and today I received an email by another moderator that the same story had been rejected because of mistakes like a few missing comas and a missing new paragraph. Is it a common event for moderators to classify different things as errors?

About being Un-Sorted

This is just in addition to the last two questions about people being Un-sorted after having been placed in their House. If, at any time, a member changes their email address, an email is sent to confirm that the new email address is a valid, working address. You will need to respond to that email in order to be readded to your House's usergroup.

If you have changed your email address and do not receive an email, please contact me by PM and let me know. I will then send you an email directly from my staff account to verify that your new email address works. You will have to respond to my email before you can be readded to your House usergroup.

On the main site, it says not to submit new chapters or stories to the archives. I am currently in the writing process of a chaptered fic, specifically, the prologue. I haven't found a beta yet, nor have I submitted. Do you think I will be able to submit in the time it takes to do all of those things?

Thanks to all mods who are currently working on the hacker attack!

songbook99
02-11-2008, 16:23
Claire (bertiebott12), are you asking if you'll be able to submit in the time it takes to get a beta and have them go over your Prologue or is there some other time period?

As of right now, the queue is not officially closed. It is unofficially closed in that we are asking everyone to hold off on submitting if they possibly can to help alleviate the stress on the system as we prepare for the update. We will officially close when the update is ready to occur and will remain closed until the update is complete, probably a few days.

Unfortunately, we do not have a concrete timeframe for the update and the official closure at the moment. We are still working on the preliminaries and backups to make sure the update goes as smoothly as possible.

If, however, you have to submit before the update takes place, you can. You will probably have to take the extra steps listed to get around the 'This category is Locked.' problem. Those steps are listed on the third page of this thread.

I can't post in some places- like the 'Restricted Section'. Is this because I'm not validated or I've yet to be 'sorted' (I already took the test and all but SongBook99 said it might take a while to before I'm added)? So, quick question: Kayla (Weasleyboyfreak), Kritchen, and I have been writing a fic together and we are ready to submit the first chapter. My question is, with the new co-author function, does it matter that I already have two chapters in the queue? I've had chapter 13 of Red and Gold Silk Boxer Shorts in the queue since before the upgrade, and I just recently submitted chapter two of Recipe for Disaster. I know in the rules it says that you are only allowed to submit two chapters from two different fics, so I was wondering if that meant we had to wait until one of my chapters went through. Thanks in advance!

fg_weasley - With the co-author function, you are allowed to submit even if you have two chapters in queue. However, the person submitting the chapter (the primary author) cannot have more than one chapter in queue at the time (otherwise he/she will show up as having three chapters in queue). Also note that the co-author function is a bit wonky (it won't let the anyone other than the primary author edit or respond to reviews) at the moment. You may want to hold off using the function until we can get it to work.

To the extent of your knowledge, did this error occur before the upgrade? No
What section(s) are you getting the error:Mainly the forum main page, but some other forums are having the problem too
Does the error go away when you switch skins.Yes

I have a question about the co-author function.

Suppose we start off with two authors writing the first chapter of the story, but a third person joins in for the second chapter, is it possible to add his name to the coauthors? Also, what is the maximum number of co-authors for a story?

I'm really, really sorry if this answered someplace else!

Marauder by Midnight

Sainyn Swiftfoot - Yes, you can add an author's name to the co-author function by editing your story. And yes there's a limit to how many co-authors you can have. Obviously you can't add 50 people to your story. I haven't found out what it is, but when I do, I'll let you know.

I'm back with another quesiton, this tie about a story already in the queue.

I've had a chapter of Red and Gold Silk Boxer Shorts in the queue since before the upgrade began. After the upgrade, I submitted a chapter of Recipe for Disaster, and that went through easily within a fwe days or so of submission. I've talked to a friend who's in the same boat as I am. So I was wondering if its possible that older stories from before the upgrade may have gotten lost or something, or if you simply haven't gotten to them yet? Should I deleted and re-submit, or continue to wait patiently?

Thanks for the help!

What's the minimum length a Prologue has to be? That is, I'm submitting a three-chaptered story with a prologue and epilogue and I'm hoping neither will be rejected because they're not long enough. The prologue looks like it's shaping up to be around 500 words. Is that OK, or do I need to make it longer?

I'm really sorry if this is a question that's been asked before, I honestly did have a look around first.

Thanks in advance!

Not all of my suscribed threads are showing up in my User Control Panel. This wasn't an issue until, maybe, a week ago. For example, I have posted in this Ask A Moderator Thread, but it didn't show up when Phia Pheonix posted.

This has also happened with a thread in the Beta Wanted section. :)

fg_weasley, the length of time it takes for one chapter to be moderated over another can depend on which categories you are submitting to. Marauder Era, where you submit Red and Gold Silk Boxers is a much bigger category than Other Pairing, and it may take longer for a submission to Marauder Era to be moderated than a submission to Other Pairing. The same is probably true for the story/chapter your friend has submitted.

