Has JKR ever told us what James parent's names were (harry's paternal grandparents)? If so, what are they?

In so many words: No.

Actually, there may be a chance that Charlus and Dorea is James' parents, because Charlus' last name is Potter and they had one son. Here's a link to the Potter Lexicon Black Family Tree http://www.hp-lexicon.org/images/blackfamilytrees/official-final-version.gif

Really interesting if you look at the Black family tree!

Hope I helped!

Hmm, no, Lindsay, Charlus and Dorea are too far back in the tree to be James's parents. And somewhere, sometime, I remember JKR told us Charlus and Dorea are not James's mum and dad.

(I adore the Black Family Tree, too) :D

Actually, their ages could have worked. James was born in March of 1960, according to DH, and Dorea Black would have been around 40 at this time. Jo said that James's parents had him late in life, so it is possible.

Although, she also said that they were quite old upon their deaths, and according to the Tree, Dorea Black died at only 57 years old -- that's a shorter lifespan in terms of Muggle years, and Wizarding lifespans are supposed to be much longer. (Of course, that's the case for the entire Black Family Tree, so it's just possible that the Black family was cursed with shorter-than-average lifespans.)

That said, though, it's my personal belief that Charlus Potter and Dorea Black are NOT James's parents, though they are, more than likely, a relative of some sort. Charlus Potter could be an uncle or something.

JKR: No. This takes us into more mundane territory. As a writer, it was more interesting, plot-wise, if Harry was completely alone. So I rather ruthlessly disposed of his entire family apart from Aunt Petunia. I mean, James and Lily are massively important to the plot, of course, but the grandparents? No. And, because I do like my backstory: Petunia and Lily's parents, normal Muggle death. James's parents were elderly, were getting on a little when he was born, which explains the only child, very pampered, had-him-late-in-life-so-he's-an-extra-treasure, as often happens, I think. They were old in wizarding terms, and they died. They succumbed to a wizarding illness. That's as far as it goes. There's nothing serious or sinister about those deaths. I just needed them out of the way so I killed them.

Taken from an interview with Jo, and the Potter family on the Lexicon.

The Lexicon also says: Both his mother and father were wizards. Either his mother or father were fairly directdescendents of XXX Peverell the original owner of the Invisibilty Cloak Deathly Hallow; other than that, JKR has said James' parents are not terribly important to the story.

I have to say, with no other clues to be found, they can have any names you want to give them. Hope that helps.