Phia Phoenix, Prologues and Epilogues must be at least five hundred words. Anything under five hundred will be automatically rejected.

bertiebott12, PM me with the details of the threads you are missing and I'll take a look at your forum account to see if I can find and fix the problem.

Hi all,

I've searched the forums to no avail, so here goes: is there a rule about Interludes? i.e. can a chapter be of prologue/epilogue length but in the middle of the story? I've had a 600-word interlude approved before, but it was many moons ago and I just wanted to make sure there hadn't been any formal consensus against them since then (December 2006, in case it matters).

If it is acceptable, should the author just make sure it is clearly marked as an interlude, following prologue/epilogue procedure?

Infinite thanks,

LuthAn: I would address that with the category mod where you'll be submitting your story. I would be inclined to say no and ask that the interlude at least meet the minimum chapter word count.

bertiebott12: It is possible to resubmit stories if you have deleted them and done substantial editing. It is better, however, to coordinate such resubmissions with the mod who is in charge of the category where you are submitting them. I know I've done that for a couple of folks.

I do hope I'm posting in the right place.

I have my first chapter in the queue for submission, and I realize it's not appropriate to contact a moderator until it's been in queue for 14 days, which is not a problem. I've looked around and cannot seem to find the date of submission, therefore not entirely sure when to contact them.

Can someone point me in the right direction, please?

My author name is Harry_Potter_Mom and the story is "The Road Home".

Harry_Potter_Mom - Sometime in the near future, I will add on a table on Manage Stories that'll show you the date you submitted. But at the moment, I'm a bit overwhelmed. I don't know your date of submission unfortunately, but you may approximate it by looking at the date you updated your story.

Hello mods!

I have a couple of questions about the new submission guidlines. Assuming a story has a few of the errors mentioned. When we pay, would some information about ourselves be given, such as a credit card number? I am not old enough to own a credit card, and don't feel comfortable giving out a bank account or my address if we mail you the money.

Second, if a person doesn't have enough money to spare for their stories, do they just not get validated? Is the validated author system going to still be in effect? How will the mods know if a validated author has mistakes?

Thanks for all that you do!

/Claire

EDIT: Nevermind. The question has been answered. Please delete this post.

Marauder by Midnight

bertiebott12 - A system is currently being set up (I'm currently working with some main staffers in implementing the payment program on our site). You will receive more details in your rejection/validation letter should the information pertain to you. Personal details about payment options will be discussed with an administrator privately.

If you do not have the money to pay for your mistakes, your story will sit in a queue waiting room until the payment has been fully made.

Validated authors are given leeway - we will not check up on their mistakes since they are our trusted authors.

However, if it's not a joke, I'm rather speechless. >.>
As a former mod, I'm making sums and figures and that's a lot of bank.

Also, when did the archive get ads?
And when do you expect to fix the Edit Bio/Personal Information glitch?

Edit: Say you submit a story and get a bill back but you had it betaed by a PI Beta - do we charge the beta? Seriously. I don't think it's fair to pay you when the beta didn't do his/her job.

I have a weird question- Earlier whenever somebody posted in threads I had subscribed to with instant email notification, I would get an instant email notification. songbook99
04-01-2008, 15:30
mugglemathdork, we really don't have a time estimate on the edit bio glitch as it is occurring because of our limited server space. Until the third party allots us more server space, the only way to edit your bio is to remove all banners/images and then edit.

Snape's Talon, the Beta Guild does not have any plans to charge for their services.

witch6, the problem with the delay in getting those emails probably has to do with the amount of activity on the site.

My dearest modlies,

For some reason, the Founder skins seem to have disappeared off the main site. I'm rather attached to the Founder of Ravenclaw skin, and I would hate to see them go.

I searched and nothing came up on rewrites, so here it goes:

I've got four chapters up of a working story in first person past tense, and I'm changing it to third person present, moving around parts of the story, condensing those four chapters into two, and renaming it. Should I fix everything up through edits, or are the changes substantial enough that I should delete the story and resubmit the rewritten version of what I've already got to the queue?

Thanks!

songbook99
04-02-2008, 17:03
bertiebott12, I don't see a function to make yourself invisible on the archive. Perhaps Beth knows more.

jenny b, the change is only temporary. It's all about celebrating Fred and George.

Pendraegona, while changing verb tense may not be considered a major change, both the point of view change from first to third person and the condensing of four chapters into two are definitely considered substantial changes. Removing the story and resubmitting the revised version is the way to go.

After the classes are over, do you keep the lesson, lectures, etc threads, or do you delete them?

If you normally delete them, I beseech you to reconsider this decision, since many of them are useful for checking up on things (Mainly, the banner-making class). Also, if you want to learn things from past classes, you can turn to these threads and read the basics.

lostinside1 - Recommendations should be about how well the recommender feels an applicant qualifies for the modding job. Most recommendations that are sent in would talk about the writing quality and the professionalism an applicant demonstrates and/or about the maturity and intellect an applicant has. These should be from personal experiences/dealings with the applicant and the details of such experiences, be it good or bad, should be noted. The more detailed and more specific a recommendation is, the better (maybe not for the applicant but certainly for us). The recommendation is to help us get a fuller picture of who is applying.

witch6 - The skin is called "champion." The skin should show up for anyone, even guests.

Dear Mods,

I don't mean to be a pain in the bum -- but when do you expect to fix the invisible status on the archive? I, personally, do not feel comfortable with other users knowing I'm online. I know that it was modified so it only shows on the main page and not subsequent ones but it's bothersome, nonetheless. I'm not saying that I have a stalker or anything but you never know. Also, isn't this a violation of privacy in some sense? [Not that I'm accusing you all of anything] I just rather not have to log off every time I want to read a story due to this feature.

Also, in re: to the bio edit. It was suggested I take off any banners in order to edit it. I do not have any banners on mine -- just a couple of sentences about my stories. I still can't change my bio, and I'm not in a hurry but just letting you know that nothing really works in regards to this feature.

And I was experiencing some issues while reading a Professors rated story - and it kept telling me I needed to log in to read the story - which I was. I even checked that my user age agreement was checked off but the problem continued every chapter or two. Should I post this in the assigned forum for such glitches?

Sorry to bother you. >.<
Thanks for your hard work -- it is much appreciated,

mugglemathdork - There won't be an invisibility feature. As I had said a few posts back, if it bothers a lot of people, I'll take the online block down. I really can't do anything about the bio edit. Even mods can't change it for you. As I have said, that can only be fixed by a third party. And yes. Any glitches should be reported to the glitch forum, though your particular glitch we already know about (http://fanfiction.mugglenet.com/forum/showthread.php?t=19043). I am not able to post a new thread, so I have to post in a reply (sorry if it's incorrect!).

I am not getting any letters of validation for my story Luna's Poems. I have had four poems validated in the past month, yet have not received an email telling me that. I tried re-entering my email address into my account, and re-clicking all the preference buttons, but still, nothing seems to work. I'm sorry if this has already been answered, I searched the thread and didn't get any results, so I figured I'd ask...

I'm currently trying to submit a poem, however, each time I click the 'preview' or 'add story' button, it says that I have not met the required length - even though poetry is supposed to be exempt from the length rules.

Thanks,

~Vivian

fawkeshermione221: Poetry is exempt only from the chapter length requirements. It must still be at least 100 words. You can either revise the poem to expand it or add an author's note to bring it up to the minimum length. It's a system requirement, so there's no getting around it.

Hi!
So I was trying to post a story on MNFF, but when I copied my story into the little box, it wouldn't let me use italics!
And then I tried to just attach the word document, but it wouldn't let me do that either!
Do you have any ideas as to what I could do to make this work?
Thanks a bunch!

ritaskeetertobe - You need to use HTML tags for italics to work. See this page (http://fanfiction.mugglenet.com/viewpage.php?page=tips_formatting) for help.

As for uploading a Word document: I believe that once you do upload a Word document and try to submit your story, you get an error that says, "Only text or HTML files only." A Word document is not a text or HTML file, which would have the extension .txt or .html.

Hello-- OK, I searched the FAQ's, did a "search this thread" search using the key words, and haven't had any luck in getting this one answered, so here goes: I posted a one-shot a little less than a week ago, and I realized after the fact that I probably put it in the wrong category. The pairing is Severus Snape and Lily Evans, so although I believe I submitted it as Marauder era, it probably should have been in the AU category instead of just having an AU warning, since a world in which Harry would never exist is pretty darned alternative. :) Anyway, it hasn't been validated yet-- is it too late for me to change the category? Would I just go into "edit" in order to change it?

Next question, since I'm very new to this (I've only posted one thing so far) and right now this particular pair are kind of my muse-- does everything regarding an AU pairing like this have to go into the AU category?

Thanks very much!

SeverusSempra - If Harry doesn't exist, then yes, your story will have to be moved to Alternate Universe. Regardless of whether your story was validated yet or not, you will have to move it. Otherwise, you'll just be rejected for putting the chapter in the wrong category.

Not all Severus/Lily stories go into AU. I believe most of them are in Other Pairing.

Okay, lets say that you're sending in a new story. When you go to put in the warnings how do you put in more than one?

lupins_girl2006 - Answering this one last time. You hold the CTRL key.

This question has now been added to the Forum and site FAQ.

I haven't been getting emails when my stories have been validated or when I get a new review. Can someone help me please? I have everything on 'send me a email' mode and I have no idea what is going on. Is it just a glitch?

Thanks!

silverseverus - Whenever you have a problem with your account or a story, you must include your uid and the pertaining sid. Otherwise I can't help you.

MJ_Padfoot - Did you check your spam mail? Most likely your email provider has begun to filter emails from Mugglenet Fan Fiction as spam.
